Hi, may I ask how you wired the keyboard in. It's just that I can't see how I would power the unit if the keyboard isn't battery operated? I don't use a DAW as I prefer hardware. Thanks for the video
The USB connection was providing power and midi control routed from the keyboard via a DAW (this arrangement causing the annoying USB high pitched noise you can hear in this vid). I now have the keyboard hooked in via the din midi in (with a normal midi cable) and USB power via an external usb psi and the noise has gone.
It uses USB-C and it works fine from any normal USB power adapter I have tried it with (I use it with a power adaptor and the midi DIN in to avoid any issues with USB noise like I had in this video). You can also use a USB power bank for more portability.
Very early days yet but initial thoughts are it’ll fill a hole between my full fat analogues, where you want a different texture only hybrid can provide… need to get used to the paraphonic action though, takes a bit of getting your head round the voicing. Want to see how much tweaking you can do when making your own patches before I give a full verdict. Hard to go wrong for the price though - analogue filter, 16 oscillators, 4 voices quasi-polyphonic, chorus… even if you only use it for a few sounds it’s still worth it given how small it is too.
Yes it really is an awesome synth, very deceptive given the size and price. I think I could do a whole album with this thing alone (if I could handle all the multitracking haha)
I also have sausage fingers and dodgy eyes 😄and the are totally usable, if a bit fiddly. I absolutely would be tempted to use an external midi controller for a proper live jam though. Yes, most parameters respond to midi CCs (thought not the mix envelope controls at present, I'm hoping that will change). But yes, you can use an external midi controller for cutoff, resonance, chorus controls, LFO parameters, amp and filter envelopes, oscillator tunings etc
I’m not sure but I don’t think so. I’ll check next time I’m in the studio! It does recognise velocity and responds accordingly but I switched off velocity sensitivity on my keyboard to make the playing a bit more consistent when knocking out lots of patches in a row.
Great demo! Question. DIN for midikeyboard and usb-C for power. . .how do you get the sound out? To an amp for live or to record in a daw. I don't see in specs any other way to get the sound out 😮😮
Hi! With more budget does a wave table synth from Modal or Arturia (or Korg, or Hydrasynth) would be « way » better or does the VS mini could be as good?
I think it’s a misunderstanding from people on how it works - the joystick signal resets to centre with each new note so you’ll only notice it’s manual use on a long sustained note really (this was also how it was on the original Prophet VS from what I hear). If you want specific joystick movements as part of the patch you use the mix envelope controls. Might be nice to have an option to override that functionality in a future update I agree. Might try and do a video looking at these and other functions might be a bit confused about because it does take a bit of getting used to.
@@witchdoctorwise Thanks for the explanation. I was under the impression that I could leave the joystick in one of the cardinal points, and the opposite point would be silenced. I realise now that I have to keep moving the joystick to get that effect.
It has a lot of cc controls but there are a few missing from the list in the manual - including the oscillator mix envelope. I’m hoping they add everything as it would help make a proper editor. Can you select different cc outputs from the wind synth? The pro-vs has cc controls for the filter, lfo, envelopes, waveform etc
@@witchdoctorwise yes the Roland AE-30 has a mod matrix for external MIDI CCs and it has a bunch of real-time controls feeding that matrix. Success depends on being able to get round the synth's envelope (via aftertouch or real-time filter cutoff) and whether the synth handles legato properly.
What, you got one already? I ordered mine from Thomann as soon it was up, but it looks like 2 more weeks.. and I thought Thomann was like official reseller :/
The official UK reseller Andertons got it first this time for some reason (with the Pro-800 I was on the other side of this fence as Thomann got it first :) )
@@witchdoctorwise Thanks for the reply. I was hoping to use it with a mini keyboard I have (Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol) but that only has a USB connection. So that option is not on the cards, I reckon.
@@berniarmstrong I believe Behringer are planning to release a cheap converter that allows use of USB midi from a standalone keyboard (such devices do exist already but cost a little bit)
I connected it via my computer (USB-C from computer, routed from USB external keyboard in my DAW) but I could have connected it directly via the MIDI in. I’d like to use the din MIDI in future to isolate and remove the digital noise you tend to get with USB direct from computer (that you can hear in the background of this recording unfortunately).
@@Civilian2.0 it all works really well! I used an external usb psu today and the din midi in and all of the digital noise is gone, sounds really clean and nice. Enjoy!
Yes, I have had this with other usb powered synths before like the Nymphes when powering via the computer. I am going to use a separate USB supply when I get the chance and I’m certain it will stop this by the next vid.
@@macola467 maybe I’ll look into it. It’s my setup though, it does with all my usb synths if plugged into the computer. Maybe because I have a USB soundcard? Probably wouldn’t be a problem in many peoples setups.
This was a bit of an unknown before release but it’s actually half and half which is unusual - the amp envelopes are fully polyphonic but the filter envelope is paraphonic (it either plays once until all keys are released or retriggers with each extra key press depending on how you set it). This is actually a lot more playable than full paraphonic (all voices sharing one amp envelope) in my view given the complex oscillator sound anyway so the filter isn’t the be all and end all. Obviously a full filter envelope per voice would be even better but for the price that might be a bit unrealistic (would need four filter circuits rather than one)
I'll be honest, behringer is about the only brand I plan to buy a synth from. As a guitarist, I'd like a synth, but I don't need one. Behringer is perfect for that niche, in my opinion at least. As long as I can pretend to be Rick Wright and play something from dsotm, why buy a 16k synth i don't even understand? That's why I like behringer. Reverence to the old school with decent prices and modern ease of use.
Honestly, the sound of the patches alone (without any dive into its control capabilities) remind me of the old cheap Casio and Yamaha consumer keyboards sold at Radio Shack and Sears.
Gonna have to hard disagree on that personally 😮 presets are never best way to experience a synth but my next vid is going to look at some patches of my own I agree it can do a lot more
It is bad in this vid because of my setup (I rushed this vid when I first got it). However the noise goes completely when I use an external usb power source rather than powering from my computer.
I’m not too familiar with the original but I’m sure it is no replacement given the huge difference in specs. More of a mini tribute. Seems well worth it in its own right though, for that kind of 80s-ish hybrid sound in a tiny package.
I'll keep my Arturia Prophet vst and go with that. Sorry but this is like a cheap home keyboard that was made in the 90s. I have my suspicions that thomann are going around asking why nobody is buying this.
They have updated it since this and the new oscillator modes are closer from what I gather (it certainly sounds a lot better, though I think it sounded decent to start with). I'm not saying it sounds identical but it certainly sounds really good now.
It’s an under $100 Synth. Worth every dollar and has lots of sonic capabilities. Did anyone really think it was going to sound like the Original, jeese get a life!
Running through presets doesn’t really showcase anything about the capabilities of this little synth, not compared to the official demos they released. The fact that you put “I think” at the end shows you’re also uncertain. I’m on the fence, but plenty more mini synths coming, CS next I think.
No I agree this was just supposed to be a very quick look through the presets for the curious rather than a comprehensive representation of what the synth is capable of - hoping to have a deeper dive asap. Having more of a play today and it seems like loads of sound creation possibilities under the hood.
@@darkteckno The way it operates it is not an issue, because its action is reset when pressing a note, and so even if it falls dow. If you dont touch it, the joystick has no contribution. I'm now doing it via the DIN midi in on the top right of the front panel. The chorus & filter sound nice. For the price of a soft synth (or less). Amazing.
