They have a grill that covers the intake. Not sure why so many people get hung up on the idea of things being sucked into the jet. A jets impeller is better protected than any open prop.
The surface area of the intake is much larger than the surface area of the area of the nozzle. Thus, the velocity of the water entering the intake is much lower than the water exiting the nozzle.
They have bars running parallel to the vessel that acts as a sort of screen, and the impellers are designed to take hits from anything short of metal, rock, or other similarly hard objects. Woods, especially ones that have been in the water for a while, will be blended up

I think these kind of designs can be optimized for use with coal and wood, or would work more efficiently with conventional fuel, with a better turbine, and an internal recycling mechanism to get extra efficiency out of burning solid fuels And a steam pressure system would also act as a cooling system for the combustion cycle, and also provide steam pressure for the turbine... So a solid fuel - steam turbine jet motor This is more like an aircraft jet engine, with an opening that could either just shoot flames out of it, or a propeller could be attached and it would work like a regular propeller, propelled by internal combustion. The fire/hot gas jet is probably most robust, it just needs a pressure sensor to make sure water doesn't flood the combustion chamber on start up, and while idling. As soon as the turbine starts, water would leave the chamber, and any remnants would become steam The interior turbine would just sit in ball bearings, and have a variable nozzle high pressure steam jet instead of gears, to spin the turbine. Like a Turbo on a car. That way you get more degrees of travel than with a gear teeth system. It's like basically free-floating. And the smaller the hole size of the steam inlet, the higher PSI of the torque converter, and therefore more turbine speed, and more thrust. Also, more heat from more fuel being burned would increase steam psi, and also create more torque/rpms/thrust proportional to heat being produced. (Thermodynamics, Conservation of Energy) Then, the steam would be condensed to water and re-used, after actuation of the turbine.

About the same as a Seadoo. The way to make a silent propeller is a closely held military secret which has to do with special shapes, coatings, and techniques to reduce cavitation and air bubbles around the propeller; in this case impeller. The impeller does help to reduce noise as the shroud on submarine propellers. The only quite drive I know of is Magnetohydrodynamic drive or MHD.
