      I got four of the new Dublo versions but got good deals on them all, a LOT less than the RRP and paid for it by selling off other locos in my collection. No way i could have afforded it otherwise.

      @speleokeir those dublo versions are beautiful - if I saw them discounted, I'd definitely try and get one, especially sir nigel gresley and mallard

    Wow, what a great collection to see on the layout. I nearly got to drive Bittern IRL by unfortunately she failed an hour beforehand. Gutted. Congrats on 1000 subs, lots more to come I’m certain. I have a few questions for the Q&A so feel free to pick the best. 1) if you could have any model for your layout, what would it be and why? 2) what do you see as the biggest challenge for modelling British railways in South Africa? 3) was there a moment you can pinpoint when you caught the model railway bug? 4) what has been the most enjoyable thing about building your layout so far? 5) what is the thing about the hobby that you find the most challenging / intimidating / frustrating?

    • @Proper_Chuffed

      Wow! You nearly drove Bittern?! That would have been an amazing experience! Thanks for your questions Martyn. Still trying to coax Annie into a video for the Q&A :P

    Congrats on the 1,000 subscribers. Extremely well deserved! Your channel is quality..
    This was a very apt way to celebrate the milestone: the magnificent A4. As you may recall, I have a soft spot for the A4, owning an example in each livery they wore during their working lives. As you say, it's a shame Hornby decided to milk it a little. Nevertheless, it's a superb collection. Hornby at its best.
    I was lucky enough to ride behind Union of South Africa some years ago, but it's owner is on record saying he has no plans to return it to the mainline, so the number of usable A4s is dwindling. BUT, there are rumours that maybe, just maybe, Mallard will be returned to steam for the centenary of it's record-breaking run, in 2038.
    It's a shame that both Australia & NZ declined offers of donations of the eponymous locos.

    • @Proper_Chuffed
      @Proper_Chuffed  7 месяцев назад +1

      You have quite the collection, let alone quite the A4 collection! I do think they were a little naughty on the reruns, but it's still magnificent as a set, and as you said, Hornby at its best. Beautiful runners.
      I am surprised to hear they turned down the locos in Australia and NZ, odd. Wow, given its status, to see Mallard running again would be special. Better book my tickets for 2038 then!
      We were never offered Union of SA, probably for the best as it would have been very neglected here in SA.
      Thanks for your support, the 1k milestone wouldn't have been possible without you!

      @Proper_Chuffed You're building a brand!
      No idea why Aust & NZ declined their eponymous A4s: perhaps they were worried about the maintenance & running costs, or it was something to do with moving on from Empire? Whatever the reason, I think history has proven it a mistake.

    During this video, you mentioned that Bittern still had its original Tender. Bittern is in the one-to-one collection at Hornby Margate Center. During W11 one of the 35 A4 built was stored in a Loco Roundhouse which took a direct hit by a Geman bomb. This destroyed the A4, but the Tender was not badly damaged, so it was repaired and put behind Bittern. In Margate, it has double Tenders. Martin. (Thailand) My Channel is Yorkdale LNER, my first video.

    I'd say Dominion of Canada is my favourite preserved A4, because I like the bizarre sight of a bell on a British engine. But one thing's for sure; this six-pack of A4s is far beyond my budget, and I've settled for just two examples of the class for my collection. In any case, I still congratulate you for reaching 1k subscribers.
    The two A4s I've got are 4468 'Mallard' and 60013 'Dominion of New Zealand' (they're both Hornby models because I don't like the Bachmann Branchline rendition). 60013 was a rare / lucky find on Clark Railworks, and I also want to get 4489 'Dominion of Canada' eventually.
    As for Q&A questions, I can only think of one - Do you like to watch trains in real life?

    • @Proper_Chuffed
      @Proper_Chuffed  8 месяцев назад

      Thank you for watching mate, I’m not sure if you’ve disclosed your name on your videos 😅 It makes a lot of sense that you picked up Dominion of New Zealand 😂 she’s a lovely example. Of the A4s I think my personal favourite is Bittern, not sure why exactly, but I’ve always been pulled to it 🤷‍♂️
      Thanks for the question 😊 will respond in the QA

    With the price tag of this set being well beyond the average collector, I came up with a much more affordable alternative: Corgi Rail Legends released all six locos in static resin models. They are roughly TT scale (1:120) and are remarkably faithful reproductions of these iconic beasts, given their reasonable prices. I feel Hornby tried to cash in on the addition of a branded display case and commemorative box art with these models, and while they sold out overseas within months, I know of four sets readily available in Gauteng. Very nice to see them all together in this video, Hylton. Congrats on your membership milestone too.

    • @Proper_Chuffed
      @Proper_Chuffed  7 месяцев назад

      Agreed, if you are doing displays, I would definitely go with the Corgi stuff, I would think it a shame that these never run, they are built to and if I owned it, I would be running it as often as I could. Thanks so much for popping in Neil, keep well sir!

    great video , sad to say the Domininion of Canada has been shoved off to a manky shed at the EXPORAIL museum in Montreal and is covered in bird droppings and muck now, a sad way to go

    Lovely locos, the 10th anniversary set is available now, lucky enough to pick up Dominion of Canada and Dwight D Eisenhower at a bargain price, this version is diecast so probably better than the 2013 release. I f you can get hold of one you will not be dissapointed.

    I believe I recall you saying you will miss Hattons as an overseas modeller (like myself), What about Hattons made it valuable to you - if you could ask Rails of Sheffield to do one thing that Hattons did what would it be?

    • @speleokeir
      @speleokeir 8 месяцев назад +1

      My guess is their trunk service. Lots of overseas modelers loved it as it made a big difference in postage costs, etc.
