The desire to cultivate a more intentional and remarkable existence - what we call “the deep life” - is universal. In today’s episode, Cal talks about one of the most common traps in this pursuit: hoping that the achievement of a singular grand goal will make all parts of your life better. Cal discusses the problems with the grand goal approach and argues why the more systematic lifestyle-centric mindset will not only produce better results, but end up leading to remarkable opportunities anyway. He then takes questions and calls from readers and reviews the five books he read in May.

It is never too late . . . my friend, the moment you start correcting your mistakes, even tho you are older, it is still very fulfilling and brings great joy in life
Thanks! Needed to hear this
What a wonderful thing to share. Thank you!
Yes! As long as you're alive it's not too late. I'm changing a lot in my life and it's a great feeling🤗
I did deep life in my teens, and now at 48, I’ve been happily floundering in the shallows for 30 years 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I discovered this podcast today and I'm loving it. I love how you give very practical and realistic tips, you don't try to sell grand promises just to attract a larger audience of unreasonable people.
40:45 underrated reminder for all parents/would be parents.
Being a parent is a lifelong commitment. Generations of folks get into it woefully underprepared internally. The suffering that ensues really spills over all and we leave, have left the children, future generations, others in society the burden of dealing with the mess
Kids don't need to be expensive. They value the time you spend with them more than things you buy them especially when they're young. When they're older they can get a part time job and buy their own stuff.
As a grandfather I can confirm 2 things. Embracing parenthood is going to bring personal growth. And large cardboard boxes are the more fun for kids than any toy.
I've now read two of your books - Deep Work and Digital Minimalism. Great job!
There is a lot wisdom in those books; lot's of it matches up with my own experience. It is refreshing to here someone value the idea of becoming intrinically competant in the everyday aspects of their lives before launching off into some grand plan.
Looking forward to more from you.
Thank you as always Cal.
I love that you are so down to earth, not snobby, your genuine compassionate nature really shows. ❤
I needed this, Cal. Thanks 🙏🏼
Talking about a book that I resonated with the author's life and not just their techniques: The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer. As i'm studying humility, flow, and waiting on God, here is an apparent non-Christian who was rewarded throughout his life in this approach. I solidifies God's promises to all people.
Thank you so much
You made this video for me, specifically, didn’t you? 😬😬 Or maybe it’s a social commentary on the “gifted and talented” curse of 90s kids? We were told that we were destined for “big things.” Anything short of that is failure.
After living 15 years in the grand goal strategy (and failing) I’ve recently come to many of your conclusions organically. Thanks for sharing your insights and validating my suspicions.
I have Gigantic Goals and Already Living a Deep Life, guess there are a few Exceptions to this Rule .
Question, if you are aged 35 and working at a dead end job but really need to make ends meet because you need to support your family, how can I change my life?
I studied Digital marketing and I am still busy paying off the student loan I took out, honestly I like the fact that you don't sugarcoat things and you break it down piece by piece and remind us of the reality vs dream or ideas..
I would appreciate feedback
He doesn't answer comments. You better email him.
@@fatemehhosseini305 Thanks for the tips but I was hoping that some of the fans or people in the comment section could give me ideas
@boogerman9047 (if that is your real name... 😉). Firstly props to you for doing what you need to, to support your family. That's important. Go you!
In answer to your question, I would suggest reading Cal's other book So Good That They Can't Ignore You. It's notionally about Why We Shouldn't Follow Our Passion but really is about finding what you (and only you) have to offer and making that something compelling to others. It really helped me think about who I am and what I have to give to the world.
Good luck. You can do this.
@@seventyeight4237 Thanks for the tip, I randomly stumbled on Cals work online after learning about Deep work, to purchase the hardcopy is something I am very interested in doing so that I can not only help myself but also show my support, this is one of the best channels on RUclips.
Part of problem is Bosses, will be very un productive but want to appear productive to their bosses. So, they will force people to their useless meetings with no prep, no clue what to say, just wasting time. Even Dilbert pointed out this. So he can look productive by making people come to useless meetings. Then demand you make up for all this stupid time.
How do I reverse engineer my goals? What if I don't have any goals?

Creo que el problema con muchos de nosotros es que estanos dentro del culto a la juventud
Oigo que gente dice que si pueden cambiar su vida porque ya tienen la edad avanzada de 20's!!
Creen que ya estan acabados
I made this mistake and I am huge failure in life😢😢😢😢
Hang in there Pal. It's never too late ❤️
What you consider a failure is most likely unfinished projects and undiscovered opportunity. Some would envy you.
I think Cal gives great advice but it can be jarring to listen to sometimes as it feels like the advice is aimed at privileged 20-something-year-olds with health insurance, college degrees and wealthy families. What about older people with less privilege trying to turn their lives around after working hard for decades and having little to show for it (including little self esteem or hope for the future). The advice is just as relevant, but the delivery would be different. It's just too painful to listen to this sometimes.
El es un profesor universitario, como debería hablar?
Hay que bajar la sensibilidad y el clasismo
Si, porque los pobres también son clasistas
@@aularje It's feedback. I'm not saying he "should" speak like anything. He may not be aware that this is sometimes how his message can come across, and he may be interested in speaking to a wider audience. Or not. His choice.
As a sixtysomething lifelong learner still active in the workforce, I get lots of value from Cal's books and podcast, but I agree that some of the info/advice needs to be "translated" to apply to my situation as an older person. I would welcome a book or some podcast episodes focused on Generation Silver. Maybe Cal could interview some oldsters about how we put the Deep Work principles into practice in later life.
@@jenniferlamontleo6114 Thanks Jennifer. I would welcome that too. And agree - I get a lot of value from Cal's work too :)
i think the guy who asked if it's too late at 27 is a troll. There's no way anyone in the entire world believes 27 is too old for anything.
I go to enough TUFT things? Lame
Moving to a big city? Retiring early? Those aren’t grand goals. How can you call a goal “grand” if it’s doable in a matter of years? No, a grand goal is ending energy insecurity, ending food insecurity, making traffic jams a thing of the past. Goals one could devote an entire lifetime to pursuing.
Obviously, if your goal is a dream job, life becomes hollow when you get it because what are you supposed to do next? In real life there’s no such thing as riding off into the sunset like they do in the movies once the main character accomplishes his/her goal. Get real, Cal.
My friend, i think you're overthinking it. Retiring early or planning to move to big city when your salary can't yet keep up with the cost of living there are indeed grand, relative to goals like wanting to have the same sleep schedule every day or learning to play a few songs on a guitar. Not everyone will want to solve world hunger or climate change as their grand goal.
Please for the love of God, get new music for slow productivity. It’s awful! Have a contest or something.
Cal, can you please be a bit briefer?
You're always accused of being long winded, and I'm afraid there's a bit of truth to that 😔
What? Just go read a summary and don’t be so incredibly rude.
Your paraphrase of my phone conversation wasn't completely accurate. If the goal is to keep me off of social media, then I shouldn't have to hear my words reflected back at me. This is why I don't trust the intentions of RUclipsrs. I am glad that your discipline has helped you to do interesting things, but that doesn't mean that it was a good move on your part to monitor and judge someone else. You have interesting content, but I will never put you on a pedestal.
You take too long to get to the point!
We have to sit through a 90 minute video???
People watching this either trust your advice or not.
Spell it out quickly.
If this approach is not for you, go elsewhere. Many of us want this deep, detailed content. The irony of wanting everything in tiny bites, when this man is an expert and leading scholar on short attention spans and how to improve them in the digital age. There are lots of summaries out there. And summary vids here on RUclips. Consider not being so self-centred and rude. Not everything is about you!
I hope your short attention span gets healed. If you listen on 1.25 speed this video shortens to 67 minutes, and at 1.5 speed it shortens to 56 minutes.
