Rare 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘢 sighting September 2024

- While exploring the Tonga Trench at 3,300 meters, we captured footage of the elusive 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘢 squid on our deep-sea lander cameras.
Often called the 'Bigfin squid' or 'Ghost squid,' this creature has incredibly long arms and tentacles, stretching up to 8 meters in length. It's a rare and remarkable sight from the depths, and we're excited to share it with you. Thanks to our partner @inkfishexpeditions for creating this video.

I think they do get very large. This was likely a juvenile. Not like godzilla big....but large enough to make you brown the water lol

Man, I'm so jealous of these scientists and film crews that get to go down into the largely unknown and unexplored deep ocean and see these alien creatures.

It's amazing how lighting makes all the difference, in here it looks fascinating and beautiful, but in that greeny-Xfliles-like vode it just looks plain creepy.
better lighting, intentional biology observation mission vs oil rig, better cameras, better ROVs, better youtube upload rates than 15+ years ago etc. it really all adds up, on basically all the recent magnapinna videos from different missions and organizations.

yea but a totally different vibe of alien than the oil well stalker one. other recent videos are even more ethereal. there’s one especially where a BIG one is engaging in likely predation behavior but it looks like a pure being of light just dancing and twirling its huge ribbons around
Errrr, excuse me for being thick but, if it survives at such scary depths why is it casting a shadow on the sea floor? I thought that sunlight couldn’t penetrate down that far. Just asking!
