Emma has performed this song many times going back to 2021 when she was 12 years old. This arrangement and performance, however, is something very special. I have never heard a more beautiful version of this iconic song. Wonderful reaction. Thanks very much.
I love your Emma reactions. You give her performances new dimensions for me to admire. Its great. You are absolutely right about Emma's maturity. I recently read some of Emma's own written notes from when she was 11 to 12 years old. She wrote with a style, language an depth not normal for a child of that age. She wrote about her health, the life challenges she faced, the bullying she suffered and the resulting changing of schools, the mental impact of all this, as well as her very young performances and the escape music and singing provided for her. Frankly, I found it acutely distressing yet compelling to read. It certainly helped me understand where all that emotion in her voice comes from and maybe where that maturity was formed. In the words of a song that conceivably saved Emma's life "...a little girl grew up too fast." What we get is something quite unique and above all, totally genuine. I find it hard to fully understand what happens when Emma sings and to express the sometimes unearthly experience it brings; but its without doubt 100% real. Thanks again for the super reaction.
Thank you for a superb, deeply sensitive reaction and commentaries. Emma’s courage in facing up to personal difficulties is enormous, and I easily believe, apparently like you, that this has been a major influence in giving this unbelievably excellent performer such mastery of her apparent feelings and actions. When only 15 for Voilà, she (apparently) fearlessly faced a 12500 audience and began with no « starting note » , and subsequently led and guided the orchestra through the complete performance : André was facing her and, without looking at the instrumentalists, discretely guided them so that they perfectly followed and beautifully enhanced her changes of mood, slight pauses, changes in volume, …. . It must be said also that she is fortunate to be able to work with such an exceptional conductor and orchestra who, when accompanying singers, willingly « move into the background » and concentrate on helping the solo performer to shine. Over the past half century (I am 80), I have become sick of being distracted by the overly-theatrical gymnastic gyrations of conductors (some of them quite well known) , and hearing orchestras and backing groups that «get the notes right » but seem to forget that they should be ACCOMPANYING and ENHANCING someone else’s performance, and not trying to impress us with their individual and collective instrumental virtuosity (this, of course, is partly the fault of their conductor/leader). Once again, thank you so much.
Paolo, thank you so much for your very nice and as always very informative reaction. Even when you don't speak your facial expressions tell me your admirarion of what Emma is doing. She does not just sing, she lives it, intentionally, closing eyss, clinching fist, bending knees. The editors als did a beautiful job. Greetings from the Netherlands, Jacques
