    What a pleasure it is to listen to all the short stories of Somerset Maugham.

    It's wonderful and awful that Maugham could tell the tale of the exasperating Herrington so vividly, making it so excruciatingly real. I was as desperate as Ashenden by the time that terrible trip was over, never knowing whether to laugh or scream.

    What a shame that the final story wasn't included namely, 'Mr. Harrington's Washing.' It's so beautifully written and poignant.

      He's an exact copy of my father! 1918-1985, who lived his adolescence and young adulthood in Philly. Very much the same personality, perhaps a bit more entertaining...incredibly well-read, augmented by my mother reading to him "the highbrow stuff." Many were hypnotized by his talking--even his half grown children, but not beyond a certain age...he became a well known writer, which rescued him from becoming a murder victim.

    Does he wind up killing him in the next story?
    I actually work with someone like Herrington.
    I think there is an unusually large number of people who are so mind numbingly oblivious and believe themselves to be far more clever and interesting than they actually are.

    " Obviously a jew "..!? I can never tell if someone is Jewish just by looking at them.. How can you tell.? ( Note : I don't care if they ARE Jewish but is there
    something I'm missing..? ) Maugham makes similar remarks in a couple of
    other stories. Seems very odd . Or is it just me...?

    • @stellaburnell7947
      @stellaburnell7947 5 месяцев назад +4

      Maugham had no inhibitions about describing people like that. People's race, body shape , facial structure ... Maugham described them in his own inimitable way. I don't know if this was just his way of writing, or whether it was common in his era to be so blunt . If that type of writing isn't to your taste, Maugham may not be for you.

      This is rather an impertinent answer to a perfectly normal question.
      It was normal in Maugham's period,and why it was normal has been perfectly described in Umberto Ecco's 'Prague Cemetery'.
      I suggest you to try and read it,in case it'd not be too demanding for you.
