  • The main engine on the Liberty Ship Jeremiah O'Brien running at full ahead. 2,500 HP of triple expansion steam engine goodness. My father Steve in the hat.

Yes, this is the engine used for the engine room scenes in the James Cameron movie "Titantic"

This is the closest you can get in seeing what Titanic's engines may have looked like but three times bigger.

Which is why James Cameron specifically used this very ship for the engine room scenes in the movie.

Thank you! I'm happy to share it. We'll be running the ship at pier 35 in SF this coming Friday-Sunday (July 14-16th, 2023), if you find your way out here away from the murderous roadrunners.

      Yup, it sure was.
Some years back, the O’Brien was docked at Portland, and I was in the Engine room - by far, the best part of the ship if you’re a lifelong engine-nerd.
It wasn’t running then, bummer. I wish I could have seen it running!

Triple expansion steam piston engine ❤, they also make triple expansion steam turbines too, general electric and the old ocean liner SS Oriana had them 😎

    Bonjour Wesley,
Your father actually worked on this mythical Liberty ship ? What an amazing experience !
Besides this, not obvious to find an unusual noise... in this noise. Did he finally succeed ?
Funny to imagine that full ahead is about 125 RPM, these boats were very slow. But they made what they were built for and made fortunes of several shipowners after the war.
I would like to build a model replica of this boat, very uncommon if steam equipped.
    Amicalement, Raphaël

      Bonjour Raphaël,
My father and I have been onboard a few times. Helping out here and there.
I think the source of the noise has been found and mitigated.
It really is incredible the size of these engines and what they did. How many of these ships they made in such a short time... And how long this one has lasted.
This is the only ship to ever steam out of the "mothball" reserve fleet under her own power. A feat unto itself.
I'm sure you could make an incredible model of one. I am looking forward to seeing it! 🤓
