Hahaha, at this point I think people are used to it, I've been living in Iceland for only 3 years and have seen 2 Eruptions near where I live, and enough Earthquakes to make me get over the fear of a building I'm in collapsing.
@@lawsen3719 Those are the most unruly three years out of..... 800 years in that area. And if you look at the depth from where the magma comes from in those two eruptions, you are looking at 6000 years since the last time.
Not to scare anyone, but I don´t think there is any reason to get used to this, since it is highly unusual!
@@asbisi I think there's more frequent eruptions under the water, but also, besides these last 2 eruptions there was another in 2010 which stopped many of the major airlines' flights.

A friend of mine explained the Elf belief this way: "Did you put cookies out for Santa after you knew Santa didn't exist? It's like that here. We commune with the elves because it's an Icelandic thing to do."
They will not flat out say there are no elves, like you'd say there really is no Santa. On road building like he says.

Thanks for this video. Being an Icelander I'm pleasantly surprised that your assertions correlate closely to my experience of my nation. But I still lean towards the idea that beliefs in ghosts and huldufólk is more common and respected than you imply. My grandmother used to see and interact with these hidden people (which are not elves in my opinion). However, no-one believes in trolls in Iceland, except for the children, because the Icelandic Santas are trolls. Strong religious adherence or fanaticism is very rare in Iceland, compared most other countries, but the religiosity numbers are probably (as you said) a communal thing. Most Icelandic atheists I know have no problems with the idea of having a Christian funeral. And by the way, the story of the big huldufólk rocks affecting layout of roads is much older than the era of modern tourism.

If you don't mind my asking, do you have some sense of the adoption of things like astrology, tarot, some loose construction of karma and the like there? Are these even things there?
I ask because, here in the States, as religiosity has fallen, adoption of these informal supernatural beliefs has risen. I wonder if there is a similar phenomenon in Iceland or not?
@@rainbowkrampus I think your observation is correct. I think humans have a natural need for a metaphysical understanding of sorts, and when religion doesn't lead the way we find our symbols in folklore, mythology, "new-age" thinking etc. When I was in my teens and twenties, in Iceland, I definitely found the interest in Tarot and astrology to be very strong, much stronger than any formal religion I knew of. I certainly had a lot of fun with those. Of course an Indian philosophical concept such as Karma was just a part of daily conversations, as it is still today.

I've seen this is a measure applied across several different religions. Or the step up to Holiday believers. It's a bane for synagogues to try to have a place big enough for the High Holyday crowd and intimate enough for Shabbat (non)crowd. Much less trying to deal with the unaffiliated who want to have weddings and bar mitsvahs without ever joining a community.

Why should I look at the writings of your religion? I have never seen any evidence for any god. The superstitious writing presented by followers of the religions are always the kind of bunk that make me wonder how anyone with half a brain can presume there is any truth in them.

Ok, I can't speak for Iceland but I know why baptism is still a big thing in Sweden.
It has nothing to do with the intended acceptance of Jesus aspect, it is because baptism is commonly and mitakenly perceived as a naming ceremony. It's evidenced by the Swedish word "Döpa" ("To name" as well as "To baptise") commonly being used to describe naming people, pets and inanimate objects like boats.

Yes it’s the same in English. To christen means both to name and to baptize
It's the same in Norway. About 10 % of norwegians visit church on sundays, mostly old people. The rest of the population uses the church for naming babies, weddings and christmas entertainment. We also have a few Jehovas Witnesses, mormons, muslims and some fringe groups, but they are getting smaller too.
Same in Iceland. The icelandic word for baptism, skýra is used more often than the actual word for naming, nefna. If it’s not done inside a church It’s grammatically wrong but it’s so popular that it will most likely cause a change within the Icelandic language. As in baptizing new bars, hotels, boats instead of naming them

I know sociological studies in Poland that basically show that what matters in determining a person's religiosity is 1) the level of religiosity of one's mother, and 2) whether one lives in a city or a country. Father, grandparents, etc. are not statistically significant.
Basically, the change of being non-religious is 1/3 with a religious mother and 2/3 with a non-religious one, some for being religious. However, when controlled for the city of growing up, both values jump to some 80-90% relation (i.e. non-religious mother & raised in a city -> child almost certainly also non-religious, but if mother was religious % they lived in the countryside -> child almost certainly would also grow up to be religious).
Furthermore, your level or religiosity at the age 20-25 basically predicts your religiosity throughout your whole life. Studies from Poland show that you keep the general level of religiosity, and that current 60+ Poles, who are very (VERY) religious, were so already when they were young adults. However, each cohort after them is less and less religious, and is staying on their level of religiosity from when they were 20-25 as well. This is why Poland is one of the fastest secularising societies in the world (according to Pew study a few years back).

I'd be interested to see what correlation there was between baptism of children and beliefs of *living* grandparents. I think a lot of parents go through such rituals under pressure from their own parents.
The situation in Iceland is mirrored in many other European countries. Newer generations don't really care about those rituals, but the still living older generations are still expecting them. Throwing a little pary makes them happy and avoids confrontations, so many opt for that.

In my experience, people like the rituals without necessarily believe in what they originally stand for. This is most seen in families with not so strict traditions. People from strict traditions who don't believe anymore turn away from the rituals, because they stand for oppression.
I hope you’ll eventually do Thailand since I’m from there. Buddhism is very important and is embedded in Newley every aspect of the culture, but it’s practiced very differently than what Buddhism is usually depicted (ex. Thai people worshipping Buddha statues). The belief of the supernatural is very real there. You do such amazing videos and we all learn so much from you!

08:50 I'm from Mexico, Yucatán. My whole family is either catholic or non-affiliated (with different degrees of spiritual beliefs). Point is, my Grandfather has a lot of stories about how "Aluxes", a mayan belief similar to Elfs, used to be relatively common in construction workers daily practices.
From news and some family stories I can tell is still done to a degree. I'm the type that believes on it in a "let's do the ritual just in case" type thing.
It's funny how, even for a modern Western country like Iceland that we could easily find information about online if we tried, most people's perceptions of them are still clouded by rumours, myths and blanket characterizations that have little relationship to reality.
Gnomes are real. Cry about it 🕺🏼
I think it's because the modern internet is a lot more insular than people believe it is.
Algorithms trap people in cycles of engagement, creating smaller communities that are relatively separated from everything else, and cross community interaction is relatively rare unless you have a shared interest with that community.
It's not an inherent part of the internet of course, it's mostly just because of social media algorithms that can be changed at any time
Because it takes effort.

i think it's also bc there's barely 350 000 of Icelanders so a: there's not a big international pressure to go and visit and study them and B: there's not enough population so native Icelanders don't really go around promoting their stuff
From Denmark, I can recognize the tradition of the church very often being used for the ceremonies around life cycle steps (birth/marriage/death), but this does not indicate any real influence. More of a common tradition, like when many have a church visit as part of yuletide (not named similar to "christmas") traditions. Also, the churches are nice buildings, good scenes for such ceremonies. And people do not protest against the weird words from the pulpit. They could also get married at the city hall, but that's more boring places. Church involvement does not mean influence.

Icelanders baptizing their children for social obligations rather than genuine religious practice reminds me:
My brother was born in 1993. Apparently at that time, circumcision was a popular thing to do, regardless of whether you were Jewish or not. After my brother was born, the nurse immediately asked my mother if she wanted him circumcised. She had some very strong words with her that involved threats of legal action if they touched him like that and she backed off. Don’t know if there were any lessons about bodily autonomy learned that day (or at least don’t bring it up before the parents do), but I’m sure that nurse learned not ask my hormonal postpartum mother stupid questions like that.
As a Pagan myself, I want to go to Iceland to visit that temple and talk to the priests and priestesses.

As an Icelander I appreciated this well written and researched content. The percentage of people registered to the "state church" does not at all represent our collective beliefs, because until a decade or two ago Everyone born was automatically registered to that church. Now, you get registered to what your parents (or mother) are registered to (and don't get me started on the general wrongness of having a national registry of peoples' religious affiliations, but that's another discussion). Unsurprisingly, then, older people tend to belong to the state church, regardless of their beliefs. My grandmother, who passed away aged 95 a few years ago, would say: "well, I might not believe in a god, I just want to believe in something good out there".

I was baptized not because my parents were believers, but because it was something that all people did and not doing it could cause friction in the family and later being an issue if you wanted to go to a private school run by the Church. I was even an altar boy for a couple of years, even though I never believed.

This also begs a question about the role of religion/church in given countries. As an American, I was astonished to hear that the church in Switzerland is responsible for a lot of their social programs, and the church tax was related to that. In the US, churches treat that as primarily the government’s responsibility, and we could not imagine funding churches through government taxes. I find this so mind blowing.

I would speak for me personally - also most of my friends.
None of us is really religious. That is, i am still a member of the church .. but more because i am too lazy to go through the process of cancelling. I never visit the church service - quite simply because i do not believe in God. (Frankly .. from descriptions in the Bible, i actually find the Devil a great deal more engaging ... not the stupid satanic cult but the actual description of old Testament Morningstar/Lucifer - the opposite of the choleric, vengeful God .. the guy that wanted to bless humans with insight .. while God only wants humans docile and dumb)
I do not believe in the Huldufólk .. but i enjoy thinking that they might be there. With that said, i DO believe in Nature as a greater power - in a way that we are but guests on earth and should treat Earth accordingly. (for that matter, i gladly also believe in the idea of nature beings/spirits - but i dont worship them) .. Believe in Elves is a quaint tradition .. also practical because it can be a good reason to reject building projects and nature exploitation by making sure that "the little folk is not disturbed..".
So all in all, my friends and i are pretty much atheists with a love of nature. We enjoy some aspects of spirits and Nature .. but more in a practical way (what you can feel and touch).
When pressed about it, i will much rather believe in the little people than in God though - because they represent a natural harmony .. something real.

I am 30 now in South-Eastern Ontario (Loyalist [from the U.S. revolutionary war] & Tyendinaga & Belleville Townships), much of my family & friends and the associated/extended families of ours have kids baptised - but largely never perform or associate themselves with any further religious gatherings publicly or practices privately apart from perhaps funerals/burials & weddings. It will be interesting to see how these trends progress as the 60-30-10 split is a good approximation for Christian - non-religious - Other Religions across Canada and across Iceland that I now see.

I am a Unitarian Universalist and I was reading a book about the history of the movement in Canada not too long ago and it mentioned that by the early 1900's the Icelandic Lutheran Church was pretty liberal compared to the others and when communities of immigrants from the island settled in Manitoba some of them ended up converting to Unitarianism because of the lack of acceptance from the other Lutheran churches but they eventually fully assimilated.
Growing up Catholic in Mexico (which is still a very religious place compared to most of Europe for example) I remember that although almost everyone I knew was Catholic in some form not all of them necessarily went to church often and my impression is that alot of the people converting to the Evangelical or Pentecostal churches are the type of folks who take the whole religion thing quite seriously (like I did in college and after moving to the US) but the Church remains pretty influential there in more direct ways.

As if you don’t have enough videos on your plate, I’d be interested in one on Norway. My wife’s parents were from Norway and I see some similarities. However, Norway removed the Church of Norway as the official State church in 2012, though the state still sends funds to the Church of Norway (including to other churches). The number of members has been slowly decreasing, but it seems to still have a social importance in the community and is running strong. I was in northern Norway with my wife visiting her family a few years back and the church was used more of a social gathering place; including sleepovers in the main chapel! So I asked a family member and they identified as atheist but still occasionally attends services.
But even for this atheist, we will be traveling back there in a couple of years because the church in the small community her father’s family came from will be celebrating 200 years since the building was built. Why? I find religion fascinating and appreciate the historical significance these had in remote fishing villages.
Exactly. That’s what churches should be. There’s no reason why people need to believe rubbish to still have the community which churches provide.

It could be also added that number of Catholics is rising in Iceland, getting close to 4% of residents. They are mostly not native Icelanders but Polish and other immigrants. For example, the bishop of Reykjavik is Slovak.

On the subject of elves in Iceland, I think it would be interesting if someone did a comparative study of the likelihood that elves are discussed as "possible" within Iceland with other countries with similar folk traditions. How likely are Irish people to say that faeries are "possible"? How likely would a random Ukrainian be to say it's possible that Domovoi or Leshies exist? Attaching a positive belief to someone saying something of a religious nature is possible when asked directly is already kind of weird, as that's something people are sort of primed to do anyway due to the social baggage around religion. By this standard, Bart Ehrman's status as an "agnostic atheist" who isn't willing to say he *knows* God doesn't exist would label him a theist. It seems even stranger that this would be taken as something unique to a particular area without any sort of comparison being done though. Other regions have folk beliefs. Is Iceland really especially attached to theirs or is this just a normal thing?

I feel it’s worth noting that in much of Western Europe, religion had already lost its importance by the mid 20th century. In England, even in 1968 only 4% of Anglicans attended church. Similarly, as far back as 1978, Swedish attendance was only 1%.
I say this because many act as though secularization in the US is the same trajectory as abroad, but the time separation suggests they’re contingent on separate cultural trends
