    During Covid, the LCBO was considered an essential service and was open for sales. I thought essential services were not allowed to strike???

      There’s still booze available for the desperate at bars, restaurants, some grocery stores, wine shops and micro brew pubs. Restaurants and bars are still able to buy booze for their businesses.

      @@dawsonholdsworth5371you’re takes pretty short sighted. The lcbo is one of Ontario’s last revenue generators for the province. Just under 3 billion a year. Roads, schools, healthcare etc. was bad enough when Wynn chopped up the casinos and hydro not to
      Mention the 407. But this is truly awful and will lead to privatized healthcare. Anyone who’s actually paying attention can tell you the same. Or a quick google search should clear things up, cheers.

    They are not needed allow private stores to sell and let grocery store sell liquor. Cut all the excessive taxes on liquor and beer would be good too.

      The problem with that is you don't get near the selection, private stores and grocery stores don't have the room to stock what the LCBO stores have. A better solution is to privatize the LCBO stores.

      How is that any different?
      The LCBO has no incentive to do it cheaper, and tons of variety is lost due to price restrictions that prevent more efficient business from selling their product under the value of a competitor at the LCBO.

      @@Jim-ku6ry I completely agree. There would be so much benefit to this. The variety of products available to Ontarians/Canadians would increase greatly and what gets sold would not be controlled by one entity. And the barriers of industry entry would also lessen, it would also be a more competitive market. If I was an entrepeneur trying to make good drinks or alcohol, I could more easily enter the market. If I was a specialty store and wanted to order and sell something special from another country or from a local company, I could make that product available to consumers.

    Their skill set is stocking shelves right? And yet they go on strike.......truly an example of the Dunning Kruger effect where people with limited competence in a particular domain, (in this case alcohol, which sells itself) over estimate their abilities.

      not just that, alcohol is over taxed as it is, plus we have to pay someone out of our taxes $30 hour to scan bottles and cans. To this day lcbo has not put in a single self check out, while pretty much every other store has them these days...

      @@jacobross735 We have food basics near by and you can buy beer and wine using self check out, its been like that for years. They have a person that checks ids if they have to, I've never seen any issues there. $30 is still a good pay, don't forget you don't even need to finish high school to operate a cash register and put bottles on shelves. What's the point of going to universities and colleges then if you can save tons of money and make the same pay working at the lcbo?

      @@snowflakesfell4407 no you can’t I live in Ontario and you need to see a cashier to purchase alcohol. And because not everyone is striving to be a LCBO worker lol. You can make good money roofing or doing construction/trades which doesn’t require high school either but do you think the majority of people want to make a living that way? You go to school so you can have a comfortable career with flexibility that also pays well in a field that interests you.

    Alberta got rid of that in the 1990s. Jeez.

      We have been able to buy beer at grocery stores and on-site bottle shops at breweries for years. The LCBO is the exclusive retailer of premium spirits in the province. If it is on strike you have to leave provincial borders to buy.😂😂

      What they're actually asking for is to maintain a Government monopoly
      70% part-time employees
      They want to hire more full-time staff

      They're striking for job security and want to lay off employees some of the people on the strike line are going to get laid off

    Like buying from distilleries, breweries and wineries have never been an option??? The LCBO is a product distribution centers, much like grocery stores (in which some are selling beer, wine and ciders themselves). LCBO workers are glorified grocery store workers, stock shelves, and checkout sales. How's it any different that Dave down at the corner store does the same?

      Pretty sure you can’t buy directly from a distillery in Ontario - wineries and breweries, yes, but distilleries, no. Please correct me if I’m mistaken.

    Just go elsewhere for your liquor people should just make there own alcohol at home screw these big name brands. Or just buy your liquor online from a different liquor store.     Drop this monopoly. I spend 6 months of the year in Hong Kong. Alcohol sales are private. There are specialty stores all over the place that are open till 1am. It's not limited to convenient stores and crocery stores. And I could go to a 7-11 at 3am and buy a bottle of scotch if I wanted to. Also go into that same store and buy a beer, find a nice park bench and sip away. There are not mass alcoholic issues and there is very little dui. I love that city. Makes Toronto look like a pissy little dump hole
