Whenever I listen to this song, I interpret it as this. The setting starts off in the summer, in a private wooden cabin rented by a few friends. So this guy Brian is doing push ups in the morning, and the girl (who was sort of like a one night stand thing) seems him. ''And in this moment I was pretty pleased with the person I was pretending to be'' - I interpret it as he is adapting this other persona to who he actually is because he wants to look cool and tough in front of the girl, since he wants to leave this lasting impression by which she can remember him. ''When she asks me why they call me Brian Instead of Steven'' - He gave her a fake name the night before because, again, he wants to adapt a different persona. But his friends who he is staying in the cabin with forgot to call him by his 'fake' name and accidentally call him Brian, so he has to come up with an excuse as to why. ''I got a whole list of reasons why I should stop before I start But the only thing stronger than my head is my heart'' - By this point, he's still trying to act aloof and cool 'stop before I start', but he realises that he actually likes this girl, heart being a metaphor for his developing feelings. ''I got them bad boy blues I feel hypnotized by the way you move And those big brown eyes'' - The chorus is just his inner thoughts or his nostalgia from which he is looking back at the past thinking the summer fling was one of the best things he's experienced. 'Bad boy blues' may refer to his persona of being the tough cool boy. ''Yea, that would be great That would be beach house living Every night, rest of our lives, you and me We could go swimming, swimming'' - He wishes he could spend the rest of his life just hanging out with this girl, having fun. So, all in all, it's about a guy who adapted this tough boy character to get the girl (which he did), maybe he thought it was fun or because he is bored of his everyday life routine, and ended up having feelings for this girl but he couldn't be with her - so he looks back in the past with this sense of nostalgia and wishes he could be there forever.
That's very cool, that's what I like about tfb songs, they are written in a way you can come up with all sorts of stories to interpret them and they all make sense and feel relatable
