The 2nd July 2024 was the final day that the cross-border Enterprise, connecting Belfast and Dublin, operated out of Lanyon Place station after 48 years of service.
This was also the final day trains ran through Botanic before the seven week line closure for railway engineering works ahead of the opening of the brand new Grand Central transport hub, which is scheduled to open in the autumn.
Enterprise services, which began in 1947 and first operated out of the GNRI's Great Victoria Street station, were moved in April 1976 to the brand new Lanyon Place station, formerly known until 2018 as Belfast Central.
Although a new station opened at Great Victoria Street in 1995, Enterprise services continued to use Central due to insufficient capacity and lack of facilities at the former. However, upon opening of Grand Central, the Enterprise will return to its spiritual home, with a new hourly service being introduced.
On this historic final day, the 1320 Dublin to Belfast service, consisting of an IE Class 22000 DMU, is seen passing through Botanic at Platform 2 en route to its final destination, where it will arrive at 1535.
The Enterprise normally uses De Dietrich rolling stock, pulled by an IE Class 201 diesel electric locomotives. As a result of changes made following the closure of Great Victoria Street in May, most Enterprise services are temporarily being operated by Class 22000 sets, the dominant Intercity stock used by Iarnród Éireann.
As well as the Enterprise, we can also see an NIR Class 3000 DMU on a local NI Railways service, this being the 1455 from Bangor to Portadown arriving at Platform 1.
As of the date of publication, this footage is now consigned to history.
