    I thought I'd take a few minutes and make a comparison between my Ibanez AF71 ($400) and my Eastman AR810ce with the Kent Armstrong PAF ($2,000-ish). Both are fantastic guitars for the money but how much of a difference in sound really is there? They are both floating pickup acoustic guitars constructed out of maple, but the Ibanez is a laminate while the Eastman is solid wood. The Eastman is also slightly larger with a 17" lower bout. I recorded everything through an MXL 5000 large body condenser microphone plugged into my Focusrite Saffire 6 interface feeding into Logic Pro. The amp you hear is a Fishman Loudbox Mini acoustic amp.

    To me eastman is clearly better both acoustic and amplified...
    So the real question becomes "is that difference worth the price?"
    The listener will pay more attention to the sound, the player will pay more attention to the instrument feel...

      if I could afford an eastman yes they r nice sounding but if I saw a used car to take me 2 a gig then the car would b my investment. so I would get the Ibanez which will get me 2 a gig than get an eastman or price like guitar then have it stolen and lose out. I have friends who've bought eastmans at those prices and 1 was stolen right from the gig and said should have gotten the Ibanez instead and the rest r scared to play a gig with theirs.

      Actually having a better quality instrument that makes it easier to express oneself is a very good thing. I have a friend who is an amazing viola player and has gone as far as he can with his current instrument. His teacher suggests he is only being limited by his instrument. The next step up for him is to go from a $20,000 instrument up to one that is closer to $45K.

    This shows how much sound nuance is lost in electric guitars. Unplugged the Eastman wins by a mile. Plugged in the Ibanez does great and there there is more a difference in character than in "quality" as such (Ibanez basically brighter).

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician  6 лет назад +2

      The pickup on the Eastman has a particularly dark sound. The original that came with the guitar was much brighter, like the Ibanez.

    Acoustically, the Eastman really dominates. Plugged in, I actually preferred the Ibanez - just. You are a great player and your musicianship is of the sort that makes me want to listen for a long time. Hope you keep making these videos.

    I definitely noticed a big difference- both unplugged and plugged in. I currently have an Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II, which I also got discounted for about $400. It is a reliable, gig worthy laminate hollow body jazz guitar that is a work horse- no doubt about it. The Eastman 800 series with the floating pickup and solid tone wood is clearly a huge step up IMHO though. $2k is a lot of money but it is an investment worth making if you are serious about taking it to the next level with jazz guitar, as you are and I am.

    When I am shopping for a guitar I don't worry too much about the sound as it depends on so many other factors. But what I do pay attention to is the playability. And I often find that the cheaper guitars are just not that playable compared to more expensive models.

  • @janprimus
    @janprimus 7 лет назад +11

    Yes it is definitely worth it! The Eastman sounded so much better acoustically. As someone who's played most of his life I find the experience of the instrument in your hand you so much more than just how it sounds plugged in. Your playing is great! I am sure if you were to venture an opinion you would agree. I Understand you have to be impartial, or at least appear to be impartial, but I would wager given your druthers you would pick the better guitar. I have an 810 CE. It was my main guitar for years until I had a custom guitar built by a friend in Mosier Oregon. The physical feeling and vibe of the better guitar is apparent when I am playing.

    • @janprimus
      @janprimus 6 лет назад +2

      Well of course they sound better acoustically with a nice heavy set of phosphor bronze. Since that was my main gigging guitar for a few years I used mostly flatwounds on it only because they are so fun to play. I used a Kent Armstrong P90 on it and it sounds amazing plugged in through either an AER Compact 60 or my other amp setup is a Clarus plus head run through a Raezers Edge Stealth 10er cabinet. I have used the Thomastiks and the George Bensons, and a few others. I don't have a clear favorite, but I have also been moving to a lighter gauge string as of late to alleviate pain in my hands from playing too long and too hard. :-/

    Awesome playing man, subbed!
    I deleted a couple of smart arse comments about comparing these two guitars (sorry about the inbox spam), but suffice to say they are very different, I think the Ibanez has a niche that the Eastman doesn't - it would be better for loud gigs etc. Eastman works great in the studio, sounds fab miked. I recently toured with an AF85 (with classic 57s) and everyone raved about how good it sounded on stage.... I normally play a vintage ES175, so there you go. Lot of guitar for not much money.

On the other hand, my Epiphone Howard Roberts (with a Kent Armstrong p/u upgrade) sounds way better for most "jazz box" gigs. It's also telling you swapped out the OEM p/u in the Eastman... Nice playing too, thanks!

    A little unfair to compare. But who said that life is fair. Obviously the Eastman AR810ce Kent Armstrong PAF, has a body with better acoustics. But you have to give credit to the Ibanez AF71. Now, the musician plays an important role when playing an instrument as it will give life. The instrument itself is an inert thing ... But the Eastman can be played unplugged and still sound like a jazz guitar. The Ibanez sounds dead. I bought an Eastman 803 for $700 used on Revb. Best money I've ever spent on a guitar.

    So weird seeing the Eastman as the expensive guitar in a comparison video.... The Eastman is the real value as it is truly hand made, all solid carved top back and sides, even that tail-piece is carved out of ebony by hand...Comparable to a $6-8K Gibson or...? Ibanez also makes great stuff, totally different deal here... both cool guitars. You're also a good player and make both of those sound great. Love that amber color

    Thanks for this vid. It's a tremendous help! I have the Ibanez on the way via ebay, and I'm still excited but there's no argument that the $2,000 eastman is worth the money. It was kind of you to not direct A/B the amp demo but being played together the AF71 has no cringe reaction for me. I think it sounds great. Great playing too. Thanks again.

    Eastman just has a cleaned and much more defined bass tone to me. But even the highs are cleaner and crisp. That is a very nice guitar. I like Ibanez, electric that is. Never blown away by their acoustics.

    No surprise -- fortunately! Yes, the Eastman is better. But the margin is closer than one might expect. That AF71 is a remarkable guitar for the money. As for the Eastman, $2000 for a handcrafted custom guitar is actually on the cheap side, so even that one can be considered a good deal.

    Alex, Great job, the Ibanez is a great guitar at a very good price, I have a friend that has one, but he doesn't play much. I will try it on for size,
    The Eastman speaks for itself and with the Kent Armstrong in it, the depth and fulness is all there,
    Thanks for sharing,

    You cannot compare a maple top archtop with a spruce top legitimately.
    Even if everything else was exactly the same on them it would be a drastic difference. The tops are monumentally important on those guitars, they respond completely differently.

    Nice version of "Donna Lee" The Ibanez is a great guitar for a beginner jazz player, compared to the Eastman it sounds like playing into a soup can though. But if not hearing the two sounds together the Ibanez would sound fine on it's own. The Ibanez is the way to go to get started with the feel of an archtop or jazzbox. Great playing and thanks for the side by side comparison.

    It's been a surprise to me, that the Ibanez when plugged in actually to some degree, sounded better perhaps, on the four higher strings than the Eastman, but the lower strings tone, wasn't attractive to me. Acoustically the Eastman was a commanding victor. I wonder why the need to change the PU in the Eastman. I'm looking at the Eastman or the D'Angelico Throwback, both around 2K and at that price, I don't want to change anything but the strings. I'm hoping to find one, I enjoy playing, with no regrets and sounds magnificent acoustic as well as plugged in. I've got an Amp that I can really dial in, but I spend most the time unplugged.

  • @johnvolk995
    @johnvolk995 6 лет назад

    Yes it is worth it, but if you have only $400 then the Ibanez is fine - play, don't wait! To me, the Eastman was 10x better acoustically and 5x better plugged in (ok, exageratting a bit). To me the acoustic sound is super important. Adds a lot to low volume performing, and for recording I use at least one mic for guitar acoustics, and the room mic will pic it up too if the overall volume is moderate. Excellent vid to show the difference between budget and higher end instruments!

    Both have a great sound, with the Eastman having the edge. The Base response in the Eastman makes it. I have a Carlo Robelli, which is really a Peerless. The spruce top makes the difference.

    This is the one place where the tonewood debate is valid the Eastman does in fact sound better because of the construction of the guitar and the material it's made of it's solid top versus a laminated top so the wood in fact is going to actually project sound better but that's where the tonewood debate stops when you get involved in solid electric guitars people have this notion that tonewood matters when it doesn't but in this case it absolutely does matter and you can definitely hear the difference.
    For the price the Ibanez sounds amazing they're great guitars especially for practice or even playing a gig nothing wrong with it.
    Great guitars both of them

    Eastman every time for me. Great demo comparison at the end using L&R channels. Excellent playing. (even tho' you were playing jazz, part of your piece reminded me of an LP called 'Nashville Guitar' which I've had since the 60's and which reminded me that most of the greats from that time used archtops). Thanks.

    Wait, I think we were short-changed: you only played solo with the $2,000 and no solo on the Ibanez. From what I heard, the $2,000 had a very beautiful resonance that I liked a lot. I myself bought my first beginner electric Les Paul 335 by Grotz for $300.

    I was surprised how good the Ibanez sounded amplified. It had more presence than the Eastman. I play fingerstyle and need a guitar with more presence. The Eastman was too dark when amplified IMHO although it sounded better acoustically. Never mind the cork sniffers. I want a tool that will get the job done and doesn't need armed guards watching over it at a gig. Nice playing BTW cheers

      Alex This guitar has a Beautiful finish is made well ,with Grover tuners and it reminds me Basically of a Gibson ES-175-D that was stolen from the trunk of my car long time ago except that it has 1 mini humbucker neck P/U
      i Had a stroke in June of 2018 and I'm recovering pretty well but my left hand is taking some time getting bar chords back in the Game so I'm using whatever means to make melodies that I can ,triads , single notes , scales Squeezy devices designed to strengthen fingers, Alternate tunings ! I bought a classical guitar thinking that might help and an accordion (which was my first ever instrument at an early age)
      and that's getting the fingers going and the arm moving the bellows.I have the Washburn tuned like "rainsong guitar tuning and lesson by 365 guitar" and I'm making progress every time I pick the Guitar up ! Playing it through a Boss Katana 100 x12 and it has a decent Jazz tone and I'm keeping my hopes up that it will sound the way I want it to when my fingers cooperate better !
