  • First Ride: BMW C400X 4K
    It was time for my R1250GS's annual check up at the dealer, and October in the UK is not known for it's fine riding conditions. Nevertheless, I was asked if I'd like to wait or take something for a ride. They had nearly everything available, (no S1000RR nor C650GT) and as I've ridden most of the BMW offerings in the past, I thought I'd try something new.
    This is my video riding a scooter for the first time in years. The BMW C400X is their smaller scooter, a 350cc, water cooled single, pushing out a massive 34bhp! This is transferred to the small-ish wheels through a CVT gearbox. Though it doesn't feel it, it's also rather heavy, tipping the scales at a fairly significant 204kg.
    Did I enjoy it? Oh yes. Quite a lot! Not sure I'd have one, but with a few hours to kill while my GS was being serviced, I had a blast. Though not as cheap as many scooters, compared to the Japanese 400 cc 'adventure bike style' scooter, it's a bargain.

    Good and fair review. I have the C400GT version which has a larger screen and generally looks better (my opinion). I use it for gentle touring and ride out's all over the Peak District and beyond. I can no longer ride bikes (physical restrictions after replacement knees) and find that the BWM is fast enough, very smooth and economical at around 80 miles per gallon. The down sides for the a bike called a GT is that the storage is limited (for a scooter) and you do need a higher screen. I'm 5'9'' and have fitted a screen extender to avoid buffeting. generally a great bike to ride.

      Thanks Ian, my GS is due another service so perhaps I’ll try a GT next time. That is if I can get anyone from Vertu Motorrad in Rotherham to respond to my request for a service… I suspect I’ll be heading over to the west of the Pennines again at this rate.

    Great review, very well narrated. Nice to see a 'motorebike' owner selecting a scooter to test ride.

      When I want more cover, I’ll take the car

    £8000 in my dealer. I think the adv 350 honda is better. Has adjustable screen, more storage and quality forks.

    Nice to see a scooter test. I like all forms of two wheel transport and also like the xadv Honda but it’s quite expensive being only a couple of grand less than a new Africa twin👍

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  2 года назад +1

      Hi Adrian, thanks, it wasn't the most likely choice! I had a look at an X-ADV after I'd done this video, and yes, they are expensive. Perhaps too expensive for what they are. I also think scooters are better as city transport with the ability to go further if required. For off-road, I'm sure the X-ADV has some capability, but the small wheels on the C400X meant I felt rough roads a lot more, so comparing to a 21" trail bike, the X-ADV looks like an expensive option which doesn't really do the ADV bit of the name.

    That was one good review and even better on a wet road, answers some of the real life questions for us older bikers who unfortunately must consider trading down.

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  Год назад

      It’s not trading down 😉. One of the most fun bikes I’ve ridden in the last year was the 19hp RE 350 Meteor. The two bikes that get ridden the least in my garage are 1000cc/130hp+. The ones that get ridden the most are under 40hp. It’s just a different sort of riding.

      @@PeakMotorcycles The Honda Forza 750 looks cracking, but I think Honda have missed a trick by not putting all the heated kit on it that BMW have, also, another glaring omission from Honda is the lack of cruise control 🤦🏻‍♂️

    The engine is a rubber damped 350cc single, despite being named a 400. I’ve been looking at a preowned 2019 C400x here in the States. I have issues with right hand numbness due to a bulging disc in my back. Seems like the riding position of scooters don’t aggravate my condition like proper bikes do, so I’m sort of stuck with a scooter at the moment. I’m sure I’ll eventually find a bike that doesn’t bother my hand but I’m not sure what bike that would be.

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  2 года назад +1

      I noticed the 350/400 thing after, so put it in the comments. It is quite a different riding position, and now I’m interested in trying a few more. Good luck with finding a bike that works for you.

      You might be same as myself - stuck with scooters for ages but someone pointed out the 'new' brands of bikes with feet forward ( RE Meteor 350 & Bellini 502c ) and wow, say bye-bye to the scooter!!

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  2 года назад +2

      @@drdoolittle5724 awesome! I think bikes have been getting bigger and faster, and while that has a thrill, on real roads and real life, you can’t really use it. Riding a slow (not that any of these are really slow!) bike fast is more fun than riding a fast bike slow. I’m swapping my 143bhp CB1000R for a 55bhp CCM Spitfire Six and I can’t wait 🤣

    Thanks Andre. Would the pillion seat get heated as well do you think? I ride my wife’s 125 scooter and I love the low weight and I’m always laughing on it. Brakes are amazing and there is something about not having to change gear. I have a Ktm duke 790 as well so good to get a completely different ride.

      Hi, I’m sorry but I don’t know. I had a quick look on the internet and couldn’t find anything conclusive. Even other test rides don’t mention it. If you call your local dealer, I expect they could confirm. Apologies.

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  Год назад

      Not sure, you’d have to check the specs. Perhaps a different tyre pattern and headlamp configuration? Visual preference is of course down to each person and I prefer the X, but then it would be dull if we all liked the same thing 😉

      I think inside leg is more important than height, but at 1m90 it’s more a question of if it’s too small for you! I expect it would be fine though. I’m 1m85 with a 32” inside leg.
