Hey Gary, I use my cottage intermittently in the winter. I regenerated my Clack softener 2 weeks ago before I left and did not run any water before leaving. I am heading back the the cottage tomorrow. Do I need to repeat regeneration after 2 weeks with zero gallons being softened? If so, why? Does it hurt the softener if I was away for a month without using any water? Thanks Gary for your excellent info on your site! Sean
We've been living in our log home on a well for almost two years now. Water tested great when we moved in and although kids didn't like the taste it wasn't the worst water I've had out of a tap. We've been through a rough few months as a family and didn't notice the power was off to our clack water softener for perhaps 8 months or more? Until recently we had about 8 ppl in the home using water now its just 4 of us. For the last 6 months we've had red/brown toilet bowls, tiles and sinks and for the last month or two white calcium build up is everywhere, dishwasher, facets and bidets are not working or not working as well as they were. Laundry stinks and white residue on machine or hand washed dishes. I just found your channel and have learned a ton about water systems now, was completely ignorant when I woke up this morning. I've turned the power back on to the softeners. The black rectangular brine tank has an inch or two of salt but only an inch of water covering that and it doesn't seem to reach the white brine tube or filter thing. I've set the softener to regen and its completing that now. Will it fill the brine tank back up? I'm sure I will need to clean the resin in the tank after its been running water through it without any regen cycles for months. Should Iron out or a similar product alone be enough? Anything I can run through the house's pipes to clean out calcium build up after I get the water system restored and working right again? Thanks this channel is great!
First, add about 100 lbs of salt and 5 gallons of water. Use Iron out to clean the resin waterestore.ca/products/pro-rust-out-water-softener-cleaner Once the water softener is working, the soft water will clean out the pipes. Please share video with friends and family!
Great info Gary, thanks. I have our softener set to regen every 4 days using 12lbs of salt. I wait until I can just see the water in the salt bin then add two 40lb bags of salt.
Sounds good. Depending on your water's hardness and how much water you use (number of people in your household) the salt usage might be on the high side but when you have a time clock water softener like yours it's never exact compared to a usage based softener. Thanks for watching!
Im trying to figure out how to set salt dose. Mine ranges from 3-13 on the spec sheet but does not specifically say how to set in the manual. The only thing I can figure is adjusting water level
I have a water softener which looks like the one in your video. About 8 months ago our city said they were going to soften our water and to turn off the water softener. Now I see that there is some scale in the dishwasher (not bad) and the glassware is lookin a little cloudy. Our hot water tank flame went out because it said it over heated. Now I bought some salt because I don’t think the city treatment is enough. What should I set my softener at and how many days apart should it be for a regen?
Good video thanks. I understand it is going to be noisey. I want to insulate the noise because it is on the other side of a bedroom wall. Waht part should I try to insulate, salt tank or the Unit?

My dad has almost the exact same filter or softener but truthfully I don’t know what it is but I heard a noise from the closet it’s in and I saw regeneration in progress and now I’m here on a year old video at 2am
Gary, I'm a 73 year old single male who lives alone. How many gallons would you expect me to use in a month on average. The reason for my question is that I am going through a ton of salt each month and I suspect the installer set it up like he would for a family. I don't have a softener. It's just for water filtration. I need to adjust the regen cycle to the number of gallons I would use.
Do you have a video describing the mechanics in more detail - my softener will begin with a calve turning, then water running for about 10-15 minutes? Then silent. Sounds like pre fill, but i have water in the salt bin already. So..? I’ve never stuck around in the basement long enough to see what else may happen. That’s what I was curious about 🙏🏻
@@water_estore I had to clean out all the salt and water, about 4 inches from the bottom was a plastic four legged grate... never saw that before - anyway, I cleared that out, and underneath was the nastiest smelliest clump of salt/sludge I'd ever seen. Clearly, the softener wasn't working. Today - looks brand new and running like a champ! Thank you
Gary i got a culligan HE and its filling up in the brine tank. Not alot but about 4 inches higher than salt. I check and see that regen is about to happen in a few days. Is it normal for mines to fill up with water in the brine tank? Just bought this house too. Thnx.
Hello. Have learned a lot thus far with your help. One thing i need to learn is if mine is metered or timed, but.. either way, if i run a manual regen, will it reset the timmer or meter? Would hate to run it twice on one day wasting salt and water. Thx
If it has an electronic valve, when you run water in the house, if it is metered you'll see an icon flash on the screen. But yes, if you do a manual regeneration it will reset and go back to the schedule.
I have Culligan water softener and it's got a Bypass button, which I think it will get the water from my water well to the house directly, bypassing the water softening mechanism. When I do this, should I also turn off (unplug) the water softening control unit as well (so that it doesnt try to regen in this bypass mode, and to save electricity)?
@@water_estore So what happens if I hit the Bypass button, and dont turn off the control unit above it? Will it try to regenerate on its normal cycle and use water that is blocked (bypassed)? Would it damage the system in this situation?
I set the time of the softener brine tank to 2:00 am regeneration once done then is the resin tank regenerate automatically or do you program a regeneration time for that too
Thanks Gary. Great explanation. Not sure if you are still responding to questions, but if the control display gets unplugged (I have the Fusion 2 display), does this reset or cancell all the settings originally set up by the installer? Needless to say, I unplugged the display. 😒
Yes, still answering questions. No need to worry, when you plug it back in it goes back to the original settings, you just need to set the current time.
Hey Gary, I appreciate the videos. I have a water softener that is 5+ years old. It never made this noise before recently it is now making a noise like it is constantly in the prefill cycle of the regeneration cycle. I look at my water meter to my home and there is no water flowing, so I know there isn't a leak in that sense. What could this mean? replace a control head? replace the whole unit. Water is still soft in the home.
What would cause the tank to continue spewing out water even after the regeneration process has ended, which causes flooding? Is it a valve inside or a specific component failure?
OK- I guess my question is- What would cause the drain line to keep flushing water out even after the regen cycle has stopped and the power has been disconnected? Also, is there an online place to purchase general repair parts for Aqua Systems type? Thanks- @@water_estore
just bought a new house and the system regenerates pretty much non stop... constantly draining water, even before I move in and no water being used in the house, is this supposed to happen than often ?
Hi, just bought house with water softener (very new to me). I believe it goes through cycle every 14 days. I was wondering what the gallons remaining refers to and where all that water ends up? How much water does a water softener use and how it will affect my water utility bill? I'm contemplating either turning it off or using the bypass valve
This RUclips video of mine will help. ruclips.net/video/udmE-hhh084/видео.html You can bypass it to check out the difference but if you notice staining and difficulties with bathing, skin , hair and laundry you will soon take it back off bypass. Water usage depends on type of softener anywhere fom 12 gallons to 90 gallons (for a really old one) per regeneration.
There have been numerous studies done and it always ends up at the same place. No negative affect on the anerobic action in the tank, BUT since you will be using less soaps, shampoo and other cleaning products that will actually help the anerobic action within the tank. If you have a concrete tank you may get some corrosion on the outlet after 20 or more years. My water softener and every contractor, plumber, architect and builder I know does the same. "The juice is worth the squeeze"
@@water_estore Thank you! I have been reading both positive and negatives on this and it gets confusing. I was also worried about the concrete tank as that is what I have.
You need to replace seals and pistons, this video explains how ruclips.net/video/RhvspR3PAw8/видео.html waterestore.ca/search?type=product&q=clack*%20piston*

Hi thanks for your video. Just to clarify, my system is setup to backwash, draw down, soften, backwash, rinse and fill brine tank. When the softener is in a mode called “softening” is this for when the water is in the softener (sounds like it) is in the brine tank? How long should the softening mode be, 60-240 mins? Thank you!
It sounds like you have a pre fill water softener. I am not familiar with the correct programming for those. I would contact whomever you purchased it from or the the manufacturer.
I believe I have the same water softener from the water store your showing in this video but its a cream colour. Its about half/3/4 full of water over the salt. Is this normal? I tried cleaning the bottom horizontal slits, connecters (except for screw cap connector as it doesnt seem to turn). The water where i live is generally pretty hard. Thanks!
I hit the regen cycle button and I am not sure if I did it right. I put bleach in the system because the water system company said that instead of iron out
Hit the button once to schedule a regen at your normal regen time. Hold it down for 5 seconds and when you hear it start, let go and it will go through the regen cycle right now.
Hello Gary, I have a Clack WS1 and during my systems regeneration cycle, I noticed that water is draining the whole time except during the "fill" step. I watched each step of the cycle and it does Backwash, Brine Draw Dn, Backwash, Rinse, and Fill). Is this normal for it to drain water the whole time? I only checked since recently I have noticed the yard was slightly flooded the morning of the regen cycles, but I have had this system now for about 6 months and never noticed that before. Thank you for any info !
Hi my won’t start regeneration even manually, I replaced wire kit , motor and position sensor, screen Just blink regenerate now and doesn’t do anything, is this valve or timer?
@@water_estore is a True Blue TB45 , like nortstar they one of same 2 tanks Systems, I am actually also was trying to figure how hard to turn cam Gear should be, its hard to turn by hand , when I turn manually, I am going to take apart and change seal kit , I was trying to figure out how hard should it be? Should it turn easily?
It would depend what cycle you were in when you cancelled the regeneration. If it was 3 minutes before the end of the fill cycle there would not be enough water in with the salt to make the correct amount of brine.
Hello. Thank you for this informative video. I have a post fill water softener in the garage. During each regeneration process, it is so loud that is heard inside the house in the three rooms near the garage. Is this normal? It happens at 3:00 am and it wakes me up every time. Can this be programmed do go off during the day? Thank you.
Probably normal. Yes, you can change the settings so it goes off during the day just make sure it is ata time where no one is showering or doing laundry.

Good video how softeners work. I have a Culligan Mark 89 softener which will not regenerate. Seems to try to start but then shuts off after about 5-10 sec. Does not seem to be salt bridge or clogged drain line. Do you have any insight?
Hi Gary. My water softener is an aqua systems brand and the controller looks exactly like yours in the video. I think my regeneration duration is lasting 3 to 4 hours long. I don’t think that’s normal. Everything I see online it should be under 2 hours. Any advice?
If it is a pre fill water softener, that would be normal, for a post fill, that is not. This video explains the difference ruclips.net/video/GedMruLfXhY/видео.html
Gary, I need to have my softener in by pass when my hose bibs are in use. Can my softener regenerate while in by pass mode? I have a sprinkler on a timer for early morning and put the softener into by pass when I go to bed at night. If a regeneration cycle occurs while in by pass will it work?
If your water is 109 gpg hard how often should I regenerate my water, I have a fleck 5600sxt, and the water only feels soft after a regeneration. My well water is crazy bad, no iron though. 1880 ppm of caco2
What should I do if it’s been a year since The water softener has been turned on? We just moved into a house a year ago but it’s been off since we bought the home. Any advice?
Yes, add a cup of cleaner to the brine tank waterestore.ca/products/pro-res-care-water-softener-resin-cleaner and manually regenerate the softener. You might need to do it a couple of times and keep an eye on it in case it leaks.
Should my water softener and my whole house well water filter regenerate at different times of the day? The whole house well water filter regenerates every night at 2am. And the softener regenerates after 1000 gallons is used and waits until 2am also. I don't want to contaminate the softener by regenerating it with raw rusty water (6.8 ppm of iron). Thank you!
Likely some excess iron or sediment in the water softener that was not flushed out during regeneration. You can either increase the rinse time or shorten the time between regenerations.
@@water_estore currently my system is set to regenerate after 2400 gallons used. In your opinion, should I lower? If so, to what? Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi Gary. Just curious. Does the drain tube that runs into the sink drain constantly as a regen is taking place? Mybwayers very hard so was winderi g if my tank has not regenerating enough. So i did a munual regen and it seemed for the whole time it was running the drian tube was shooting out water.
Thank you Gary!! I also saw some other videos where someone had the salt level to around 2 and the days until empty showed 62 days. In another video someone else had the salt level up to 7 and the days until empty were 332. I have my salt up to level 7 as well and my days until empty are only 60. Is that normal? Should i be concerned? Thank you for all your great videos and for taking the time to reply!
A regeneration will likely not get rid of the dirt, it is likely leftovers from poor quality salt. To get rid of it you need to clean out your brine tank. This video will show you how ruclips.net/video/BQT7c9wIzWY/видео.html
Thanks good info I moved in to a home with watersoftner my question I read meter for a day with regeneration stage and water usage was 850 litres .85 m3or 224 gallons crazy high with family of 3 and all high efficiency appliances it’s a short unit with salt brine by water company and next day took meter reading it’s normal for family what’s your thoughts called company and put it on by pass thanks info might help other people thanks again softener was ok first 8 months now water bill to high
The industry standard for water usage for a family is 75 gallons per person per day. A water softener only uses water when is clean is itself which although it varies by make and model is typically about 40 gallons every 5 days. If your water usage has increased significantly I would check your toilets to make sure water isn’t running through them
If you have a twin media tank water softener it will always produce soft water even during regeneration. All other water softeners will be off line or on bypass while in regeneration. You do not bypass it yourself during regeneration.
My water Conditioner Regens for about an hour around 1:00 am and its set up to drain all the water down my driveway. Is this normal? I'm afraid what this will do to my water bill.
When the metered regeneration is triggered does the regeneration happen right away or is it then scheduled for the next say 2 am timeframe? Only concerned that the regeneration happens in the middle of the day which would mean no water supply during the process unless it goes into bypass mode during the regeneration. Any help here would be appreciated.
Great question! They are setup to regenerate at the regeneration time for the reason you mentioned. They can be setup to regenerate right away but normally are not.
Quick question: When the water softener regenerates should it be using a lot of water to regenerate? And does it flush the water heater at all? Whenever mine regenerates then I won't have any hot water for a bit or at least not as hot of water until the water heater has time to heat up water. Please and thank you in advance!
The amount of water used during regeneration can vary from 13 gallons to almost 100 based on the type of water softener you have. I cannot see why it would have any affect on the hot water tank whatsoever.
Gary the Water Guy That's ridiculous, verging on criminal! There is no reason why 13 gallons are required, let alone 100. Why are US appliances so inefficient?! I'm in the UK. My softener is a twin tank system, meaning it can soften while regenerating, it's non electric, metered, and uses exactly 17 litres to regenerate which takes under ten minutes. I probably get through five kilos of salt a month. My softener is about the size of a microwave oven standing on its end. It can deliver fifty litres of softened water a minute which is enough to run three showers simultaneously- if my incoming supply was big enough! I live in one of the hardest water regions in the country and it performs perfectly using a fraction of the salt and water US models seem to.
I have a fusion xt 70 and th digital readout is flashing Regen Today. Does that mean I need to do something or does it mean that it will to so without intervention
@@water_estore I did the regeneration cycle but the water never drained during the cycle. I had a pole in it I did feel a lil tug like it was sucking but not much. Truthfully I haven’t put salt in it for a long while. The water lvl is about 22 inches and I was thinking is took some way out and then put salt to see if that does anything? I’m new to this. My family hadn’t put any salt for a couple of years really so i don’t know if that would cause a problem.
Hi Gary, Can the brine water that gets ejected during regeneration be used for gardening or should it go straight down the drain? I can't find any information on this online. Thank you

Thanks Gary, great explanation! Occasionally we will lose water pressure in the house, could the water softener system be the cause of this? Thanks!
Could be, you can test it by following the process outlines in this video. ruclips.net/video/tCQQxiT-zoc/видео.html

Can we save the water from regen and use it for other purpose? Such as washing floor..plants...?!
Not for washing floors or plants, too much sodium. I can't think of any purpose.
Is it normal to hear a gurgling sound at the end of the drain hose when doing a regen. ?
Yes, it is.

Thnx.
Yes, Culligan water softens are post fill so they add water before the next regeration cycle.
I got lost once I press play lol 😂 thanks for video
Thanks for watching
When it regenerates it can be pretty noisy. Is there anything that can be done to reduce the noise?
No, nothing.
They are all noisy LOL
I have Culligan water softener and it's got a Bypass button, which I think it will get the water from my water well to the house directly, bypassing the water softening mechanism. When I do this, should I also turn off (unplug) the water softening control unit as well (so that it doesnt try to regen in this bypass mode, and to save electricity)?
Yes, you can unplug the softener too, but it is not necessary.
@@water_estore So what happens if I hit the Bypass button, and dont turn off the control unit above it? Will it try to regenerate on its normal cycle and use water that is blocked (bypassed)? Would it damage the system in this situation?
What timing between a softener regeneration and the time setting of the resin tank regeration
Sorry, I don't understand what you are asking.
The water that comes out after regeneration, can I use it to water my plants?
You mean the stuff going to the drain? No, because it is full of salt.
This usually means that the piston is stuck and water is running continuously to drain. This video might help ruclips.net/video/hXcQ7qCxvjY/видео.html
What would cause the tank to continue spewing out water even after the regeneration process has ended, which causes flooding? Is it a valve inside or a specific component failure?
Depends on exaxtly where the water is coming from. This video might help you to identify ruclips.net/user/shortsB1BBYt--pwY
OK- I guess my question is- What would cause the drain line to keep flushing water out even after the regen cycle has stopped and the power has been disconnected? Also, is there an online place to purchase general repair parts for Aqua Systems type? Thanks- @@water_estore
Hi, my system has been increasingly letting water out from a pipe that comes from that equipment. Does that mean that is not regenerating? Thank you.
During regeneration this is normal, while in service, it is not.
just bought a new house and the system regenerates pretty much non stop... constantly draining water, even before I move in and no water being used in the house, is this supposed to happen than often ?
No, the valve likley needs to be rebuilt. This video will help you ruclips.net/video/RhvspR3PAw8/видео.htmlsi=uv-aVEOzu3Vp-hBe
That video doesn't answer the question she asked LOL
Wish someone would talk about the effects water softeners had on septic systems.
Why does my water keep flowing even when it’s in service?

Is it normal for the pressure tank to run for quite a while during this regeneration cycle? I’m not sure if we have pre-fill or post-fill.
Yes it is.

Thanks!
This video should help you trouble shoot that concern with your water softener ruclips.net/video/Zikmilf_Tu0/видео.html
Yes, that is correct, water runs to the drain during every cycle except fill and of course when it is in service.
Hi my won’t start regeneration even manually, I replaced wire kit , motor and position sensor, screen Just blink regenerate now and doesn’t do anything, is this valve or timer?
What make is it? If it is Clack water softener like the one in this video and it won't start manually the circuit board needs replacement.
What happens if you cancel a regen with 3 minutes left on it and now I have some standing salt in there?
It would depend what cycle you were in when you cancelled the regeneration. If it was 3 minutes before the end of the fill cycle there would not be enough water in with the salt to make the correct amount of brine.
Thank you Gary! So helpful!
Glad it was helpful! Please share video with friends and family.

Good video how softeners work. I have a Culligan Mark 89 softener which will not regenerate. Seems to try to start but then shuts off after about 5-10 sec. Does not seem to be salt bridge or clogged drain line. Do you have any insight?
The motor might not be working or the piston is seized in the valve.
Hi Gary. My water softener is an aqua systems brand and the controller looks exactly like yours in the video. I think my regeneration duration is lasting 3 to 4 hours long. I don’t think that’s normal. Everything I see online it should be under 2 hours. Any advice?

Gary, I need to have my softener in by pass when my hose bibs are in use. Can my softener regenerate while in by pass mode? I have a sprinkler on a timer for early morning and put the softener into by pass when I go to bed at night. If a regeneration cycle occurs while in by pass will it work?
No, your water softener needs to be in service to regenerate.

Yes, that’s what I would do

Yes, add a cup of cleaner to the brine tank waterestore.ca/products/pro-res-care-water-softener-resin-cleaner and manually regenerate the softener. You might need to do it a couple of times and keep an eye on it in case it leaks.
Should my water softener and my whole house well water filter regenerate at different times of the day? The whole house well water filter regenerates every night at 2am. And the softener regenerates after 1000 gallons is used and waits until 2am also. I don't want to contaminate the softener by regenerating it with raw rusty water (6.8 ppm of iron). Thank you!
No, you need to cahnge the regen time so they never regenerate at the same time of day.
Lately, right after regeneration, I’ve notice water coming out of house faucets has been dark brown. Why does this happen?
Likely some excess iron or sediment in the water softener that was not flushed out during regeneration. You can either increase the rinse time or shorten the time between regenerations.
@@water_estore currently my system is set to regenerate after 2400 gallons used. In your opinion, should I lower? If so, to what? Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, it does until the last cycle. Sometimes slower and sometimes faster.
Is regeneration the same as recharge?
Great question, yes it is.
In the morning hours after my pre filled softener regenerates, water pressure goes down to zero for 5 mins or so. Is it normal?
No it is not, unless you mean while it is regenerating
There’s dirt in my system salt tank and I was told to do the regen cycle is this accurate?
A regeneration will likely not get rid of the dirt, it is likely leftovers from poor quality salt. To get rid of it you need to clean out your brine tank. This video will show you how ruclips.net/video/BQT7c9wIzWY/видео.html

The industry standard for water usage for a family is 75 gallons per person per day. A water softener only uses water when is clean is itself which although it varies by make and model is typically about 40 gallons every 5 days. If your water usage has increased significantly I would check your toilets to make sure water isn’t running through them

Yes, that is correct, it uses water to regenerate and clean itself.
my water softener has three tanks, one that has salt, another one that looks like in this video, and the third one. What's that for?
It might be a dual alternating water softener. While on tank is regenerating the other one is softening your water
@@water_estore After some google search, I found out it was carbon filter.
Hi. I am confused. Should the water softness be on bypass when regenerating ?
Softner *
If you have a twin media tank water softener it will always produce soft water even during regeneration. All other water softeners will be off line or on bypass while in regeneration. You do not bypass it yourself during regeneration.
Bypass is used when you are performing maintenance etc on the unit
Under Normal running operation it should never be set to bypass
My water Conditioner Regens for about an hour around 1:00 am and its set up to drain all the water down my driveway. Is this normal? I'm afraid what this will do to my water bill.
Most water softeners take 1-2 hours to regenerate, that is typical.
@@water_estore and how many gallons of water does that process use up?
How come i have two resin tanks without salt cointainer ?

I really do not know. I would check with whomever the system was purchased from.
It also depends on the type if you have a demand regeneration system with dual tanks
@@spencerwilton5831 Everything here in the USA is bigger. Including the appliances and people
