Great memories of Burton Joyce, Nelson Field. Putting a stick float through back in the 80's & 90's fishing the Nationals. Coming from the south it was always a great joy to know if your Match would be on the Trent. Catching Bottle top skimmers, Roach, dace and chub. Getting through 4 pints of Hemp and 4 Pints of Caster, little and often. Back then it was 1.1Lb Bayer Perlon Bottoms and 20 fine wire hooks. Pete Drennan stick floats, 5 No4's. Feeder was always for the Bonus fish. Great to see how River fishing has developed over the years.

Back in the day it was a gallon of yellow or bronze maggots, 13' float rod and a decent sized stick float to get into the current.

Proper fishing. My old river. Never fished a feeder back then, it was considered lazy fishing. 4lb main line, 2.6lb hook length and stick float trickle feed little and often. Plus we never sat on our arse's for a match. Lovely video tho. Can't stand those bloody commercial lakes cramped with fish, kiddies pool I call them. Do more river video's pse and visit the Swale if you can for one. Awesome river.

I fished it for the first time in a Charity Match the other week. I pulled out peg 27 and didn't realise it but people told me I'd drew the famous flyer. There was gale force winds so it was a hard match won with 9lb of Dace and a Bream. I came 5th with 3lb2oz made up of a 2lb 3oz Perch and a handful of Dace. The biggest problem for me was all the silkweed. It didn't matter where I cast, halfway across the river or not, every cast I came back with a clump of weed. I also lost two bonus fish which I was a bit gutted about. Enjoyable day though, a mans river, very different to my local middle Severn.

We of a certain age remember the mighty Trent in all its glory fishing what are now considered 'classic' methods. I would often be going to shool after the weekend with bright orange hands due to feeding a gallon of bronze maggots....every Monday the tutor teacher would say ' You've been fishing again Kevin'...great days.
