Just had my left shoulder replacement, after I had the right replaced in 2019. The first surgery taught me a lot. And preparing for your recovery is key. Having a recliner this time has gotten me better sleep. A continuous ice machine is a wonderful thing.
Hi Jenfnp, which ice machine did you buy & from where? I'm so confused looking on amazon. Thanks!
I had my total shoulder replacement 4 weeks ago and was happy that I had a simple cotton/poly sling to wear in the shower as well as a front closing bra that I was able to put on at the 2 week mark.
I was able to wash my hair in the shower with one hand. With arthroscopic surgery I was allowed to take a shower on the 3rd day. One thing I had to call the nurses about was a bra! I lasted 4-5 days without a bra. I'm 80 and saggy so I felt sweaty without a bra. It would be great to make a video about that. I tried strapless but the wired strapless were awful when sitting so much. I couldn't tolerate regular straps so I finally settled with the crisscross straps....still uncomfortable, but the best option for me. My husband HAD to help with that because there's no way to hook the crisscrossed straps in the back with one hand. We had some hilarious moments as we learned to get the "girls" in the cups, the straps over opposite shoulders and him fumbling with the hooks and especially the strap hooks. Gotta have a sense of humor! Overall, I found that the rotator cuff surgery to not be as bad as I had heard. I used only one oxycodone the first night and a Tylenol the second. Not bad for extensive rotator cuff tears, bicep tears, spurs, etc. I had a great clinician. That helps. And a funny husband...even better.
A funny but helpful husband makes life so much easier. My husband has even helped me with personal hygiene, and years ago I would have never thought him capable. Sometimes they surprise us!
It's amazing to me that you are make this video to help others like me to learn more about taking care of myself after having shoulder surgery. Thank you very much.
Just had surgery for a massive tear. My doctor didn't chat with me after surgery so I didn't get any instructions. really appreciate this!
my goodness that's terrible I pray you are healing well
You need to sue it’s their job to Inform you
Ask the doctor if he doesn't tell you. Just ask
Please Don’t let Terry Madsen do your shoulder surgery. A doctor that’s good and who cares you shouldn’t have to ask him what to do after surgery. They are the doctor that is treating you. That’s what they get. Paid to do .They should have already informed you previously about aftercare ….stay away from doctors who don’t because all they care about is pocketing the money especially if it’s workers comp
@@arlenerobertspittsburghste3136 You should 😊😊😊
So helpful i just had rotator cuff surgery today , i can't still believe it, looking forward to recovery now 🙌
@r laze with all the honesty , i feel better than ever , holding back pain and doing physical therapy hoping to fix something mayor is wrong in my opinion. thank you for asking.
@r laze you got this!! I remember watching every youtube video about surgery and people like me that went on getting it done. I'm sure you'll be fine and happy when everything is over 😊 . Sending you alots of strength 💪 ❤️
Scar pad is a great idea. I’ve never heard of them. Wish I would have seen this sooner. Areas were so sensitive that I flipped shirts inside out because seams were rubbing. Lots of great tips. 👍🏽
Thank you so much! These tips were very helpful, especially the recommendation for Tegaderm.
Thanks for sharing these tips. I’m having rotator cuff surgery soon and thank goodness, I kept my mom’s electric recliner after her transition. As well, these tips will definitely help as I begin purchasing all of the things mentioned. Great job!!! 🙌🏾🫶🏾
I've now had my surgery for a massive rotator cuff tear. No pain at all during or after surgery and no pain meds except Advil once in a while. Had the nerve block which allows for lighter general anesthesia. This is definitely the way to go. I actually drove the next day (without surgeons blessing or knowledge) but I wouldn't recommend it. Anesthesia after effects are worse than the surgery but still not that bad. Things like sore throat tickle, woozyiness, peeing a lot, etc. 4 days latter I could drive with no problem except your sling gets in the way. I also got a Wonder Care sling which is MUCH lighter, cooler, cheaper, and less bulky than the traditional abduction sling but does the same thing. I added a pad/spacer between my body and arm. 3 weeks after surgery now and still no pain except during physical therapy when they push the limits trying to get full motion back. It is very important to get as much motion with PT before surgery too. The most important things to do are: get a wide (50 inches or so) powered recliner, shirt with snaps along the sides for easy access, a very experienced physical therapist, Advil, practice using the shoulder/arm/hand not being operated on well before surgery, get a computer mouse for the good shoulder side and practice, exercise your lower arm and hand but keep your upper arm stationary. Also get a webbed shower sling and stool for the shower. Finally if you use a hair dryer clamp it to a microphone boom stand so it's right above your head. This works so well I will keep it after I'm healed. Good luck
I don’t know if you’re still following this thread, but what kind of spacer did you get? I’m having surgery in a month. I’m going to order the sling you suggested. Any other advice is welcomed. Thanks.
@@Beth01111 Hi Beth I just cut a piece of foam and sewed rip stop nylon around it with velcro on both pieces to hold it to the sling. At night you may want to detach the spacer as it's more comfortable. The BEST advice I can give is to get a good powered recliner because you will be sleeping in it for at least six weeks. I got an extra wide one since I'm pretty big. Be sure it's powered to tilt back and if possible get one that goes back almost flat.
My surgeon had me in physical therapy the same day as surgery and since there is no pain for a day or so because of the nerve block it was easy. The real physical therapy becomes pretty painful as they are trying to get maximum motion so your shoulder doesn't freeze, this is very important. I went to 35 PT sessions. If you want more suggestions email me at loren@sciencerd.com Good Luck
No pain?
Mine was brutal. 7 anchors placed
I’ve had 5 shoulder surgeries and to wash my hair, I did this in my kitchen sink! It was a very easy process and an easy way to keep my hair clean! When sleeping, I put a small pillow under my arm which kept my arm from moving! It helped me sleep better!
Any other tips woould be group, since you have experience
in a few months getting my 5th also on my dominant arm,,,,how was it for you?
@@frenchull15 surgeries but why can you tell me ??....did your hand motion good after every surgery ?? 😢
Some stool softener are helpful and then another thing buy a stirring wheel knob and I put it on my car so I could drive 1 handed . 6 weeks is a long time to go without driving . I drove 4 days after surgery not having to dependent on somebody else . really pretty safe and easy to do and you won't have to try to even lift your surgery shoulder up to rotate the steering wheel after the 6 weeks when you lose the sling and rotate the steering wheel .
Yes! Great tips!
Thanks for the info. Lots to think about. Let the fun begin.
Thx for the info. RSRS coming up for me and I’d never thought of this stuff. 5 stars!✨
I just had a reverse total shoulder replacement. My incision was totally covered and waterproof when I left the hospital. I had a on-Q medical pouch attached for three days, then I could remove myself. After removing the on-Q medical pac I could shower all I wanted. For me there were no stitches or staples and on day 22 I get to remove the catacomb covering the wound. Stri strips are left on til they fall off on their own. Started physical therapy the day after surgery in hospital and continues at least until I see my doctor. I see him 22 days after surgery. I have been totally surprised that there has been very little pain so far nothing over about a level 2! I did take meds as was told to do. Had my meals prepared and did practice a lot ahead. It was on my dominate arm.
Glad you are well, did you recuperate 100%? Was it a partial tear or complete tear? How long did it take you to get full mobility?
@@ameeerivera9361 yes I have had a full recovery, 8 weeks therapy and have yearly checkup in July after one year. Had very little pain but have heard others say they had extreme pain. I had no tear just worn out and bone n bone, that is why it was a total reverse replacement. Glad I had it done.
@@starfire8221 thank you so much for your reply.
@@starfire8221 do you have any limitations? How long did it take you to get full mobility ?
@@ameeerivera9361 well I had full mobility at about 6 weeks with the exception on being able to reach around my back to hook a bra. I went to front hooks☺️. I was naughty and did drive at 4 weeks but was released to drive at 6 weeks. I was very diligent to not go over board with therapy because she told me it would do more harm. One thing I recommend is a portable hand held bidet. I got mine from Amazon. I would have had one put on the toilet but I live in a manufactured home and would have had to replace the whole toilet.
Love these practical ideas. I’ll share this with my patients having shoulder surgery. Thanks Michelle!
You are welcome!! 🙏 Thanks so much for sharing this video with your patients Mobile Therapy Group!
I’ll be having total shoulder replacement plus a rotator cuff. I’m 60 years old and I’m only 5 ft tall. 28 years of being a nurse I had to lift patients in beds. Because of my height I couldn’t use my legs to properly lift. I’m a good nurse, but not a good patient! Please pray for my husband! I’m a weenie when it comes to pain!
Sending prayers for you AND your husband! 😆
God bless my you sweety !!!!!
@@VirtualHandCare ~ Thank you so much!
@@christinebender7193 ~ Thank you Christine!
The pain is bad. Di not feel like a weenie. Even my dr warned me that shoulder surgery pain was horrible. Take your pain meds, ice packs. You will not be able to lay in a bed. Am still sleeping in a recliner as most folks I've talked to had to also.
I’m having surgery this coming Thursday in my left shoulder. This is definitely helpful.
how did it go and how do you feel afterwards?
Watch all of the videos. Listen to the doctor, and therapist. I have found much more helpful information on the internet. Post care was not very helpful. The internet is helpful.
How did it go?
I jad surgery 13 years ago with a full tear. Out of the blue one day I realized I couldn't lift my right arm again. Had an MRI last week. Another full tear larger then the last one and I honestly don't know how it happened. Thankcyou so so much for all of your brilliant tips! I very much appreciate you.
That’s scary. Speedy recovery.
omg! how is it now???
Excellent information. I am preparing for a total shoulder replacement and your tips are very helpful. Thank you.
I just had my 2nd rotator cuff surgery on my non dominant arm. Strapless cotton dresses & tops that had alot of support (no bra needed) were. Lifesaver!
A water bottle like bikers use was great- easy to drink out of hands free & they don't spill.
I also had a pill holder labeled with each pill type.
2nd?
Thank you, I am having shoulder surgery in 2 weeks. Very helpful.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. YOUR VIDEO IS VERY HELPFUL. I WAS RELEASED YESTERDAY FROM A ROTATOR CUFF / SHOULDER BLADE FRACTURE SURGERY. THANK YOU!!!
happy healthy healing
I’m not sure what happened to my shoulder yet. My Dr kind of brushed it off months ago but I was in excruciating pain for three months and now I’ll have tingling down my arm, loss of range of motion and strength. I have a dr appt next Tuesday with a specialist I think I might need surgery but I will find out soon. Thank you for sharing. I’m mentally preparing
My surgery is in 2 days - rotator cuff and bicep tears on dominant R side. I have been trying to practice left handed
Thanks for doing this video
You’re welcome! Wishing you a smooth recovery!

Thank you so much! I’m going to be having rotator cuff surgery sometime in the next 3 months so it’s a perfect time to start getting ready. Great recommendations!
Yep same. Mine is in 3 weeks
All the above very good suggestions.
I wish someone had told me about larger button down leisure shirts...this would have helped; although, a friend told me the day before my surgery...so I scrambled.
Thanks for the tips.... I may have rotator cuff surgery and some of your tips will absolutely help!!!!
Very helpful. I'm having rotator cuff surgery on Oct 4th..
I am having my right dominant shoulder done this Thursday! I am trying to get as prepared as I can. I have had surgery on my lower arm and also carpal tunnel but it takes so long to do anything with my left hand. ugh. Thank you for this video..
Hope it went well - my surgery is Nov 12.
Lmk how the post-surgery pain is☺️

🙌🙌🙌🙏❤️ thank you for this video it was awesome
thanks! a lot, same spot, but its still small, youre video helps me not to worry about this bump
I didn't shower for three days post-op! I was on too many pain meds, and didn't feel like moving.
I showered by myself, had a Sling for the shower and rolled up a hand towel to put under my arm. Had a pump top on the shampoo and conditioner, & used a (HEETA) hair scalp massager to rub in the shampoo, and conditioner, and it worked beautifully! I used a long handled Natural boar bristle brush to wash my body, & was very easy.
Thank you for your video. It Is really helpful 🙂 had rotator cuff surgery on side almost 2 yeara ago, and I am having the other one done next month. You have given good information and reminded me of some of the things I need to get, like the dressings. I'm gelling a loan electric recliner provided. I feel more nervous this time as I know it was quite tough in the first 6 weeks. 🇳🇿
Thank you so much for making this video! I'm going in to have clavicle surgery and I needed to find out all I could beforehand. Very appreciative! Very helpful!
How was the pain after surgery how many days did u take to recover
How are you doing now after surgery? I’m considering getting this surgery too. Which option did you go for?
Gracias por compartir tan valiosos tips,un abrazo gracias mil!!

Thank you so much dor this my surgery is coming soon
Very helpful. My surgery is next week and your video helped me prepare everything in advance.
How was it ?? Did you had pain and how long after ??
How did your surgery go? What surgery did you do?
This was great advice
Good information, Thank you.
Bravo 🙌 signing Now!
Thank you for the very practical tips!
Great information. I was preparing for my surgery which will be in next week. Thank you so much.
You are welcome! Best of luck for a speedy recovery!
Thank you so much for a very helpful video. I am having a rotator cuff repair in 2 weeks . I am getting prepared as you suggested in this video, I am having shoulder length curly hair that I usually put in a pony tail and I am wondering if there is a way that I’ll be able to do this with one hand! I’ll appreciate your advice. 🙏
No way. You need to show someone how you want it done before surgery. 5 weeks after my rotator cuff surgery I was finally able to put mine in a clip by bending over so my sore arm was dangling and twist with one hand and clip with the other.
Excellent information, thank you 😊
Very helpful tips! Thanks to you I will get to my first shoulder replacement surgery much much more smoothly!
I would highly recommend the Luxe brand bidet for under $50.00. For some toilet seats, you need to buy bumpers to go under your toilet seat. This works great for men and women.
Great idea!
Thank you. ❤
just had mine replaced day 3 i was told to take the wrap off it and take a normal shower. i am on day 4 and have 0 pain
Great tips! I had my first shoulder replacement 7 yeats ago and it went fairly well. Now, I am facing the other shoulder getting replaced. I like the tips on the Tegaderm for showering. How I wish I would have known about that 7 years ago! Trying to put a bra on with one hand is rather difficult to say the least. I am ambidextrous so things weren't quite as difficult. Dry shampoo is something else I was looking into and also plenty of baby wipes because that can often freshen one up sufficiently before you want to attempt the first shower.
Thank you! Yes baby wipes are a great one to add!
I’m having shoulder AND elbow surgery at the same time next month and I’m really nervous for the recovery. It’s in my dominant arm too 😅
At least you are preparing yourself! Best of luck to you!
I just had a reversed full right shoulder replacement 8 days ago, they stitch inside and glued outside skin, I took a shower and wash my hair the very next day with my left hand. The nerve block took a full four days to wear out. I have take only 3 of the 12 medications they prescribed (take as needed), only taken anti-inflammatory, aspirin and vitamin D. Pain is very mild and I am doing a lot of stuff around already. Today I had to drive, no big deal, they said 6 weeks because there is a concern for those that jump on OxyContin ( I don't recommend drive if you are taking drugs for pain) I have not taken anything for pain so I am very confident to drive. Tomorrow I am getting a steering wheel Spinner Knob that will help a lot driving with one hand, that may be a tip #6. Biggest issue for me is fall asleep on my back, I am a belly down sleeper.
Excellent
The most difficult time for me was dealing with the pain in the evenings and night trying to sleep. My next door neighbor recommended smoking a little Marijuana bud. He gave me a sample of some stuff he called purple haze. It did the trick! I still have pain but it doesn’t bother me so much. Be careful though because it gives you the munchies. you find yourself making more trips to the fridge
I am having my EIGHTH shoulder surgery. It's a left shoulder replacement surgery. I am not looking forward to it. But I am looking for my life to move forward after I recover!
Oh my god why so many surgery ?? 😢 This make me sad plz can you expain
@zohebansari6429 awe thank you. I have had rotator cuff repairs. I have had biceps tenodisis. I have had latissmus dorsi tendon transfer. Those are the last ditch procedures before shoulder replacements. I fell in late June and messed up my elbow and the shoulder, so now I have to have my shoulder replaced. My doctor isn't sure why my tendons didn't heal well. I used to work home health, and I had a difficult patient. I was trying to get off the case. I already had a 40-hour third shift job taking care of a 1 year old. My boss wouldn't take me off the case. I continually asked to be taken off, and I ended up injuring my rotator cuffs. They repaired the first and then hurried up and let me go so they didn't have to repair the second one. The work they had me doing wasn't appropriate for my shoulder after the first surgery. Working as a nurse is rewarding, but working for a company that doesn't care about your health isn't a good thing.
Great advice, many thanks
Thank you so much. Full reverse shoulder surgery and tissue grafts to follow very soon… your videos are SO helpful……. @Grandpa-Chris.
I am halfway through my RC repair. Doc found it when he was going in for a bone spur removal. MRI did NOT show a tear, but he find a small partial. It tripled my recovery time, but at least I should not have to go back in there.
I will preface this tip as a guy (ladies are welcome to the info as well). Shave/buzz-cut the armpit of the surgery side. Even with showering, you will have trouble reaching inside the pit enough to get spotless. At least starting hair-free can help.
I wish I knew this for myself before I started with my recovery.
This is a great tip!
It wasn't insanely itchy growing back?
Having total left should replacement surgery on Friday. They just delivered that exact sling/brace that your wearing.
I suggest getting a grab stick for yourself and also do a lot of meal prep if you live alone and pre-cut things for yourself that you won't be able to cut with your dominant hand
Thank you! so glad that I found this video will have surgery next month and this is a great help!
My buddy saved my ass with a fifth of everclear, Coca Cola, and raising cane’s chicken. Not even joking.
buy floss picks! yup, hand held shower, shower seat will make you feel safe.
How long did it take others to be able to remove the sling after surgery to shower?
good info!
Very practical, sensible advice. Thank you.
So helpful! Just had lipoma removal on my left clavicle - thank you as the surgeons don’t give you this practical advice. Hoping the same recovery 😊
thank you 👏👏👏
Best video I've seen yet on post rotator cuff surgery. I bought a couple shirts with snaps and buttons as well as bilateral patch pockets so I didn't have to wear a bra.
Good ideas! Best of luck on your recovery!
Talk to a stroke victim who has usage of one arm. They are a wealth of info.
Get yourself a polar ice machine !!!
my arm will be immobilized for 3 weeks and i've been instructed not to remove my arm from the sling at any time during those weeks. i'm getting a left-handed bidet, meal prep, and getting shirts and dresses and opening up the seam on that shoulder and using velcro for closure.
thanks for sharing this video I wrote down 5 tips already, I have a small tear on my rotator cuff my surgery is October 20th I have saw way to many scary video about the pain and fear I am frighten. I am sending positivity energy for complete healing your way, do you have a suggestion on how to was under the injured arm when its not supposed to move? Can we spray deodorant or a cotton swab in the area to clean the smell? And do you have a suggestion on stool softer
I am so scared to have my rotator cuff surgery next week, I have put it off for almost year. I have had several other procedures and I was ok but the thought of the rotator cuff surgery is making my stomach turn. 😭
How did your surgery go? I am in so much pain so I don’t know if it is worth it, thank you
I took my hand off the sling after 1 week and started working on my computer, but within a short time I started to feel pain and got worried, I had also used my surgery hand as support for cooking my food. Within a few hours the pain was apparent and I was worried.
Any thoughts on what is okay after 1 week without sling, can I drive short distances, can I type? What would constitute safe use of the hand that was repaired?
Thank you your video has been very helpful. I will be under going rotator cuff surgery for a tear in October.
How was it ??
Had shoulder surgery in June .. i had tore my rotatory cuff off! Then during my recovery time … fell twice…🤪 so here we go again .. I go back in 2 weeks for Another surgery to repair 3 tears now .. ugh
I wish I had seen this video before my surgery 🥲... very useful!
Washing arm pit on repaired is difficult since you can't raise your arm to rinse. Shower massage would help or else wash at the sink.
Will have TRSR (finally) but my BIG problem is bad arthritis in my LEFT hand. So what do you do when your “good” hand is “bad?” It also needs surgery!!! 😩
And I’m a widow, so no help at home..until I hire someone.
I hope you're okay and was able to have help!
Learn to sleep on ur back and practice getting out of bed or a chair one handed, I had a hole and two tares repaired, the pain the first few days was wild.
You are spot on! Great ideas to add!
Thankyou very helpful 🤞🤞🤩🤩🌻
I was seeing or getting info of things to help with little info on types or things, like get a big shirt, so what kind. I took a hoodie and stretch pants to the surgery, the choice of a hoodie was it was big and zipped up. Saw a lot of videos with button shirts and wondered, how do you do that. They have bed ladders, it's fabricand ties to the bed and it appears it could be hung in the bathroom. I could get on the pot by putting my hand on the front of the bowl or on the little stand by the toilet next to it and lowering myself, we just happened to renovate the bathroom and put in a 4 inch higher toilet. There's various holding devices for handicapped or older people that would have helped for food, should also get precut foods, like lettuce. I was never much into sandals or flip flops and didn't really find thing, I see now an ad on TV for no-tie shoes that you just slide in.
WHERE can I get that ice pack sling?
Thank you. I will be having surgery soon. What type of exercise do you go through?
I'm due for right shoulder surgery. I have a recliner but the control lever is on the right side and it requires a hard pull. Unless someone has a method for me to use my left arm to reach all the way across and down, it will not be usable. I can't afford to buy another chair with a left side control. Any suggestions?
You may find a handle extender that may help. Depending on this type of handle you have but one like this could be an option- amzn.to/3xX57oM
I have that same problem I mention to my husband and he decided it was best to get a lift chair with a remote we search for a sale with finally found one for under 299.00 I was very afraid of trying to twist and turn on the right side and the surgery in October Im preparing now I saw someone mention a hand extender to reach the side of the control that's a great Idea, but if your in pain the last thing I will think of is a extender, however that's a perfect idea. Blessing on your recovery
@@arlenerobertspittsburghste3136 thanks for that information. Would it be possible to share the name or model number of that chair? Perhaps I could buy it near to where I live. For the price you spoke of, I would probably just go ahead and buy it.
There are utube videos on how to make a recliner handle adapter out of 1.25" PVC. Very easy!

My son and Husband!
hi Michelle. how is your shoulder now. i go for rotator cuff surgery 27th feb.
Shoulder is great. No problems, however I had a Lipoma removed. A rotator cuff surgery is more involved. Best of luck!
Suggest " slip on " tennis shoes , as it is not possible to tie each shoe. I purchase TOMs tennis shoes.
And suggest shorts with no zipper or sweat pants.
One other thing is loose lounger pants, or gown/moomoo pajamas where it makes it easy to use bathroom.
Yes! Those type of pants are much easier to put on/take off 1 handed!
Excellent video but the list could be extended considerably. What about getting some freezable icepacks and regarding the clothing, I recommend from experience buying some t-shirts 2 sizes larger than you normally use. It sounds enormous but it isn't. Get say 3. I can't imagine how anyone can button a shirt with one hand. Having your arm locked against your side creates the most uncomfortable feeling of humidity in your armpit. I needed to get washed 3 times a day. It's difficult to access the armpit as the arm needs to be close to the body whilst it heals
If you have someone to help, get waterproof Band-Aids so you can shower... remove after shower and replace with regular ones :-)
what sling is that and where can I get one?
I received the sling from my doctor's office (its a Townsend) so I am not sure how you could get the same one.
@@VirtualHandCare thanks I am looking for a second sling for the shower and back up for when I have my surgery thanks for reply
But, how do I dry my back one handed? No one says anything about that. It's all about washing.
Tube dresses are easy to wear at first! Easy to pull up with one hand.
Yes!
I see your yoga mat . When can you do yoga again ! The biggest thing I am going to miss is a daily dog ward dog!
I was able to do downward dog within 3 weeks of the surgery but I just had a lipoma removed. Nothing was repaired. Can be a lot longer depending on the type of surgery. Fortunately, there are a lot of wonderful yoga modifications!
