My darling husband died suddenly in April this year. His family are Scottish and he lived there himself for a time. He loved Scotland and was immensely proud of his ancestry. He played this song to me many times and it was one of the songs I had played at his funeral. It's so beautiful and moving and has meanings on many levels... "Oh, but let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time..." ❤
My Grandpa's name is Doug. He passed away the 23rd of this month, 4 days ago. His funeral was yesterday. I was going through his Facebook last night when I found he linked this song, he listened to this a couple days after my grandma (his wife) passed back in 2018. She heard this song for the first time on her way to my grandpa's dad's funeral. She fell in love with it, and my grandpa loved it because she loved it. This isn't the type of music I listen to, but it touches my soul in ways words can't describe.
As an Englishman living in Scotland I don’t mind admitting to welling when I listen to this. It’s perfect; a beautiful love song to a country that makes me wish my blood was blue and white.
I'm Indian and just got back from exploring the Scottish Highlands. I gotta say Caledonia is one of the most beautiful countries I've seen! I might not be Scottish but I'm grateful to have stepped on its soil!
I am Scottish born and have lived in Australia for a long time; Australia has been good to my family and me but my heart will always be Scottish. Oh how I miss the beautiful land of my birth and this song just reminds me of how much my heart longs to go back. I’m elderly now but once COVID is gone I plan for one more trip back home 🏴🇦🇺
Hope you managed that trip, June 😊 I’ve only ever managed one trip back and as soon as I stepped onto the tarmac in Glasgow, I knew I was home! I was overcome with an incredible feeling of belonging. I have a great need to do another trip!
I got a scholarship for a uni in Ireland. I’d never been before and knew no one in the entire country. When I arrived I was nervous to leave Scotland and excited for the future. My parents came with me to help move my stuff and as we were getting coffee before their flight back, leaving me alone in this strange new place, this song came on in the coffee shop. It comforted me and reminded me I was not too far from home. Anytime in the past 3 years I’ve felt sad or homesick, I’ve listened to this to help me get through it. Now, I have been offered a job back home in Scotland. It’s a full circle moment. This song was the first thing I remember about being on my own in Ireland, now as I sit with my empty room all packed up ready for the airport, I listen again. I’m crying with happy memories with friends I hope to keep in touch with. They will get on grand in this great country. But as for me, Caledonia is calling and now I’m coming home!
It’s funny, as an Irish person I hear this song and think of Ireland when I miss it. I feel Ireland and Scotland have an understanding in our history and our cultures, I feel welcome in Scotland and this song speaks to me

I was hearing this song for the first time in 2020 in Dublin in a Pub, being sung by a guy with so much passion that I was in tears because I had to think of my dad who passed away a year ago. This year we went to Scotland for the first time and I (being german) finally completely understand the song. This really is a place to hang you heart on an we already long to return. Thank you for composing this song and thank you unknown musician in the 'Cobblestone' in Dublin for singing the song and putting so much passion in it.
Our music is like that isn't it. I explain to my American friends, Irish music is wonderful melodies, meaningful and full of emotion, and sometimes a history lesson, all wrapped into 3-4 minutes of a song
My mate loved this song. It was played at his funeral, I think of him lots and play this song often to remind me of him and the banter we shared as teenage and early twenties numpties. Rest in Peace ya bampot.
even though i am from Mexico this song gives me the chills, what an amazing nation Scotland is! cheers to every Scottish man or woman reading this in 2017
LYRICS I don't know if you can see the changes that have come over me In these last few days I've been afraid that I might drift away So I've been telling old stories, singing songs That make me think about where I came from And that's the reasons why I seem so far away today Oh and let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home For if I should become a stranger You know that it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had Oh and I have moved and I've kept on moving Proved the points that I needed proving Lost the friends that I needed losing, found others on the way Oh and I have tried and kept on trying Stolen dreams, yes there's no denying I have travelled hard with conscience flying somewhere with the wind Oh and let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home For if I should become a stranger You know that it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had Now I'm sitting here before the fire, the empty room, the forest choir The flames that couldn't get any higher Well they've withered, now they've gone But I'm steady thinking My way is clear and I know what I will do tomorrow When the hands have shaken and the kisses flow, well I will disappear Oh and let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home For if I should become a stranger You know that it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

Although i am from Greece this song gives me quite a feeling every time i hear it, what a beautiful place Scotland is, somehow i have always felt a deep love and drawn for that place and i honestly hope i can visit one day. Greetings to every Scot reading this
My husband passed away on the 10th of February 2022, very suddenly, we live in south Ireland , and we picked caladiona for him, beautiful patriotic song for a true Scotsman 🏴😭
@doreensmith. A Scot, no need to further to define him by gender, that's pride enough. My ancestors had much to be grateful for Scots, primarily an accent even more incomprehensible than their's. If Hibs and Celtic are Scot, so am I.
I'm not Scottish, never been to Scotland, but I grew up in a small town named Caledonia, so the song still speaks to me :) Beautiful song. I hope to visit Scotland some day.
@@Bayfield11it definitely is I have family in Canada and there loads of places named after Scotland because of the highland clearances like Tobermory Nova Scotia etc

I traveled for 3 months throughout the contiguous USA, Europe, and UK. When I heard this song in a pub in Scotland it reminded me of home. I decided to make my way home. I travelled to the other side of the world to learn that where I am supposed to be was on the island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (O’ahu, Hawaii). Much love and Aloha.
I'm Irish and this song hits me right in the heart, the Scots and the Irish people are kindred spirits. Please don't make that statement political or religious.
I’m Scottish, and I feel the same about Phil Colclough’s _”Song for Ireland,”_ especially Mary Black’s version. I live in the US now, and people often ask me if I’m Irish. When I reply, _”Almost. I’m from Scotland”_ they usually apologize, but I tell them not to. The Scots and Irish, I tell them, are in many ways indistinguishable, and, as one of he former, I consider the latter as beloved cousins. It’s easy to see why, when you consider that you can easily replace the word _”Scottish”_ with the word _”Irish”_ in the following and it still works: How many Scottish folk singers does it take to change a light bulb? Five. One to put in the new bulb, and four to sing about how much we miss the old one. 😬
@@bakedutah8411, lovely reply my friend. But I think the definitive version of song for Ireland is by the master of them all, Mr. Luke Kelly. Best wishes from Ireland.
This song is played every year at new year at my local pub on the Isle of Bute and everyone joins arms, and sings together swaying in time, never fails make my heart swell with pride and to bring out the Scottish spirit of every individual regardless if they are from Scotland or not, we include everyone.
When I was a little boy my family visited Scotland as kind of a pilgrimage to see where our ancestors came from . that was over 25 years ago and I haven't been able to get the place out of my heart and mind since .No other place on earth has stuck with me the way Scotland has
@Warrior Son aye cause those very people killed it. To this day they're punishing scottish weans for speaking in a scottish accent, stealing our language wasn't enough for them.
@Warrior Son it is, and a few do but its not really been enough. Usually the people who do speak gaelic learned from family and can only speak it with them, anywhere else if you were to walk up to someone and speak gaelic they wouldn't have a clue what you're saying or what language you're speaking even in Scotland. The government put gaelic translations on road signs but that didnt work. Perhaps they should teach it in schools. Don't think wee nic will take that advice off me though
Aye so much that they are making it that we can't even get the chance to vote...we've not bowed to a master were being whipped into submission...if you can't see it understand that your blind. All rose coloured tinted glassed arses.
im Scottish but maybe we should try a wee bit humility and just let it speak for itself...add to it by doing paintings, songs, inventions but stay humble.
My auntie died around a decade ago, and my grandad passed this year. On my aunties grave, it says “Caledonia, you’ve been calling me, now I’m coming home”. At my grandads funeral, I think my dads cousins or my second cousins wtv- started singing this song. This song is so special to me now. Rest in peace grandad and auntie Hazel. You will forever be missed ❤.
My half Scottish Dad just passed away and I have never been able afford to go see my home land, my celtic bloodline at all, My Dad was Proud of his Scottish Blood. I am all Celtic and maybe a lttle Romanian I just head.. how the Spirit feels sometimes calling me home to a place I have never known.. Love, Freedom
Ok when I can afford it I would very much like to come home and be free from the very reason the English set foot on Native Nations Land, now they have become slaves and us to their ways as to why they even came here omgosh!! Arrrgg!
I went to Scotland with my wife the last week of March 2024. I've have never been in such a charming, heart warming country in my life. I'm not a citizen there but I miss it so much. Part of my soul attached itself to Caledonia and now I'm homesick. Love this song, makes me think of it every time I listen to it. And every time I listen to it I can't help but cry. Thank you for the beautiful heartfelt music.
I have to say this. I am a half-Scot, 74 years old, living in France as a composer/musician. This song has an ethereal quality that is so sincerely endorsed by the hypnotic and peaceful timbre of Dougie’s voice. The arrangement is so perfect. I have listened to it many many times and unfailingly, every time, it brings a tear. For those who understand this effect, you will know that it is totally involuntary! If you get to read this Dougie, thank you for such a beautiful contribution to my music laden world.
I lived in Abu Dhabi for 12 years from the age of 21 - 33. In my last year I went home for holidays and explored with my daughter and wife, we attended two very Scottish weddings and headed back to the desert. We touched back down in Abu Dhabi and the very 1st day back, I turned and told my wife we have to go back home. There was no choice at that point, being away any longer was not an option...We have now been home 3 years and I believe because of my time away I have a huge appreciation for this country we call home, there is something special about Scotland above anywhere else in the world. This song could have been written about me that day I arrived back in Abu Dhabi and because of that this will always be more than just a song to me and my family.
I'm not Scottish, but this is universal, wherever you are from, home and the things and people you love are part of your soul. Thank you Dougie for the gift of this song. Just substitute Caledonia for any place or person that matters most to you.
......no prouder feeling to be half way around the world....hearing this song brings a massive smile to my face......serving six years in the military.....we would sing this on deployments....and the Americans would literally cry and some would say we wish we could love our country as much as you do yours......scotland forever x
Always hits me in the heart .. My late Mum used to sing this, I had Caledonia playing the other day & my 40 Yr old Son walked in shouting this reminds of going into Grannies, I'll take that, keeping her memory alive.. 🥰
Played this at my beloved wifes funeral recently ,she loved it ,Ilove it ,thanks Dougie ,wonderful song .Thanks to our Celtic cousins ,the Scots for their inestimable contribution to mankinds love of song.
I am Scottish and spent a long time in Ecuador... .visited Middle of the World and ventured deep in to the rain forest where I had the privilege of meeting with the Huaorani people. You are a proud nation and there are many similarities..
Caledonia is the ancient name for Scotland. It is the name given us by the Romans 2,000 years ago, given to the whole country as it was the name of the largest tribe who led the fight to drive out the Romans on their three failed invasions of Caledonia. We romantically retain the name in songs and poetry. Beautifully sung!
Selk: I first heard this song sung by a guy with a very harsh and loud voice, then several others had sung it ... absolutely dreadful 😢 THEN one day I was listening to Dougie singing another song (Inside a Day?) and utube followed automatically with this song . . . I nearly turned it off cos I hated the song ... but decided to listen, and I was blown away with his gentleness and passion - I only later found out that HE WROTE IT ‼️
I'm of Italian/Sicilian descent.Someone on my family tree must've married a Celt long before I was born because this song lights up my heart and soul! Thank you,Scotland!❤
I am Polish and absolutely LOVE Dougie's music and songs. You do not need to be Scottish to feel it. THANK you, Dougie, I listen to your songs whenever I am driving in Scotland. This makes me so happy.
I'm an Aussie who met a very talented Scottish musician who was playing in the English pub on a cruise ship in Australia in 2018. He played this song most nights and it has stayed with me always since then. So beautiful 🥰

Best version of this song. Even better than the original record, and that takes some doing. Dougie MacLean gets better and better musically as he gets older. A fantastic ambassador for Scotland and Scottish music
I knew this song well before I left the south of Scotland for Brittany in northern France in 1992. I was so homesick and hearing this song in the bar where I worked one night just broke my heart. Years later I found out that it was written on a beach close to where I was living when Dougie was missing home just like I was. This song will always have a place in my heart.
It brings me to tears every time. I've travelled, currently in Guildford Slurrey for my sins, completely maudlin listening to this. I don't care I'm properly hamesick and missing hame

+Gavin MacNeish ' tis your problem that you hate Americans, a lot of Scots were driven out and settled in America, a Famous Admiral, John Paul Jones, a scot, helped win the revolution here. and if our geneology has it some of our ancestors came from Scotland and Ireland, it was not our doing we were born elsewhere.

I am an American , living here in France now, at age 59....with Irish ancestors, and relatives, too, and the Scottish music touches me so strong, my heart soars when I hear this guy , he just does something special to my soul, so real, so pure, I know that I must have some Scottish ties somewhere in my past lives perhaps, this music speaks to me...so lovely...I wish I could see him perform someday....
in history the Scots are of Irish influence(Scotti tribe) so maybe that is where the feelings come from, but even though, we can let you be an adoptive Scot
My darling wife and I spent our honeymoon in Scotland, and this song takes me right back. What a magical and gorgeous place., amazing people, and fantastic music. Between 2014 to 2016 I went to Australia on a working holiday visa for one year. Finished my 88 regional days and got granted my 2nd year visa. I wanted to stay but unfortunately the company I was working for promised me sponsorship but in the end didn't actually sponsor me just false promises. When I had to get a flight home after 2 years of finding myself and becoming a better person learning new cultures and just being more at peace with myself. I was in Cairns airport and this amazing song came on my RUclips randomly. I just burst out crying as all my emotions came flooding in the middle of the airport. It was just so overwhelming and it related to me so much in that moment. I will always cherish this song of such a sad but also amazing memory of my independence and and finding myself. Gets me every time! 😥

Scotland is here for you anytime, door is always open. Your one of us and always will be.
Maybe you can compose something yourself about your experience.
It’s funny, as an Irish person I hear this song and think of Ireland when I miss it. I feel Ireland and Scotland have an understanding in our history and our cultures, I feel welcome in Scotland and this song speaks to me

I'm very proud of being catalan. But if I were allowed to choose any other nationality, I would choose the Scottish without hesitation. Health and strength, brothers!
Well Hooe you enjoyed our country and hope you come back again 👍
Our music is like that isn't it. I explain to my American friends, Irish music is wonderful melodies, meaningful and full of emotion, and sometimes a history lesson, all wrapped into 3-4 minutes of a song

LYRICS
I don't know if you can see the changes that have come over me
In these last few days I've been afraid that I might drift away
So I've been telling old stories, singing songs
That make me think about where I came from
And that's the reasons why I seem so far away today
Oh and let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home
For if I should become a stranger
You know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had
Oh and I have moved and I've kept on moving
Proved the points that I needed proving
Lost the friends that I needed losing, found others on the way
Oh and I have tried and kept on trying
Stolen dreams, yes there's no denying
I have travelled hard with conscience flying somewhere with the wind
Oh and let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home
For if I should become a stranger
You know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had
Now I'm sitting here before the fire, the empty room, the forest choir
The flames that couldn't get any higher
Well they've withered, now they've gone
But I'm steady thinking
My way is clear and I know what I will do tomorrow
When the hands have shaken and the kisses flow, well I will disappear
Oh and let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home
For if I should become a stranger
You know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had
Thanks, My little girl was looking for the lyrics

I'm Irish and this song hits me right in the heart, the Scots and the Irish people are kindred spirits. Please don't make that statement political or religious.
TIOCFAIDH AR LA!
It’s easy to see why, when you consider that you can easily replace the word _”Scottish”_ with the word _”Irish”_ in the following and it still works:
How many Scottish folk singers does it take to change a light bulb?
Five. One to put in the new bulb, and four to sing about how much we miss the old one.
😬

What a beautiful song. I love Scotland from Argentina.

I listen to it when I'm missing Scotland. Makes me cry everytime.

I may be a teenage boy from California, but I am proud of my Scottish genes so much, I embrace it, I’m moving back to my true homeland once I’m older.
You would be welcome but you may find it a bit cold and grey after California.
Just need to brace yourself for the weather 😅
Eric Henderson oh I’m ready for the weather, always wanted to go to scotland when it snows
WillSpengler indeed
@@dino_man8494 You had better come soon then. Last winter we had no snow at all here, where I live. A little some places which melted away quickly.
35 years ago when my wife and I were first married, this came on Thistle and Shamrock while we were driving in the moonlight, and you've been part of our family ever since.
What a touching song. Had the pleasure to live in Scotland for almost 4 years and the desire to come back gets bigger every day.
As a Scot born and raised, it’s taken me almost 19 years to find this song. One of my best mates played it in his car for me and it gave me a sense of patriotism I thought I’d lost. Such a beautiful song and it made me feel proud of being Scottish again 🏴🏴
I am not scottish, but this song makes me understand your love for your country. Bless the Scots from Galicia ✌😊
