    My realm in vanilla had a "consultant guild" for a while lol. It was filled with tanks and healers who were rented out for a fee to raiding guilds who were missing a couple of tanks or healers for their raid that night. The "consultants" got to raid and were promised to be allowed to roll for specific items they wanted from the raid, and a small chunk of the fee. The rest of the fee went to the GM and officer team of the consultant guild. Obviously only worked for lower tier raids, but I think they had a pretty good business going for a while.
    I don't remember the name of the guild, but it was on Laughing Skull-EU.

    Great show! A few things to note about vanilla which affected raiding:
    Repair bills were nuts, especially for plate wearers, making progression expensive. buffs were hard (paladins? lol), so maximizing raid members with buffs, flasks, etc wasn't as doable back then. Threat was a super huge part of raiding. You couldn't just launch all your crap at the boss the second the fight started. You had to ease into the fight so you wouldn't pull.
    Also, very few people actually used addons, and as you mentioned there were few resources for video guides or boss descriptions. Thottbot was life. Many people still clicked their action buttons, making movement mechanics for 40 players nuts. Razer naga didn't exist, few people had mics/headsets. People played on laptops ...with the trackpad.... ... ...
    It was a hardcore game in a soft era for gamers. Studies have shown it take about 10,000 hours of applied practice to become a professional at a complex task (like sports, video games, chess, etc). It takes reasonably 10 years or more for a person to accomplish this. Think about this in the context of our 13 year old game. Anyone who has played and practiced on raiding content since vanilla is essentially a professional now. =)

    I remember in vanilla, I was the guild's "Puller" as a hunter. You had to know aggro ranges really well and time a feign death to just pull one mob and not several or it was a wipe. That meant I had to be at every raid like the tank. I remember there was some drama when we brought in another hunter in prep for Blackwing Lair and were gearing up in Mn Core. We had up to Majordomo on farm which meant that Priests and Hunters held onto their points for getting the class quest items (the leaf or the eye) to get our epic weapon. The drama was actually from me. Our hunter class officer was not able to make it which had most of the raid thinking the "puller" would receive it. Instead they just straight up gave the quest item as a gift to the new hunter who had just joined the guild. I was more immature back then, so I didn't take it too well... even though I received it the following week. But that's how guilds were back then. Loot was the purple-eyed monster that would break groups because purple was so sought after back then.

      Mate i play classic as hunter, we finally beat sulfuron as a 21 man and it took us all the way to beating rag in one night, but the grind to get that far was horrible. Itd be easier with more, but if i got shafted on leaf for a new guy thatd be gquit right there i dont even care. Dives would have nothing on my fury.

    I remember that we had a player that played Prot Paladin back then. And as a guild we tried to give him a few chances to tank in raids. Even though on progression bosses he healed and buffed (mostly buffed) on trash and on farm bosses he tanked. He was the reason we got through Razorgore in the first place ... our hunters were potatoes and only one of them even had a rudimentary understanding of what kiting means ... so we positioned all our healers in the middle of the room. The mobs ran straight to them where the consecratoin from our prot pally lied. so he got the aggro from them and kited all of the mobs around, always running through the middle to refresh the consecration. We got so used to him doing that, that we couldnt get past razorgore when he wasnt there.

    DKP wasn't too hard to track. Of all the systems we had, I still think DKP is the best solution because it forces players to really think about what items are important to them. In our guild we also allowed players to donate DKP, so if enough people thought that say the tank or one of the healers should get a particular item they could donate their own DKP to that person to bolster their bid and let them get the item. This meant that showing favoritism had a real cost to it and that tended to keep tempers and emotions in check, whereas guilds which had rules allowing the guild masters to assign gear for whatever reason they wanted tended to have tempers blow up more often. Those guilds tended to disintegrate more quickly.
    Another thing that worked well in conjunction with the DKP system was for players to state their intentions. Before the boss fight (even before the RAID started), players that really wanted a particular item would state so, so when it came to the bidding guild members already knew who really wanted the item. No surprises == less drama.

    I will never forget my first raid - I was level 56 (I think,) and we were raiding stratholme undead side. I want to say it was only 10 players rather than 15, but it was scary all the same. The friends I played with were whispering me tips. I didn't have a guild at that point but eventually joined up with those same folks I raided with that day. Vanilla was good fun but like you said, we all pretty much sucked. It was fun though to figure out strategies and it felt great to finally finish a big raid like Molten Core and Blackwing Lair. I always felt slighted when they did finally cap some of those dungeons at five people, only because I think I benefited from joining those early raids and I figure that a lot of other people could have as well. Oh well though. Great video as always!!!

    Originally for WoW's release you could bring a full 40 man raid into pretty much any dungeon I think, but you DEFINITELY could do it for UBRS/LBRS, Strat, Scholo, etc. I was playing from release day w/ patch 1.1 onwards so I can definitely remember taking 20+ people into these dungeons. I remember vividly just how painful this was for the egg room, or trying to get people keyed for Onyxia when Drakkisath only dropped one blood at a time. But we would start a raid and get as many people as we could to make things go as quickly as possible. Blizzard knew this was unintended but sat on their hands because they had a feeling at the time that they didn't want to make content that already existed "harder" even though UBRS was originally tuned for no more than 15 players and the later half of UBRS was tuned for 10, according to Jeff Kaplan. It wasn't until patch 1.3, with the release of Dire Maul, that Blizzard finally did something about it and fixed the player caps on these dungeons since they were implementing another major pre-raid dungeon in Dire Maul. UBRS became a 15 man raid max, but people generally ran LBRS with less people since it was easier. Strat and Scholo were tuned down to 10. Those two dungeons didn't become 5 mans until MUCH later in vanilla's life. Patch 1.10 to be exact.
    I hear a lot of people often get their information wrong about these dungeons and how they originally were. Even J Allen Brack has done it during WoW Classic interviews by saying UBRS was a 10 man raid and then changed to 5. Nope, if we're being specific it started life as an open ended raid and you took as many people as you could get, and then later changed to 15 and finally 10. It wasn't until cataclysm that it became a 5 man dungeon.
    Most guilds I know of used DKP like systems. We used this sort of system although it was called "GP" or Guild Points I think, not DKP, and I didn't know of any guilds on my server that just straight up /rolled for loot. The points system was a way of ensuring it was fair across the board, and it took out the RNG aspect of rolling. There was already enough RNG getting your item to drop in the first place from bosses to then add even more RNG on top of that by having to roll against a bunch of other people. If you had saved enough points, and you had the most points available when your item dropped, you got said item and you paid for it with your points. It was up to the player what gear they wanted to prioritize and they'd keep racking up their points as long as they were showing up to raids and participating. Time=Reward.
    PS: I'm also remembering there was a point in the game where Ragnaros wouldn't even spawn if you killed Majordomo. I could be entirely wrong about that but I think initially very early in vanilla Ragnaros was bugged and wouldn't spawn for guilds that cleared all the way through Majordomo. I could be misremembering the "bug" but I'm pretty sure there definitely was some kind of bug involving him. My guild was probably a month late in terms of getting the world first rag kill if I had to guess.

    warlocks had good DPS but threat was an issue along with their main source of damage DOTS they werent able to put them up because of the low debuff slots on bosses

      curse of elements was it for the mages than curse of weakness and only than if you where the 3rd lock in the raid you could use your dps curse correct me if im wrong

    • @jasperneggers5284
      @jasperneggers5284 6 лет назад +4

      Yes, warlocks were pretty good in terms of single target DPS when they had good gear and got support from the raid's healers. In general they were not easy to shine on a consistent base. Besides the rotation of the curses, of which the Curse of elements actually helped your own fire damage a little and curse of shadows helped to reduce shadow resistance (which added to your dmg if it became negative!), you also had the problem that in a few fights you were required to use banish and keep your target controlled. One of the problems I also had (I raided everything until Twin emps on AQ40) were mana issues. In longer fights your mana could easily run out and you did not have any way to regain mana besides using a potion or Life Tap. When your guild had not mastered the fights and healers/tanks were a bit undergeared, they did not have the mana or time to heal you when you life-tapped, which could really reduce your damage output in some cases. However, when healers were able to help you out, you could deal some real damage when life-tapping away between rotations. Another complication were the soulshards, if you really wanted, you could bring 80+ soulshards to a raid and use shadowburn in your dps rotation on specific fights, which could actually boost your DPS enough to be noticed. So if you had the healers to back you up, had the soulshards and were the lucky warlock not be on a banish rotation or personally "useless" curse, you could deal some serious dps.
      On a side note, most warlocks played a destruction - ruin spec build, just because affliction and demonology did not provide enough DPS and because you had a debuff limit (making affliction difficult). This required you to have a decent amount of critical strike and high spell power, and the more crit you got the faster you could outperform the other classes in comparision. I had the feeling that in BWL and early AQ, warlocks were one of those classes that could boost their dps quicker than average when getting the right items. However, I never had the feeling I was dealing top damage as compared to similar geared rogues that knew how to play.

      Ahh this is true - totally forgot about that! I remember warriors weren't allowed to use rend because it basically just ate up a debuff slot. One of the weird quirks of Vanilla raiding. I can't remember if this was fixed in BC? I'll have to look that up for the next one. Thanks for sharing

    The one drawback of vanilla raiding,as you pointed out, was there was clear tiers to the roles and it ended up pigeon holing players into roles and specs because of their class. That was my favorite thing about TBC, that they made every spec bring something to the whole of a raid comp, whether it be raid wide buffs, debuffs, or versatility.
    You wanted a Warrior or a Feral Druid to MT...but you also wanted a Prot Pally for an Off-Tank cause they could scoop up large groups easily.
    You wanted both Holy and Disc Priests so they could double up on the mitigation and they got better versions of their buffs depending on their spec.
    Every spec of Shaman had their job to play (plus you could keep cycling Bloodlust lol).

    My best memory of Scholomance in Vanilla is the whelp room above Razorgore. We were doing great when all of a sudden all the mobs started going down the stairs to Razorgore's room. I said in vent "where do they think they're going?!" It was about the time that we all realized our tank got knocked through one of those side chutes down to Razorgore's room, and then he was dead and we all just laughed and yelled "RUUUUUNNN!!!"... not that it helped. I loved wipes like that, they helped make the game so much more fun. :D
    p.s. I miss resistance gear. I used to have so much fun trying to get my resistances high, and still have a half way viable amount of damage/healing. Really, I miss the RPG in this MMO. WoW is almost as far from an RPG as Super Mario Bros. and about as easy now.

      Strat was actually 15-man, iirc. Live Strat was far easier (like LBRS), though, and people just ran it with 10. Dead Strat was a freaking pain even with 15, because you weren't just battling the mobs. You were fighting the clock.
      If you got into Dead Strat really early in WoW's life, you were treated to a race against time to get into the Slaughterhouse... because the three Ziggurat crystals would regenerate after a time (hour and 45 minutes when each was destroyed, iirc again), closing the slaughterhouse gate again. With mob respawns, that pretty much meant you had an hour and 45 minutes to clear before the dungeon effectively reset. The only thing that would stop it is clearing the courtyard event. The dungeon was so hard to start, and the timer made it next to impossible to clear... Dungeon set pants were considered a badge of honor. But Bliz still eventually hotpatched out the timer to give groups a little more chance to clear.
      Later, Bliz gave a nod to that old gate timer, when we had that Tier .5 (Dungeon set 2) event "Dead Man's Plea" with the kidnap hostage that Rivendare held and would be executed if you didn't kill him in time. Granted, that one was way faster... 45 minutes and a full race to at least engage the boss within the timer (as long as you engage him with a second left, killing him would prevent the execution). Then again, the dungeon was so easy at that time, that 45 minutes was practically a breeze compared to the old days.

    • @Alexandros.Mograine
      @Alexandros.Mograine 6 лет назад +2

      the player cap of strat was 10man, and as both exist in the same instance, you cant run strat ud with 15man, ofc you could do it in the early patches when there was no dungeon cap

    • @rcslyman8929
      @rcslyman8929 6 лет назад

      Right... right. I completely forgot about that. But we definitely ran it with 15 because that timer was brutal. And Bliz removed it before the player limit cap was put into effect, because there's no way most 10-man teams were getting through that dungeon within time, with the gear that was available.

    • @brosephjames
      @brosephjames 6 лет назад +1

      You're all wrong! :P the first couple months of vanilla wow had no player cap. You could bring 40 people to strat or scholo or even deadmines, if you really wanted. I was in one 40 man strat run just to rush people through quests.

    For MC, you were required to do a quest chain for the Hydraxian Waterlords faction to receive an item call Aqual Quintessence, which was a single use item used to douse a rune guarded by the bosses in MC. In total you required 7 runes to be doused, so more than one person was required to go to Azshara each week to obtain a new quintessence if you wanted to run the raid without interruptions. You needed to be honored with the Waterlords to be able to start the part of the quest chain, which required you to kill all the Flamewaker bosses in MC (Lucifron, Gehennas, Shazzrah and Sulfuron), and only when completing this quest were you eligible to receive the Aqual Quintessences. So basically you were required to do almost one full clear of the raid before even getting close to finishing it.
    In 1.11 they introduced the Eternal Quintessence, which you could obtain at revered status with the Waterlords. The item was on a 1-hour cooldown, so again you required people with enough reputation with the Waterlords, but this time you weren't required to go to Azshara each week to retrieve a new quintessence for raiding.
    The quest chain and the requirement to douse all the runes to summon Executus was removed in 3.0.8 at the launch of WotLK.

    I started WOW on TBC back in 2008 but it was on a private server as I live in India and the $15 a month was expensive for me. But it was close to Blizz like. Majority of the people had already gear up with Karazhan, serpentshine cavern and Tempest Keep gear. We used to do the 40 man Vanilla Raids with 25 people. Once the Black Temple and Sunwell came out and people were able to gear up, the Vanilla raids went from 25 to 15 people. People used to farm the Vanilla raids to level enchanting and collect gear for RP.

    One of the super random things I recall from Vanilla raiding was the big call for Dwarven Priests for Onyxia -- Sadly I wasn't at level before it got patched out, but I believe the Dwarven Priests had a racial specific spell directly relating to fear breaking or resistance.
    Oh man other things I remember :) -- yes I just found your videos & have been watching them.
    I remember a time before iLVL! *GASP* stop the world! A time back when you had to either do the math yourself "Or pester a Guildmate" to properly stat yourself without waste via what gear to equip, as well as having to split up a set to wear something with resist which was touched upon in the video.

    5 main vanilla raid feature
    1) many ppl can't use voice - to low internet bandwidth and high traffic cost(epic skill of typing for RL was needed)
    2) very often take ppl for another guild(dwarf priest for onixia etc) or 2 guilds make one 40ppl raid
    3) fight in front of entrance with another faction(summon don't work inside instance, early BC was same)
    4) farm for resist potions and another consumables(early BC was same)
    5) attunes(early BC was same)
    First spreadsheets appeared in Vanilla but for real dps check we use immortal mobs in blasted lands, only in BC training dummies was introduced and after this spreadsheets became widely available.
    Rip Decurce and many more useful addons and binds (

    Stratholme was also very often ran with 10 people, if only to cover all the class for the pant piece from Baron, and the 3 towers to clear had a very fast re-spawn and was really buggy in itself, often preventing the gate to the abon to not open until we cleared them a few times

    Nice video (: Just have to say another aspect that was hard to manage when the 40 people dungeons came out was that there had been no group interface for the entire raid beside in the menu. So u basically had to sit an healer in each grp to an an overview and as far as i can remember grp one was 3 tanks + 2 healers only doing singletargetheal on them. Also Guilds having class leaders had been important back then due communication issues and boss explaining/coordinating and i loved it. At the class balance i've abit to disagree. Our guild was 2nd clear on the Server Nefarian @ BWL so we had been into end-progress. But we were also known having unusuall class using. Like we had an sword MS-Warrior in the raid (no shit^^) and he was always top 1-8 in DPS (he was like place 20-30 until 30% health and then his deadly strike got him up until he got sometimes even aggro over the tank and died often ....yeh lots of love at 2nd boss in bwl haha, i was permahealing him, died on every try but the dmg was clear nr1^^ ....thanks that i remember now those funny stuff^^) Fury Warriors with propper hit/crit were also good and goddamn great at aoe. Warlocks did GREAT damage when having some bwl gear and beeing destruction (was often place one in raid against an 120 energy dagger rogue and t2 combat rogue). My full t2 druid hold up with every priest mostly and overall was unbeatable in manamanagement when it comes to t2(it had setboni that gave druids part of manaregen going on while casting and was upping the hot time while t1 had like nothing for them). Druids have only been weak if they cannot permacast all the time.PvP mine was an unreachable healmonster but this is another story x) We even had an 2h retri pala in the mainraid with pretty good dps (middle rank). elemental shamans were also able to be an good DPS-class in raids but this was sadly also kinda very rare. And also Hunters were able to outdps Rogues back then. Our hunter outdpsed an mc geared rogue on autohit beeing whole fight in the kitchen i can remember (but hunters gear was bwl/aq40 mainly) :P I don't know if u remember the issue of the afk-Hunters in raids, or they always known beeing bit lazy back then. It was total chaotic (and funny) when they introduced bwl and hunters had to do some classbounded cc first time :P Also mages had their spikes and Fire ones did tons of damage but yeh -> no mc,bwl ^^ Overall my remembering is the balance u remember was like pre-mc. Later gear pretty much changed the whole balance to the better in my opinion, some classes just have been alrdy avarage dps with low gear while for example an Offensive Warrior needed to have like 30% crit if wanna be usefull in raids (this kinda standart setup to reach it i could see on the sweet warrior with sulfurion in the video hehe )Also when they intruduced zf later that was a pretty good bridge getting those stats before mc what was big help back then for lots of guilds that werent able to do mc/bwl stuff... also zf was an fun location for open pvp... 3-5 ppl with aq40 gear vs 25 half blue/epic geared raiders was fun and nearly balanced xD wow i wrote way too much, fuckin nostalgica sorry ;) One last thing, loved the fact to see those big maintanks always in ironforge representing kinda the raidstatus of the guild due they always nr1 at getting gear^^ And not a single of them on the server looked exactly like the other

    also in 40-mans every class had to have its own leader who had to know the fights inside and out specifically for their class, so you had to set up new chat channels, negotiate DKP, assign healers to specific people or groups, tell them whom to ignore, pass out food, etc. that took about an hour itself in the old days.

    It might have been worth a mention that paladins and shamans were faction specific which had an effect on available buffs. Plus from what I remember paladins only had the 10 minute buffs initially, making it frustrating to keep up on 40 people at once. As mentioned in another comment, the ragnaros kill says "onyxia" in the top left corner (15:20). Also I swear there's a faint clicking noise in the last few minutes of the video.

    I was a feral tank back then, until I switched to resto after we recruited another tank that was geared better, which by pure chance was also feral. Later we recruited a Shaman which became our main tank and the druid became back-up. Ppl that were guests in our raids were often very surprised at our group make-up and often thought it would be a wipe fest. But, it wasn't, both our tanks were amazing.

    What I miss the most is raids meant back in the day... You can't deny that raids (for some expansions now) mean nothing else but "gather in this spot, kill boss, say goodbye to your guildmates and go on your merry way". Before it meant preparation and a challenge.

    I am sure you mentioned it in another video, but for the people only watching this one I think it's fair to say that the game was released first in US, Australia and New Zealand, and only after several months in other parts of the world. Thus, the US server guilds had quite an advantage, so it would have been quite impossible for them not to be the first that finish raids.

    I still remember the early days with shamans and paladins dedicated to off-combat-resurrection. Back in early Vanilla you would not be automatically in combat once a boss fight starts. If you stood like 100m away, you would stay off combat and could resurrect people who have died during the fight. Not sure when they changed it so the whole instance was in combat once the boss was pulled. 1.5?
