- Learn about “Bellini and Giorgione in the House of Taddeo Contarini,” the final special presentation at our temporary home, Frick Madison. On view through February 4, 2024, this installation reunites-for the first time in some four hundred years-the Frick’s “St. Francis in the Desert” by Giovanni Bellini with Giorgione’s “Three Philosophers,” on rare loan from Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum. Presented in the chapel-like gallery in which Bellini’s panel has hung in isolated splendor, this show explores the two paintings’ shared history in an unprecedented display.

Absolutely agree! I was studying Art History in Australia (remotely for two semesters) and Xavier and Aimee kept me going through our endless lockdowns. That and the cocktails! ;)
I could not agree more. The Frick has always been my favorite art museum in NYC since I was a teenager. The memory of those terrible days made more bearable has cemented the Frick to my heart forever. What a gift!

A good close read of a painting is always fun: In the Bellini, there is no opportunity for abstraction. Nature is too immense. There is a plenitude of detail --- lingering faith in the great chain of being. In the Giorgione, there is the suggestion that the great chain of being is breaking down, that it will be replaced with the kind of abstractions that are symbolized by the notes and tablet. Abstraction allows the philosopher to look away from nature --- in turning away to see man (himself) as the measure of all things. Their position on the other side of the rock is also provocative. Could Giorgione be suggesting that outside of Plato's cave there are more abstractions?
You would have to visit the Galleria Accademia in Venice to see Giorgione & Bellini so snuggly together .
This is really good advice: the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice is a museum which houses the most important collection of Venetian painting in the world, including masterpieces by Bellini, Titian and Giorgione.
