I worked Derricks on WesTex rig 16 in the early 1980s. We ran 9 stands of six-inch collars and up to 6500 feet of four-inch drill stem. The Derrick was a 97 foot Lee C. Moore, and we had a Brewster N-4 draw works. I got promoted to derricks about 2 weeks after I cracked out in the oil patch when we were tripping out of the hole and all of a sudden a marijuana pipe hit the ground by the driller, it came from above, and all of us looked up. The driller motioned for him to come down, and told him to go said at the edge of the location until our tour was up, he fired him and took him home. On the 1st few trips, it amazed me how far side to side the Derek would move when we were tripping out, when you got back down on solid ground, it felt like the ground was moving kinda like sea legs I guess. But working collars ate my lunch the 1st few times, till I learned to take an extra wrap, and when we did a drill stem test maybe 3 or 4 wraps if they had live oil on them. I remember one time down around big Springs we had done a DST and live oil was all over everything, the company man was smoking a cigarette and our toolpusher was running the brakehandle, the toolpusher grab that cigarette out of the company man's mouth, I was up in the Derrick watching all this, crushed the cherry in his bare hand, and started screaming at the company man. Not only could I see it from 65 feet up in the air but I could hear it also. I never did have to use the Geronimo line, but I did have it untied that day. We never shut down for weather, I saw my 1st tornado northeast of Snyder Texas, we lacked 2 stands of collars being out of the hole for a bit change and I saw a pale white tornado come out of the clouds and wiggled around till it touched the ground and it instantly turned dark red from the dirt getting sucked up. I got into my Derrick climber and did a freefall till I got to the drill floor. The driller said what the folk are you doing? I told him there's a tornado, I'm going to the bit room. It missed us by about a mile. I guess if you're still reading this, I appreciate your patience. I got to work with some of the finest men I've ever known, and some of the sorriest some beaches I've known also. I left the old patch with some wonderful memories of my youth, and a cigar box full of rattlesnake rattles, and all my fingers.

Yeah that block is the smallest block I've seen. It's only a little 2 stander. I've always been on tripples and 5 inch drill pipe. 8 inch collars plus 4 stands of heavyweights. I'm an Australian from the west coast and I was in the patch in the 80s and 90s when men were made of steel and derricks were made of wood, haha good old days. Worked with my 3 brothers all of us on the same rig. We had that rig singing. Bit changes in 10 hours from 4800 metres. Safety men did nothing it was the cowboy days. We all knew our jobs well. Throwing 7 wraps of chain tripping into the hole. Big rigs, 900,000 lb rated Derrick, made by National I think. 👍🇭🇲

Is he riding the rail or just leaning. I mean, I leaned on the rail all the time. Even on the ground. Lol

Lots of haters. Yes you are all faster than this guy lol. He did alright. Looks a little nervous grabbing the rails all the time. Safety line is on wrong. I had a driller run in 5th gear. I missed a few but it was fun as hell! Had to grab the rail the way he was running in lol. I actually found it easier when he was going faster too. I hate when the driller starts to slow down when the blocks get to you. It throws my timing off.

That's not a derrick hand if the block's gotta be stopped. I worked derricks jack knife and standard 2" to 10 3/4" monel drill collars. The block does need to stopped however for the drill collars. If I worked the derrick like that I wouldn't be up there more than a few minutes before the driller took me down.
