I don’t think derivative is quite right. Manet was very free with his influences, he was like a sponge. This made the Manet style very original, not caring at all for the Academy orthodoxy of the day. Being critical of his compositional failures is a category mistake. He never attempted to be a formal painter. You make some good points. Thanks for posting the video.

One could almost call it pre-postmodern in its profusion of creative reappropriations, though to be fair postmodernity can't claim to have invented such a thing so much as metastasised it.

Saw his painting in DC. His badly measured and badly proportioned figures look odd and create an unbalanced composition. I wonder if he had no proper academic training or just didn't care about how big or small the figures should be compare to each other.
Not my favorite artist and probably rather overrated.

He had many years of training and also spent hours copying the old masters in the Louvre, but literal realism was never his thing. Mysterious juxtapositions of people in space with no narrative logic, painted in flat colours that push the subject right up close to the picture plane. Manet was about feel, not fidelity.

I agree, no comparison with the greats of the Renaissance. Where impressionism starts, art takes a crap. lol

@@1776Based The Renaissance was a finite period. As Joni Mitchel said....
"On her recording Miles of Aisles, Joni Mitchell famously proclaimed, “That's one thing that's always, like, been a difference between, like, the performing arts, and being a painter, you know. A painter does a painting, and he paints it, and that's it, you know. He has the joy of creating it, it hangs on a wall, and somebody buys it, and maybe somebody buys it again, or maybe nobody buys it and it sits up in a loft somewhere until he dies. But he never, you know, nobody ever, nobody ever said to Van Gogh, 'Paint a Starry Night again, man!' You know? He painted it and that was it”.
Art can't stay stagnant, it has to move on, whether in Song or in Painting, of which Joni was involved in both forms. Feel free, of course, to comment as you see fit, but don't expect to go unchallenged when you say something so foolish!!
