While those were game systems, they weren't really "portable consoles" they only had one game, as opposed to a cartridge system which is what really makes a console
It’s insane to consider the gameboy came out in 1989 and wasn’t discontinued until 2003! So basically this thing was around when the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and even the Nintendo game cube came out two years before that thing was finally put to pasture
oh YES, I remember getting sent off to bed by my parents whilst staying at my grandparents. I soo wanted to watch a show they had airing here in the UK, then I remembered I had that antenna and watched it in bed under my blanket :p ahhhh the Good old days.
The Game Gear had a very impressive early library, and had backwards compatability with almost every Master System game. Nintendo had an uphill battle for a while there.
I love both my Game Boy and Game Gear! Both have pros and cons but the games for each make up the likes for both consoles. I have a Majesco one it doesn't suffer from the bad capacitor issues, still works perfectly
the battery life on the game gear is that bad I remember buying the most powerful batteries there were and only lasted 3 hours and I tested them and they tested out as still at 60 percent life left. Meaning the game gear did not efficiently use batteries.
pavy415 So there were various different board designs of the GG the early models really did have a about a 4 hour battery life but my later models will do about 6. still not great but with modern rechargeables I get close to 10 hours on a recapped game gear.
I actually liked the Atari Lynx more than the game gear! It's arcade ports were more better in Lynx. Please do a video on the Lynx compared to the Turbo Graphix 16 (Turbo Express) handheld or the Sega Nomad!!! Do all three in comparison.
I had a 1989 Nintendo Game Boy for about a year by now and it only had a leakage once, thanks to duracell batteries current issue, but it survived and sill works. Now I use Energizer for my Nintendo Game Boy, and so far no leakages had happen since then.

And the biggest problem was marketing, The wii u had one of the worst marketings i've ever seen, so i would say that exclusives are really important but they have to be backed by marketing and they gotta be constant
My cousins used to have a gamegear and would rag on my game boy all the time simply for the color and backlit games. Funny how gameboy came out victorious in the end though.
OTBWY lol yeah, Pokémon absolutely destroyed anything portable around that time. I remember at school people were paying guys up to $5 to get them hacked masterballs off their game shark! $5 was a lot for a kid back then lol
Well the way pussies are now a days they probably will. If the fucking feminist cunts cried about the boy scouts and demanded girls be let in, I'm sure eventually game boy will have to change it's name. Only a matter of time.
"I still find it pathetic they didn't make the Gameboy Color backlit at least." Agree! And what about the fact that most GBA units still weren't even backlit?! We are in 2001 at this point! So lame but Nintendo were often cheap, just money money and barely care about standards...
Yohko M. The gba used RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES. That was a fairly new technology (good ones at least) and it could support a backlit screen without the batteries dying in an hour
Woah, bub. Have you TOUCHED an Atari Lynx?? That thing was miles ahead of the Game Gear and Gameboy from a technical level. It's got quite a few good games as well!
The PC Engine GT (aka TurboExpress) is the worst of the bunch IMO because it doesn't have any dedicated games! This alone make the Game Boy and Game Gear infinitely more interesting. Also it wasn't that a good idea because some PC Engine games don't work well on the tiny PC Engine GT screen plus, as you said, it has even worse autonomy than the Game Gear... btw the Lynx seems like an awesome device!
i think you kinda skipped over the part where the game gear, was also prone to breaking easily. those screens may have been colour. but i have never ran into a working gamegear over my years since i had one. i got a gameboy the other day, a first gen one, and it worked perfectly.
Actually, for the last point its actually an indication that such memories will get cheaper. I mean technology advances, but the general public does not want to deal with keeping a mini-sd save eventhough they store huge amounts of data. Even I prefer something bigger, instead of that mini plastic that I can easily loose.
The game gear is a pretty neat console drawbacks aside, it's a shame that it's very hard to find one in working condition with it's original parts, but an lcd upgrade is very much worth it, heck it even makes the battery life a whole lot better
Game Gear was MY JAM. I loved NES/SNES but as a kid who had to drive 7 hours in a car with family, i'd plug it in the car charger and play Sonic and Aladdin for hours. I also had the TV adaptor. Which sucks when traveling but was flawless for the 90s.
One day I decided to leave the Switch home and take the Game Boy to work instead. A younger girl that I know, (about 20) just happened to stop by as I'm on break and was playing my Game Boy (the same one I got on my birthday the year it came out; I was 9.) And the first thiing she said is "Oh is that a Nintendo?!" I correct her and just think to myself "wow!" And then that's when I realized the age difference. I wanted to ask "Why do you like hanging out with me?" but I let it slide and just handed her the system. It was her first time holding a Game Boy. She had a blast playing it. The Game Boy still bringing joy after all these years.
The original Nintendo Game Boy or the Sega Game Gear? Which handheld in this video is the best? My honest answer: neither of them. They both suck. And why? Because the Game Boy and the Game Gear have terrible battery life, the Game Boy has no backlit screen, the Game Gear has a frontlit screen (The Sega Nomad has a frontlit screen and bad battery life as well) and the Game Gear's games have gameplay slow-downs. The Sega Nomad is superior to the Sega Game Gear because the Nomad is a 16-bit handheld powerhouse that plays all of your 16-bit Sega Genesis games except for Virtua Racing with no gameplay slow-downs and the Game Gear is inferior because it plays slowed-down 8-bit Game Gear games.
Gameboy's battery life is pretty doable tho. I fail to see how an average of 9 hours per 4 batteries is awful. And by that logic, the Sega Nomad is the worst of the 3. It's battery life is laughable.
Sega always shows the way, always come up with innovation, but sadly it does not have good marketing stratergy to keep its products going. The only console that i really enjoy was Sega megadrive/genesis.
Never had a Gameboy, just a Gameboy Pocket and Game boy color. I played the Game gear as a kid thanks to my cousin, but it was too big for my hands. Since I was like 4 years old. I hated that it was glued to the wall, my cousin was lazy about batteries. And I hated it. I’m rather glad I got the Gameboy Pocket with Pokémon Blue. Loved it.
I have made a hobby out of repairing failing GGs and I really have a lot of love for what Sega tried to do back then. There are a lot of great games for it earth worm Jim on it was way better than the gameboy version and the shinobi series as another. Amazes me it took Nintendo so many years to get a color back lit screen.
You'd think, wouldn't you, that opting for a monochrome screen with no backlight was madness on the part of Nintendo, especially when their competitors were offering these options by the late 80s and early 90s. However, it turned that these competitors' offerings were impractical to own if you wanted a truly portable system, nor did they have the library of software. By '89, Nintendo already had Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, MegaMan and Contra as licensable franchises, plus more I'm probably forgetting.
Don’t diss the lynx, it’s actually the first and only 16 bit handheld. It was even capable of mode 7! It sold decent enough in Australia (where I’m commenting from) to be recognisable to the average person. But still a cool video mate.
If you think about it, the GameBoy was like the iPhone, back at it's time, there were plenty of devices with better features for the portable gaming (backlight displays, better sound and more), but none of them were perfect and had a lot of flaws (terrible energy consumption, durability issues, etc), and the GameBoy just remained almost the same, changing it's size, adding "color", but nothing too dramatic, until Nintendo could bring the backlight displays with a decent power consumption.
I remember a kid that made a calculator skinning just to make his Gameboy look like a calculator, he got caught a couple weeks later because he forgot to lower the volume.
By the way game boy sold over 118 million units sold so the game boy was the second best selling handheld and most of the people think that game gear was pretty dumb
Having played the game gear as a kid I can tell you > battery life was an issue... It'll be dead before you start enjoying it. I still love the Game Gear regardless.
"Thousands of helpless teenagers, trapped in a dull drab world of colorless video games" Lol Damn man. Sega was always verbally attacking Nintendo back then with their commercials. Ironically, Nintendo ended up winning In the end lol
hence CAN be as low.
