It's wonderful and awful that Maugham could tell the tale of the exasperating Herrington so vividly, making it so excruciatingly real. I was as desperate as Ashenden by the time that terrible trip was over, never knowing whether to laugh or scream.
I know. I traveled to .asia. Of course the stories are of an bygone era. And I discovered that they hate him in Malaysia. They refuse to put his picture amongst the celebrities that stayed. @the eastern oriental hotel in penang. Same in Singapore.
He's an exact copy of my father! 1918-1985, who lived his adolescence and young adulthood in Philly. Very much the same personality, perhaps a bit more entertaining...incredibly well-read, augmented by my mother reading to him "the highbrow stuff." Many were hypnotized by his talking--even his half grown children, but not beyond a certain age...he became a well known writer, which rescued him from becoming a murder victim.
I'm about halfway through and the better be appointed story I will never listen/read Somerset more again! I want to have the unfortunate experience someone like Mr Harrington want to encounter Jake ever again!!!
Israel's Arrow system is the first to shoot down ballistic missles at the edge of space. but the US doesn't have coastal batteries only around key site and your house aint one of them
Wow that ending kinda sucks! So he’s just stuck with the guy during his stay in Petrograd?? Does he wind up killing him in the next story? I actually work with someone like Herrington. I think there is an unusually large number of people who are so mind numbingly oblivious and believe themselves to be far more clever and interesting than they actually are. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏽
" Obviously a jew "..!? I can never tell if someone is Jewish just by looking at them.. How can you tell.? ( Note : I don't care if they ARE Jewish but is there something I'm missing..? ) Maugham makes similar remarks in a couple of other stories. Seems very odd . Or is it just me...?
Maugham had no inhibitions about describing people like that. People's race, body shape , facial structure ... Maugham described them in his own inimitable way. I don't know if this was just his way of writing, or whether it was common in his era to be so blunt . If that type of writing isn't to your taste, Maugham may not be for you.
@@stellaburnell7947 This is rather an impertinent answer to a perfectly normal question. It was normal in Maugham's period, and why it was normal has been perfectly described in Umberto Ecco's 'Prague Cemetery'. I suggest you to try and read it,in case it'd not be too demanding for you.
I enjoyed this story so much. Laughed out loud. I had forgotten how brilliant his shoet stories are. Thank you so much
What a pleasure it is to listen to all the short stories of Somerset Maugham.
It's wonderful and awful that Maugham could tell the tale of the exasperating Herrington so vividly, making it so excruciatingly real. I was as desperate as Ashenden by the time that terrible trip was over, never knowing whether to laugh or scream.
That WAS painful! Masterfully done!
These stories make me long for bygone days and faraway places.
I know what you mean but remember, the past invariably has a false halo.
@@elizabethcrowley3321 Yes, I agree.

@@ambc8970 Hiw interesting! Why do they hate him?
Oh, that was painful. Thank you? Yes, thank you for the story, and for the reminder that it is NEVER wise to suffer the insufferable.
I cannot thank you ENOUGH❤
What a shame that the final story wasn't included namely, 'Mr. Harrington's Washing.' It's so beautifully written and poignant.
Reminiscent of another story, "Winter Cruise". I Loved them both ! Thanks for this one .
Oh yes, I remember… the female chatterbox ended up endearing herself to the German crew…
I know Mr. Harrington.
Lol. So do I.

I must admit one of the BEST
One of my favorites. Thank you
I wanted to shut mr Harrington up
Sounds like he is autistic.
Does anyone know what the music was at the end?
Quite nice.
As for the story, hmmm
Thank you 🙏
There is more to this story. A curious reader should read the additional story called Mr Harrington's Laundry.
Thanks.
Yes, thanK you! I will.
This is the third story I have read with Ashenton. I must learn the order. This is confusing.
Wow. A master storyteller.
A.I, surely..?
I'm about halfway through and the better be appointed story I will never listen/read Somerset more again!
I want to have the unfortunate experience someone like Mr Harrington want to encounter Jake ever again!!!
That’s funny, I just vacationed with a girlfriend like that, nonstop chatter 😅
I love these
Listening to everyone
Harrington's laundry ???
Or, Harrington’s Washing.
Yes, There is an additional story that ends in a tragic manner.
Well written and engaging but meaningless
Harrington is a yank. This description is excellent. This is how they are‼️🤣
Are we like that?
Israel's Arrow system is the first to shoot down ballistic missles at the edge of space. but the US doesn't have coastal batteries only around key site and your house aint one of them
I usually walk away if someone can't shut up but this poor guy was trapped.
Wow that ending kinda sucks!
So he’s just stuck with the guy during his stay in Petrograd??

Maybe it is autism.
Hahaha hahaha hahaha 😂
Strange Bedfellows not literally but so to speak

He has a story called " The Hairless Mexican"

Some people look like the sterotype of their people. Many in fact.
It’s very easy actually
Eastern euro Jews have a very distinct look
eff neural surfer!
Harrington was manic
This Maugham was obviously antisemitic big time, mind you like half Europe.
Half a dozen words does not an antisemitic make. I'd say he's anti American 😂
@@judikingsman6132 hello? ALL Brits are anti-USA, whether they admit it or not.
Why the stupid music going on and on after?!
Perhaps a musical interval deliberately inserted by neuralsurfer, as appropriate to the tale😂
