- In "Lawn Mower Detectives Torque Takedown" the detectives pay local hack mechanic, Gordy, a visit due to reports of him not using a torque wrench properly. After the intro and before the conclusion, Taryl goes over this 1959 Military Engine he picked up back at the Vintage Farm & Tractor show. The seller told him all you have to do is drop the fuel line in some gas and it'll run. But will it? Was Taryl lied to? Check it out here to see if this thing will even run. And as always... There's Your Dinner!! Woooo!!

i turn deck off it run fine and ride around but it wont mower grass
i check deck to see if any tension in there and was nothing n it turn freeways
i cant tell what causing it
No I am not a scammer I like watching terrible fixes at all
Taryl, paint a cordless drill Army Green and put in a holster on the mini bike to use as a starter instead of the pull rope. Cool looking engine can't wait for the mini bike video.
That would be right up his alley
Thats a perfect idea
Make the drill patterned like a 1911 for added effect!!
That would be really cool
@@backwoodsvapes139 heck yeah
Taryl, I loved seeing this one and the one that Mustie has. I currently work for Continental and it is really cool to see something historical from our company. We only make General Aviation engines now, but we are still cranking them out.
I'm building something pretty wild with a 2a016, - 2-cylinder version of this motor. Too bad there isn't any kind of support for these engines anywhere. Saturn Surplus over in Pennsylvania has a whole bunch of parts but due to illness, he is shutting down the company and there hasn't been anyone willing to buy him out to carry on with parts sales. He still has many brand new 2 and 4-cylinder continental military engines for sale.
We had an engine like that in Indian country Viet-Nam. We had the starting rope tied to a Jeep wheel that had a tire on it. The rope wound about eight feet of cord around the starting pulley . We ran the cord up over the shower rafter on another wheel with no tire. (the pump fed water to the shower hot water heater, a barrel with a toilet float and valve over a fire,) and dropped it when it was time to start it. We also sprayed ether (from the first aid tent) as starting fluid. Worked every time. Our engine had a raised fuel tank bolted to it. It was a gravity fed system.
thats awesome!
Vietnam is not in India
@@Amberlynn_Reid I am sorry that you are not more knowledgeable on military terminology. "Indian Country," when said by a military combatant means the area out side the gate of the military compound. Where that area is populated by the enemy. This term was developed right after the civil war in the west where the US Army virtually had the Indians right at the gate. The term has been in use every sense.
I have seen these old engines used to pump fuel to aircraft, water to laundry units, water to camp kitchen units. Basically anything a GI could think up.
Back in the day worked on MANY of those engines.I could teach him a thing or two about it
@@davidchisenhall5001 what could you teach him about that engine that he doesn't know already
That is an awesome engine. All alutimin, light, I like the way the engines encased so things can’t clog or get caught on air vanes and parts. Alot of engineering went into that to keep it from overheat, and set in a way that it will start in rain, snow, desert, just about any remote place in the world. I didnt read all the comments but theres some neat ones from veterans that remembered them and used them anyway possible. Really is a cool engine. 👍🏼😎
Taryl. You have brought memories of wind and pull with no start aggravation mowing the lawn when I was a kid.
I built my first mini bike using a Briggs and Scratton 3hp engine and used a Tecumseh H35 carb. on it with a home made intake manifold made from brass sheet and copper tubing. It has a top speed of 18 mph with a 73 year old man riding it.
Super cool!!
the heavy sweating was priceless. Thanks guys
Very impressed!!! the first time I’ve ever heard an American say Aluminium correctly, you could be an honouree Brit! Great video
Fascinating look into an old engine. I thought that oil dip stick was gonna blow out at the end 😇
Watching Taryl work on a small engine is like watching Yuja Wang work on a Steinway. Pure Perfection!
Thank goodness for the Lawn Mower Detectives keeping us safe from punk Grass Rats. That old engine should make for a haulin' doodle bug!
Hello Taryl, I've been subscribed to your channel about 2 weeks now and I'm trying to watch all your videos, I have to say I'm very entertained. The old engines built back then were tough, I wonder if my Honda self propelled mower will be running 55 years from now, I won't be around, but I'm thinking it won't either. Keep em coming Taryl
I have owned one of the first Honda mowers that were exported to the United States. It never stopped running , and in Seattle, it always started on first pull!
I bet you my old Sears Suburban of 1969 is still running strong!
@@CompetentSalesUSA my point exactly, things built back then were made of better materials and built with pride, thus lasting longer. Today's assembly lines don't have any pride.
@@MrCountrycuz it probably will
i have a 1953 dodge purrs like kitten-- 70 + yrs old new points -- new rings
That motor sounded pretty sweet the first time you tuned it. Quiet and smooth. Nice item.
Thanks
I liked your lawn mower detective skit. I would like that fuel idea on: generator, concrete or mortar mixer, and pressure washer. It would not work on a plate compactor.
I'd like to see Taryl get the 4 cylinder version and mount it on something. Same bore and stroke. Rated 6 hp, but the carbs were undersize to limit them. Bigger carb to derestrict it and you'd have a heck of a go kart engine.
Looking forward to the minibike build. Another funny skit, keep them coming.😂😂
Today I bought another N.O.S. (new old stock) in the box 1 cylinder military standard engine like Taryl's. Todays buy was made in the 80's and has electronic ignition. Have one that I demilitarized - no governor and a mikuni style carb for my minibike.
I worked on these continentals and jw Hollingsworth engines in the Army. They powered anything from air compressors, tank pump units, generators ac and dc and Herman Nelson heaters. Most reliable engines ever made. Just a pain to crank up.
I got a question for you, Dave. On the electronic ignition versions of these is the part under the flywheel that looks like a magneto with no sparkplug wires but a red and a white 16ga wires coming out of it. Is it some sort of generator and if so, what is the voltage? I am making a distributor with mechanical advance replacing the governor and if that is an adequate generator I won't have to mount one on the engine.
@@gregpanek523 everything we had was breaker point ignition. Bear in mind all of our equipment was Korean War/Vietnam era stuff. This was in the late 70’s early 80’s.
@@davehart2804 I am doing major modifications to mine, got it coupled with a Royal Enfield transmission. Removed all the shrouding, cut the fins off the flywheel and cleaned it up on the lathe. You wouldn't recognise the engine. it is small without the shrouding and a very nice looking engine. I am working on a point style governor with a custom shaft with the governor itself removed. the top of the governor housing cut smooth and the mechanical advance from a electronic 440 Chrysler distributor on a new custom made shaft. The reluctor cut down to just 2 opposit cylinders and a GM HEI control modual with a Toyota -2 sparkplug coil. The big block Chrysler turns counter clockwise as does the 2a016 governor so the advance works the right direction. (Small block Chrysler turns clockwise). In theory. it should gain quite a bit of power at higher RPM with more advance. I just have to figure out how much advance the engine likes. Luckily Mancini racing sells tunable advance kits for these. I also will be running dual NOS old skool made in Toledo, Ohio Tillotson carburators. and dual exhaust. I am flying in uncharted territory here so there's trial and error. It's all going on a custom 1950 Harley S125 (aka Harley Hummer) frame. It should move right along with the engine mods, Royal Enfield 4 speed trans and Royal Enfield 19" rear wheel.I need some sort of 12 volt generating system and a battery for the lights and ignition. I will have to do some testing on whatever that unit does under the flywheel. it is magnitized all the way around with what looks like a magneto with no spark plug wire provision, just a red and a white 16 ga wires. There is vertually no hotrodding videos on these engines. There was a guy putting a turbo on one, even put an oil pump on it, but after 3 or 4 videos he never finished it. I'm taking photos as I go and will put together a video of how I did it all with pictures and a running and riding video when I'm done maybe late winter or early spring. Since I'm in Georgia, making motorcycle videos in winter is a non issue.I don't want to do a couple of cliffhanger videos like everyone else that never gets remotely finished, so I am doing it all in one video, at least the engine complete and running with it on the bike or have one video with the engine done and running, one putting the bike together and one taking it for a ride... maybe a couple taking it for a ride. IDK, I'm 70 years old, let's see how it goes.
Tell the Human Shop Rag that he needs to at least make a cameo appearance every so often. I still think the skit where Elk Skins turned into the Villain Human Shop Rag was possibly the funniest one made.
Thanks for the bumper sticker Taryl. It's on my car! Minutes before work. MN. really proud. So anyway...
I have one Too! its still on the shipping board mount from Continental Teledyne made in Dec of 86.Reread your tag as mine says it's a 8 cid engine not 3!
I cracked up at the orange B&S engine. From a Montgomery Ward Gilson-made tiller, no doubt. I worked at Wards in the garden shop in the mid 70's. I started at a lot of orange equipment...
Always entertaining! I’ve been a subscriber for years and look forward to the new episode every week. Keep up the good work.
Hilarious with the "sweat" rolling down his face !! Great job.
Thank god for lawnmower detectives. What would we do without them. This is already a good video!
Love me some Lawn Mower Detectives. My boys always head bang to the theme song.
We used them for a number of things. Mostly pumps and generators. Saw one grenade. Blew shrapnel all over the place. And for sure, they do vibrate like crazy. If you're going to put it on a bike, rubber shock mounts are a must.
Taryl, I have been watching your channel for a while and you have extensive knowledge about small engine and all kinds of gas powered tools. If you were going to build a Frankenstein riding mower, what parts would you use to make it? Which engine, carburetor, charging system(stador or generator), steering linkage, front end, shifting linkage, transaxle, mowing deck, spindles and anything that I may have missed? It would be interesting to see what you would choose for the best of the best on a mower.
Mine also has a toggle switch shut off and a priming lever on the fuel pump,2 upgrades yours doesn't have. Will be a sweet mini bike motor!!
Very cool old engine! Just got done watching Mustie1’s weekly video.
Very cool engine. As a kid in the 80s, I would have loved to have a "military engine" on my minibike!
That’s a cool little motor you got a hold with probably a lot of history behind it. Can’t wait to see what you guys do with it. Great vlog…👍👍
Love Ya Tarl you keep me from boredom and show me stuff i don't know thank you.
I had a pipeline welder that was run by a 1956 military engine, it ran great, ,I had it for 25 years and when I sold it was still running.
Y’all should try to get ur hands on a Yanmar L-Series Diesel engine to play with.
We used to have one on a DC generator. It ran 2 600 watt airplane landing lights for fishing. We had a 5 gal can gravity fed to it. After our dad had a stroke it would sit for several years. Then when I got a little older. I would start it and run it for a while. Took it fishing a couple times. As long a we ran it out of fuel the next time I started it it would start in1-3 pulls.
Yay! Lawn Mower Detectives is my favorite show!!
Back in the day we had an electric motor on a curved base that you put a belt on to the non recoil starters to turn them over for starting worked wonders for testing after repairs
That engine is a military standard engine. They are underrated in horsepower, but are very reliable, and durable.
That model is a 1A08 (8 cubic inches). I have several 2A016 engines (16 cubic inches). One powers a home-made log splitter. The 2A016 engines are 2 cylinder, but same bore and stroke. They also had 4 cylinder engines. Lotsa guys get the 2A016 and power go carts with 'em. Some parts are still available thru Saturn Surplus, who also sells on that auction website. My 2A016 engines were made by Colt Industries and cost the government $1,000 or so in the 1980's. Mine have electronic ignitions, but if the engine overheats very much, say on a hot summer day, the electronic ignition conks out till it cools down. NEVER run ethanol gas in them--the carbs and fuel pump rubber elements will not last. I always run non-ethanol gas in mine. There should be a lever at the lower side of the fuel pump to prime the carb.
Good GI excersize pull starting an Engine
Good one. I love those old military engines. Shake rattle and roll!
very cool. that you and mustie have the same engine very nice. I look forward to seeing the mini bike build
Very good educational and entertaining video, cheers !
Still the best on youtube. T f a great fun. Learn from you. More about 4 stroke mower engines. Thanks. From the uk
Kinda reminds me of me in my younger days, I get something new, I have to take it apart to see how it works.
I thought Jr’s shotgun was going to go off during handcuffing! LOL
Yep the Briggs coils have print on them that says Install this side out.
Oh it’s gonna be a good one
I don't know which one I like better. Old Gilligan island reruns or lawn mower. Detectives, it's so hard to decide.
Lawn mower detectives kick ass
At 19:40 sounds exactly like a Harbor Freight driveway alert chime. Taryl, am I right?
one cannot neglect the chocolate doughnettes as a lawnmower detective!!! Even with your weapon drawn!!!
Neat little engine Taryl appreciate the videos buddy 👍
awesome video guys .peace an love from scotland stu an family.
for your minibike application I would use a Tecumseh fully adjustable diaphragm carb
Phibber McGee and Molly. Great radio show
They made a 2 cyl 16hp version. My dad got one in a auction from Kirtland AFB in the late seventies.
Breaks and Scrappum - not heard that one before! LOL
'lawnmower detectives' !! What a hoot !!
You guys are prefect for the new 87,000 IRS jobs...
Those old engines were built so well. Nothing built today will last 10 years, let alone 63 years.
I think a Kawasaki FJ-180V engine will last a long time. Aside from that, you may be right.
Typical boomer jaded nostalgia.
You really think nothing made in 2022 will last until 2032?
Ten short years?
Good god you old codgers are ridiculous
I have the 2 cylinders versions for a generator ! looks a good and strong engine....just annoying to start with the rope
Love that Slippers
Love these general purpose engines
You wished they made them like that again? Good reason. Continental made a lot of aircraft engines. I think they knew what they were doing. Too funny! As soon as soon as I was done watching this one, Lube tube suggested I watch Mustie's video of the same engine.
grouse engines Taryl mate and yep i can imagine a few Military bases used em for high end jobs back from the late 1950s into the 1960s etc but yeah all good etc and cheers from Australia 🐑🐨🦘🌏 to your area.
That carb looks like a old 50's-60's Evinrude/Johnson design as does the spraybar and emulation tube different but looks so so familiar I've done 1000's outboards
That's a neat engine. Looks like it has an oil pump for the valve train. Advanced for 1959.
Looks like an interesting little engine Taryl. I can’t wait to see it on a bike. Hurry up. 👍🔧🇬🇧🤣
Very funny and very creative!
You guys put a lot of work in your skits
Breaks & Scrapem lmfao!!!!!🤣all the years i worked on small engines i never heard that...too funny
Ever do any harbor freight predator engines? I'd like to see if they break down a lot and come in to get fixed.
A Harbor Freight Predator engine is so cheap if it breaks you just throw it away and get a new one. It's not worth getting it fixed. By the time you're done with parts and labor fixing it is more expensive than replacing it is. That and parts availability is limited.
Reminds me of those vibrating football games with the little magnetic players vibrating aimlessly all over the field. 😂😂😂
Good job! How about a military themed mini trike or quad?
OMG, the Lawnmower Detectives theme song is stuck in my head.
Mine too!
That's a good idea about the mini bike I thought about the same thing but on a go kart and paint it army green very good idea id like to see a video of the bike when you get it finished that would be cool I love your videos btw
Another cool video thank you
Do you have any tips on fixing a deck that had an idle pulley rust off? There's a hole where it used to be and no matter the belt size I switch too it just doesn't work without it. I think my options would be larger other pulleys or welding that thin metal.
Okay Terrell I just caught this video but you wanted to put this military engine into a military mini bike. Cushman did make one with a three horse kick type starter for the for the D-Day military invasion sold a paratroopers could jump and have some transportation when they touched the ground. You put that out you might find one of those and it was made by Cushman and Cushman had a big plant in Lincoln Nebraska. So there's your dinner grass rat you might get lucky
Pretty cool engine. Can't wait to see what you come up with for the mini bike.
I can feel the tension!
Our engine had an elevated fuel tank bolted to it and used a gravity fed system.
Interesting...
just wondering.... since I have no knowledge of ihat engine... I noticed a few possibles .. one is engine seem to have lightweight flywheel ... two, is carb may not have idle circuit... three, governor... as you stated... I would crack the case cover off to see and completely remove the governor assembly... light flywheel can makes it stubborn to crank.. just older push mower.. without blade attached, not enough momentum to spin over to next stroke..
Taryl what do you think of the early 90s Honda liquid cooled lawn tractors? Any good?
They were and still are the best tractors EVER made!
@@donmayberryjrsOPE sounds great. What makes them so good?
Taryl have you ever came across an older Lauson Built small engine. I had one but it threw a rod. It had a similar Oil pump like a Techumseh?
Hey Taryl, what brand of welder is that little yellow box we keep seeing in the background? I had a lousy little SMAW 120v welder that looked a lot like that--just a rotary knob to adjust the infinite transformer, but even at max amperage, it wasn't good for burning anything larger than 1/16" rod. I think it was a Chicago Electric or similar low-end brand; I wound up hawking it to a flea at the local market for $30.
Hey wild man I watch your video’s and have learned a lot from you. But I need help with my husakvarna yth18542. It has a kholer courage engine on it! I know it’s a bucket engine. But with your help I have it running good. The charging system doesn’t work. I need to know which wire coming off the wiring harness to hook the voltage regulator to??
I live in texas or I would bring it to you.
Thanks
Pup
Brilliant video thank u 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I had a twin cylinder verson of this a long time ago but it was a generator. it worked very well. All I did was clean the glass fuel filter and I added fresh gas and it fired right up with no issues. I wish I would have known what HP it was. Because it was an old military generator it sold fast.
You guys kill me with your skits.
btw Taryl you just crack me up with youre funny facial expressions.
Love the video taryl.
I swear that's my old engine I rebuilt and repaint, that orange Briggs, it's a 70s model Montgomery ward, it came of a walk behind leaf blower.
Good video, never knew that Continental made small engines...only air craft engines.
There are a lot of continentals in old farm equipment.
How about adding a squeeze bulb primer to the fuel inlet line?
You can't sneak up on anybody with that engine running !😳
