Some good points but these numbers are way too low..like some comments mentioned, quants can start at ~250k at places like 2sig and citadel. There are plenty of other quant hedge funds that pay well.

I think most of my classmates do not really think they could make a million dollars(even for HKD) upon graduation, but still, I find this video really helpful for a second-year college student. Somehow I haven't figured out which way to choose, to study for a master degree in computer science, or to get a master degree in financial engineering. Btw Baruch is quite attractive to me but maybe CMU works better if I wanted to get a job at Hong Kong or Shanghai.

Question: as someone who's been in the industry for sometime now, what school would you recommend someone to get their MFE (or similar) from between UC Berkeley, Princeton, Columbia and Baruch? Let's just consider long-term success in the industry and professional network while ignoring the investment cost. Also, how does one become a top quant? I know you mentioned continuous learning but any specifics on pertinent skills necessary to excel in the quant world today?

I like this video because I think being critical on protentional earnings is a lot better compared to exaggerating salaries. I would say this is one of the few fields that having a PhD really matters and directly effects your pay. Most of the lower salaries are people who flexed into the position or just have a master degree.

I like your other videos, but I really disagree on this one. I have a buddy who got his M.S. in Applied Math with a focus in Quant Finance and then got a job offer at Morgan Stanley. They asked him how much he wanted to be paid annually and he said “$200,000.” Their response was “we’ll pay you $250,000.” I got my MSFE from a top school and walked out with a similar salary at a different firm. Then again, this video was made before the U.S. saw inflation almost go into double digits

For quant funds...they typically use stats arbitrage and financial theory to find miss pricing. Gann's are more technical analysis and less math and theory. Some of my favorite quant textbooks are:
      1) Stochastic Calculus for Finance 1/Stochastic Calculus for Finance 2 by Steven Shreve (math)
      2) Introductory Econometric A Modern Approach 5th Edition by Wooldridge (Econometrics)

I have mixed feelings about the CQF. Paul Wilmott is very bright and well respected in financial engineering. I am sure the classes are of great quality however 6 months is not long enough to really learn enough to be comparable to a 2 year masters. If someone is already working in a fairly quantitative area of finance the CQF could be a great option to bring you to the next level. As for an undergrad student, grad student, or non-quant I feel you really need a 2 year masters in financial engineering.

Hey dimitri im new to the quant world and was wondering what the difference between a quant analyst and trader and would an analyst be promoted to a trader (sorry if it sounds stupid)

    • @DimitriBianco
      @DimitriBianco  6 лет назад +2

That's actually a really good question. Traditional traders are usually the people who make decisions on buying and selling assets based on tools provided by the analytics teams. For many large quant funds, quant traders are the people who monitor the computers which are trading. A quant analyst is someone who does hands on analytical work such as stats and math to build tools and come up with trading strategies. Depending on the company it is possible to move from being an analyst to being a trader. Large banks like Citi have rotation programs where you learn a lot about the different areas of sales and trading. At the end of the rotations you'll be assigned a specific area which could be a trader.

Two Sigma is a great company and does pay more than most however it should be noted that these jobs are difficult to get and they only have 1,200 employees. There are higher end firms that have great pay however many students think this pay is common, and it's not. Even with a degree from CMU or Columbia doesn't guarantee students a good job. I realized I would prefer to do quantitative finance so I went back for a Masters however I only applied to top universities. The school's reputation was what really helped me to land my first job.
In your case, taking a similar path could be a career boost. I would get a masters in something that interests you but make sure the school's name is well recognized. As for the legal issues, I would try not to worry about them too much. There isn't anything you can do about it now and there are companies who don't check or just don't care. When I worked at a startup we actually hire two guys who came from prison (with worse issues than yours). One of them was my best employee and I was glad the company gave him a shot.

I get that this video is 5yrs old, but as someone who works in chicago prop trading, your numbers are way off.
The average quant makes about half a mill per year here. Note I said “average”.

The data from top quant programs disagree.

@@DimitriBianco I will compromise with you and say that the reason total comps have been so high in chicago prop trading in recent years is because of the crazy vol moves we’ve seen since the 2020 pandemic. Our performance is almost linearly a function of volatility+volume.
Most traders and quants that I know across chicago prop have been making $500k, but yes, about $350k of that is bonus, and if the vol goes away, total comp could drift back down to $250k-$300k.

@@DimitriBianco also, no disrespect, but “top quant programs” won’t have the same transparency in data as a quant who literally works at a top tier prop trading firm, and has a decade of experience working in the industry. If you have a channel like this, you should befriend a few actual quants and get the numbers directly from them.

I dont want so seem arugant or anything, and i respect every course out there. But you should also base your salary on your intellectual effort and of usefull it is your background. I have a BA in physics and i can pretty much do anything that a finance student or an economics student can. Its just a reallity that some courses are just on another level and so are the people that studied them. When i look to the work rate and intellectual capability of some guy comming from accounting i can only laugh inside my head. The work he produces in 5 h i could make it in 1 and maybe better. Again, i respect all courses and every single one has its role. But an MBA eraning more thatn a quant? It´s an isult.

Shrug that's not how markets work. If you could convince mathematicians and physicists to stop transferring to quant finance that might help lol.
