  • This was part of Derek and I's recent trip to North Carolina! We took a drive to the Ray Mica Mine to search for some beautiful Aquamarine, Beryl, and Kyanite Crystals. To find the Kyanite we had to hike all the way to the top of the mountain!

Hey all! Derek the Rockmaster here! I just wanted to correct some information in the video. It was rather early and just finished driving about 2 hours on windy mountain roads and I misspoke about the classification of pegmatites. Pegmatites are actually igneous rocks and not a metamorphic rocks. In fact pegmatites are some of the best sources for rare gemstones like emerald and are great conduits for a conglomerate of other amazing minerals. I want to make sure I am providing right information for all who watch this channel.

That moonstone is so beautiful. But I also think mica looks pretty awesome. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much kyanite clustered together.
That area looks quite similar to certain areas here in Utah.
Thanks for the video, Lord Kyle! Thanks to Lord Derek also!

What a cool hike and some excellent finds 🙂 I can't wait for more snow and ice to melt here so I can get back to the ol' treasure hunting 👍 There's a steep hill up in the mountains outside of Colville, Wa that I've found some mica/quartz + a few tiny garnets.

I have a book on crystals and their healing properties and their other important information
    Kyanite
Kyanite is an usual mineral composed of aluminum silicate. It forms in parallel flate blades with visible striations, which are often embedded in metamorphic rocks or veins of quartz. An usual characteristic of Kyanite is that it has two levels of hardness- it is relatively weak when scratched parallel to the vertical axis and harder if scratched across that axis. It is usually found in a pale blue color- sometimes in deeper blue or white specimens- and it also has an attractive pearly sheen on it's flat surfaces. Viewed from the side, a piece of Kyanite resembles sheets of thin paper laid on top of each other, rather like a book. It has a tendency to splinter along the vertical axis, which means it is not often set in jewlery, and needs to be handled and stored with care.
    In Yoga & Meditation
The distinctive structure of Kyanite makes it a useful tool in crystal healing as a conductor of energy, working like a channel to transmute negativity out of the system and allow positive energy in. It opens up new avenues of awareness and enables deeper levels to be accessed in meditation. It allows energy to be in a constant flow, moving through any blockages with ease; it is a classic crystal for letting go, releasing old patterns that no longer serve us.
I know crystal healing since I started doing yoga.

  • @ralphralpherson9441

Damn, yall were SO CLOSE to the main kyanite mine, you must have stopped just a quarter mile short of the real deal. I've been to the Ray several times, also once hiked up to the "Little Ray" which was an extended working up the hill and to the right, and once I also hiked to the very top to the Mas Celo Kyanite mine, got me a few gorgeous pieces (including my semi-famous) "kyanite football". You guys got "nearish" to the main kyanite mine, but if you want the "holy crap" pieces, you have to go around the summet, through the trees past an old dilapidated trailer, and you'll find the mouth of the Mas Celo adit. In the winter time, it forms ice stalagtites on the roof and and "goblets" on the floor. (stalagmites that melt a hole in the top, and collect water like a little frozen chalice, its gaddamn magical, as the water drips from the ceiling, and drips into all the little ice chalices, it plays a song). If I ever run into you guys down thataways, Ill hike to the Mas Celo with you and show you the REAL source of the kyanite. (The walls have blue crystals as big as your hand) Based on the impressive kyanite you found, you were CLOSE to the Mas Celo.
Here are some photos from a local geology club's site, shows the adit and the inside of the actual kyanite mine: www.mcrocks.com/ftr09-1/KosickiFebruary2009.html
If I had to guess, yall were on the dirtbike trails near the mine or actually on the old mine road where they used to haul the kyanite out on trucks. You were definitely within a half to quarter mile of the real deal. IF you would like me to send photos of kyanite from INSIDE the Mas Celo, hit me up: rmkearney@yahoo.com
But I haven't been active with rock collecting since around 2015-2016 and your video REALLY made me want to go back. Did you know you were also less than 20 miles from one of the only EMERALD producing sites in NC? Next time you are in the area you should check out the Crabtree emerald mine (no, NOT the salted place on the way to the crabtree, but the legit real crabtree!). It used to be managed by the MAGMA club, not sure if they still control access or not, but you basically sign a waiver at the Emerald Village site (tourist trap mine on the way) and pay $20 and then you can go dig for legit emeralds in the tailings of the Crabtree. I have found actual gem grade emerald only twice there, but both times I jumped in the air and celebrated like Yukon Cornelius.
The Ray mine is not only a fantastic geological site, but also just a beautiful place to be. I always found it to be so peaceful and love being there. Dangit, not I've gotta figure out a way to get down there this spring! ((after the winter freeze-thaw and spring storms, the creek really gives up the goods~!))
