  • Shilah Carroll, a second-grade teacher at Littlewood Elementary School in Gainesville, is April’s One Class at a Time winner. TV20 partners with Gatorland Toyota and BMW of Gainesville to award an exceptional teacher $500 every month.
“I am able to pour into them like teachers did to me. So then that love that I pour into them they can pour into the next and the next and the next for generations to come” said Carroll.
Ms. Carroll was raised in Alachua County public schools. She went to Lake Forest Elementary, Howard Bishop Middle, and Buchholz High School.
“I had really inspirational teachers here growing up so I wanted to put back that love and attention that I got as a kid coming up here and putting it back into Alachua County,” said Carroll.
Ms. Carroll’s 10-year teaching career has been inspired by her family.
“One of my biggest inspirations is my grandma. She is a retired music teacher. She taught for 57-58 years and she’s always been such a strong proponent of teaching” said Carroll.
Ms. Carroll says 2nd graders have innate energy and are very curious.
She describes her teaching style as hands-on that adapts to all students’ educational levels.
“The kids will never say they are bored in her class every piece of material she finds a way to make it fun and engaging and i think learning is so much easier for the students when they are engaged and having fun, said Principal Justin Russell.”
Ms. Carroll hopes to pour into her students and community for years to come.
“It’s like a flower you know you plant a seed and it grows if you keep planting the seed you’ll eventually have a field full of flowers” said Carroll.
