- John Ford's first film in the Cavalry Trilogy, starring John Wayne, Henry Fonda and Shirley Temple. While out riding, Philadelphia Thursday (Shirley Temple) witnesses burned bodies. Colonel Thursday (Henry Fonda) and Captain Kirby York (John Wayne) discuss the possibility of the culprits. It seems to be the work of Chief Diablo's Band.

About Fort Apache (Theatrical Release - March 9, 1948):
The soldiers at Fort Apache may disagree with the tactics of their glory-seeking new commander. But to a man, they're duty-bound to obey-even when it means almost certain disaster.
John Wayne, Henry Fonda and many familiar supporting players from master director John Ford's "stock company" saddle up for the first film in the director's famed cavalry trilogy (She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande are the others). Roughhouse camaraderie, sentimental vignettes of frontier life, massive action sequences staged in Monument Valley-all are part of Fort Apache. So is Ford's exploration of the West's darker side.
Themes of justice, heroism and honor that Ford would revisit in later Westerns are given rein in this moving, thought-provoking film that, even as it salutes a legend, gives reasons to question it.
This is one of the greatest westerns ever made. The score is 100% on Rotton Tomatoes. I'm a big John Wayne fan and this is one of my favorite roles he did playing Captain York who knows the Apache real well. Director John Ford and actor John Wayne did so many amazing films together.
Fort Apache is one of the most nuanced portrayals of the Settler-Indian conflicts in the Western genre, understanding the plight of those in the conflict. Henry Fonda and John Wayne were excellent in their roles.
To me, this is one of John Ford's finest films overall. A masterpiece.
for me The grape of wrath
I think this movie was partly based on the 7th Cavalry and General Custer.
Best of the trio
The other two weren't so well done especially the yellow ribbon ...colour doesnt guarantee a better script
And it glorified custer too much not explaining his folly!
Captain 👩✈️ Kirby: Hang On!
But the entire film is far too rare. I have not seen it from beginning to end in three years. Bits and pieces of it, yes. But never the entire film. It is my belief that it may have fallen out of "style" with some of the political aspects of today. The other two films of the three are common enough, But Fort Apache seems to have been handed a warm bowl of "Film forget" stew.
Duke and Henry Fonda were excellent here I’ve always felt this was a somewhat underrated movie compared to many of the two’s more famous and well known films.
Shirley Temple was so beautiful in this movie , and was acting with her future husband .
Actually she was already married to Agar since they got married back in 1945. In 1948 she gave birth to their daughter. In two years they would be divorced since it seems Agar had issues with drinking. But in that same year she married her second husband and they stayed married for the next 55 years until his death.
Love a John Wayne western!
Henry Fonda’s character of colonel light, Owen Thursday is spot on. Excellent cast. Anything directed by Rear Admiral Ford is worth a watch
Among the top five Westerns of all time. Perhaps John Wayne's finest performance.
Very close
I do agree. However, John Wayne´s performance in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" is also magnificent, particularly the scene when is given a silver watch by his men at the farewell parade.
Great movie, one of my favorites. 😊
I've often wondered whether a trumpeter had any teeth left after galloping and blowing his trumpet at the same time.
Than k you ever so much for sharing this AWSOME movie with John Wayne and Henry Fonda and Shirley Temple ❤❤❤❤❤
great movie....
Large cast of Great actors ❤❤❤❤❤
Victor was his usual funny self.😅
One of my fav all time western / Indian vs cowboys movie 🍿 😮😢 never get tired of watching 😮😢
Sitting here watching this movie on Grit TV, and saw clip on u tube !!!
A thinly disguised version of Custer and the Little Bighorn.
Philadelphia Thursday aka Shirley Temple, aka Shirley Temple-Black
This is one of my favorite John Wayne movie. It may be the only movie where someone else gets to push him around. Thank you Henry Fonda.
Henry Fonda and John Wayne would reunite for IN HARM'S WAY. Again, Fonda plays Wayne's superior.
Did you know John Wayne always made a point to play Union cavalry officer, which explains why the yanks always won.
FORT APACHE.
THE HORSE SOLDIERS.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST.
RIO GRANDE.
RIO LOBO.
SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON.
THE UNDEFEATED.
Wayne played a retired confederate in both The Searchers and El Dorado
Also I'm sure you meant "How the west was won" and not "Once upon a time in the West"
@@travisdiehl5350 Dang, good catch!
@@travisdiehl5350I never knew El Dorado was based around the Civil War era. I knew Rio Bravo wasn’t and it was a remake of that movie
@@matthewnikitas8905 There were at least 3 with the same basic plot.
in one - _Rio Bravo_ - he stars with Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson
In another - _El Dorado_ - it's Robert Mitchem and James Caan
In - _Rio Lobo_ - it has a similar plot but is substantially different than the first two.
.
@@BobSmith-dk8nw I know that but I didn’t know Rio Bravo was based in the Civil War era
As them critters got nearer I was blowing my own Bugle! They lost men ridiculously in that chase, they wern't Brave they were stupid, or, perhaps, badly portraid by Hollywood?
