please ignore the cat hair on my shoulder... i hugged Pancake before filming this and didn't even notice... whoops😿💚 ALSO, i may or may not have drank a full bottle of red wine while watching this... CHEERS!!
This film is the most creative personification of self hatred I've seen in years. Like the dilemma of "Why can't I be like that again?" Vs. "I will never be like that." I was wincing in my seat in the theater.
It was very notable to me how Elizabeth/Sue never had any feminine supports through the movie, they only ever had men ogling them and telling them their value, it really adds another layer of heartbreak for me how alone she was. She could’ve been saved if she only had a friend I swear
"i love how unrealistic this film is" THANK YOU i keep seeing people be like "uhm akshully this would never happen" and its like yeah no shit girl stop treating that trait as a mistake and join me in enjoying original screenplays that are unabashedly being fantastical and creative
exacly, people just don't understand art, it's like saying "this van Gogh painting looks unrealistic so it's bad" That's not how it works, you can like or hate whatever you want, but just stop comparing art to real life, especially when said art clearly doesn't aim for realism.
11:20 the symbolism for the corridor being so gross and sketchy and the room being so pristine and perfect is exactly the purpose of the substance. Elisabeth (they’re insinuating) is old and decrepit on the outside. While her inner Sue is pristine and perfect inside.
If I may add- I took it as showing the sketchy things women have done in the pursuit of beauty... Backalley butt injections, traveling to other countries for cheaper plastic surgery done by questionable doctors, uncertified 'botox parties', tiktok dentistry... the pursuit of youth and beauty will take you to strange places...
One added layer in the movie is that Demi Moore herself was relentlessly ridiculed a couple of years ago when she had quite an extreme plastic surgery and it didn't settle right away. And she came back looking fabulous - in a film that IS about the same issue!
I think you have Demi confused with Courtney Cox, I know Demi’s admitted to some light procedures, but none that has drastically altered her appearance
something i haven't seen anyone really catch onto is that we know she was an actress when she was younger, but we don't know a lot about Elisabeth's life, so i immediately took her being able to competently build a door as evidence that she might come from a working class background. also tiling and doors aren't terribly hard to do so it's something she could have learned easily at a young age plus we see that she is a capable cook, too. one of the tragic elements of this film is that she thinks being on the screen is the only thing she can do, but she clearly has real, actionable skills that she could rely on.
Fun fact!! Margaret Qualley was wearing prosthetic boobs while playing Sue. So, when we as viewers are watching Sue's "perfect" body we're seeing an actress wearing prosthetics bcs that body type is literally so unattainable that not even THE Margaret Qualley reaches the standard that the movie tries to critique (plus, a whole lot of hair extensions too). So, Margaret had to be "glamed up" to play Sue. It serves as an interesting observation on how not even the younger, more "conventionally attractive" actress fits the beauty standard perfectly (and honestly, WHO does????)
The fact that Elisasue actually seems to feel happy with herself, kind of like…. in a state of existential bliss, and everyone else is reacting with horror and disgust at her existence is just, everything in love in horror
the way I sat in the theatre going through all stages of grief bc I felt so seen as a woman. the hatred you create for yourself because you're never seen as enough by the world only for the complete 180 to hit me at the end because what was THAT
I think it should be recognized that the movie also comments on female generational relationships. Think about it, older women are often portrayed as evil villains in fairy tales (stepmother, witch, etc.) who seek to suppress or exploit their younger counter parts. Young girls are taught very early to distrust older women. I think this is a travesty since both parties can learn from each other.
Well I don't know old dudes are portrayed as evil often as well EX: sorcerers, lichs, most demons, vampires, the devil himself. Though current portrayals of said characters are different and varied now much like almost all things in fantasy. (I don't even fully disagree with you I just think your example wasn't that good)
Right even as soon as the funky finger comes in to play everyone starts calling her a witch almost every reactor and it could be just an old person's finger in general... there's symbolism on so many levels in this movie and how we treat things that age or they call old chrone. ALSO an avatar for not being in your own self we are all doing an internet otherwise using her other body as avatar not loving self having own self life. Or even how EVERYONE like fred f*ck off then soon as she is desperate he is seen as nice guy. How do we know he could be biggest creep, also Don't just settle message in here I think. And can't put self love worth only in how others look at. Mashed thoughts but you certainly catch what mean lol.
"Do we wanna take the Substance?" Niall, you already would be someone else's duplicate created by the Substance. Minus the lack of self-control, of course.
It was destined to fail BECAUSE she didn't love herself, too. Splitting into the best version of yourself is going to breed more and more contempt for the part of you that you're avoiding.
Man I've watched a ton of reactions and you're the first reactor to know the deeper meaning about her being the same person immediately. Loved this reaction! 💜
That teeth scene hit me so hard ngl, years of eating disorders really fucked up my teeth bc of acid corrosion and where i live dental isnt covered by healthcare 😢 to all the teens out there it’s not worth it ❤
Had tooth trouble myself! That nerve pain is the worst... and when you have a bad tooth, the urge sometimes IS to aggravate and poke the tongue in there and make it worse. So I totally got Sue pulling them out the moment she felt them loosen.
A couple of things came to mind while watching this movie. First, This filmmaker is very influenced by David Cronenberg and I think of Videodrome, The Fly and Dead Ringers with a splash of David Lynch with The Elephant Man. Secondly, It's so true to life how we give the young, hot it girl the keys to the kingdom and when they reach a certain age, we cast them aside like an old glove. Third, This also brings to mind the Batman villain Clayface as depicted in The Animated Series in that he was an actor who suffers a horrible accident and is permanently disfigured only to be given a cosmetic that creates instantaneous results. Only when the cosmetic is misused does it create horrible side effects resulting into a being that has the ability to transform. Lastly, It also brings to mind Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Grey and Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Also, If it were shot in black and white and released in the 1950's, It would pass as an episode of The Twilight Zone.
The way I love this film so much, I've seen it five times since it has come out and have watched a dozen reaction videos, and I can honestly say your reaction is my absolute favorite!! So much fun, and your commentary is still thoughtful
11:52 IM SAYING OK the first time i watched this i was like "oh no, she doesnt even have one good friend to queen out with, her depression is truly all-consuming"
Niall you are just absolutely the best!! Can always always count on you to have entertaining and introspective videos, you are just the friend on screen that everyone needs. You're a doll! Loved this reaction as well as all the others!!!! (Also despite how insane and grotesque the scene was, Sue smashing Elisabeth's face into the mirror was everything... Literally beating yourself up in the mirror... This movie is so incredibly done)
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you feel as though you’re watching movies and TV with a friend. That’s my ultimate goal!! For people to connect and feel comfortable and enjoy along with me as though we are watching things truly together. Thank you for your kind comment 🫶🏼💚
I totally get you the shots of Margaret were insane if I had that body I’d be doing same lol they used prosthetics though so that made me feel a bit better
How i see it is the self hate is so... apparent and significant, it manifests like this between Sue and Elisabeth. One notable example is the food and how it affects both of them
9:01 10:12 17:57 21:05 26:42 26:55 29:34 (this reaction was just funny) 32:52 49:16 …you get it…. You just get it! Your reaction is the best reaction I’ve seen so far on this film. You should do “Anora” next. I’d think you’d live for it 👍🏽
I loved the Infinity Pool reference you threw in, Mia Goth being a badass! If you haven't yet reacted to her X trilogy (X, Pearl, MaXXXine), you definitely should! It was that trilogy where i fell in love with Mia. Hope to see these films on the channel soon!

BEST movie of 2024 by far. I saw it twice in the theatre and it was amazing and so impactful on the big screen, all the colour and sound design and everything. Literally 10/10. It's become one of my fav films ever very quickly. I know horror movies are always snubbed but this one BETTER get some awards
'This film is about to become my entire personality' SAME! I'm obsessed with this film. Also your reaction to the '3 months later' text was mine as well. Also, no one ever talks about Fred, even though he has very little screentime. I think he's an interesting character because, at first glance, it seems like he's going to be like all the other men in this film. As in, he seems a little pushy, immediately commenting on her looks ('I still think you're the most beautiful girl in the whole wide world'). However, when it comes to the phone call, it seems to imply that he genuinely wants to know her and is just socially awkward. I've definitely met people like that before where I've put my guide up and misjudged them.
Absolutely loved your reaction and especially your end chat with recognition of intersectionality in the messages of this film. I agree; there are certain areas in which we can’t at all relate *exactly* but can absolutely see each other.
4:55 OK so fun story. The first time I saw this movie was actually on a first date with somebody. And when it got to this part in the movie, I shit you not I almost left this man there I almost threw up in my popcorn bucket and left this man in the theater. I wanted to peel the skin off my body. They were so wrong for this. But it’s perfect.
I keep watching reactions because I'm truly so in love with this movie and *everytime* I catch a new detail... Like the fact that she is n°503 > Odd numbers . Or the five point star that she was , to a nobody , to three people. Or the fact that much like for auditions , at the end of the day , if there is something to sell , you are nothing but a number .
I was addicted to heroin/opioids for years, but I still can't stand needles. I'm from the East Coast of the USA, so it was all powdered when I started, and believe me when I say I was in for a rude awakening when I moved to Colorado and all I could find was tar.... Obviously I don't recommend either, my point is just that I couldn't even fuck with needles when that was the "easiest" and most viable option back while I was still doing that shit. I don't even like getting blood work done at the doctor's
What did Fred do to you man? Hes like the one guy who's actually a good person in the entire movie. Bros probably just judging him based on looks, which is incredibly ironic considering the story
Loved your reaction!!! It was so much fun rewatching with you!! This is easily one of the best movies of 2024!!! I'm glad you were hyping Demi Moore so much!!! She is a goddess!!! And she was so vulnerable for this movie, absolutely fantastic!!
First time ever seeing one of your videos and wow your reaction was amazing. I felt so bad when you said you did not like body horror but you held up really well. Looking forward to seeing more!
No way I just finally happened to watch this movie last night after forgetting about it for months, and you post a reaction the next day! I wish my timing was always this good XD
It should and good luck to the movie buuut there is no shot in hell older Academy voters will get through this movie, or anyone who doesn’t like body horror in the Academy, that’s just the truth
28:20 I couldn't disagree more with you (respectfully)! To say "you can do so much better than Fred" when you really don't know anything about him shows exactly the mindset that's basically the root of Elizabeth's problems - people judging people based on physical appearances and superficial minutiae! To say something like that under the given conditions is pretty much buying into to the whole worthy-because-beautiful-/-unworthy-because-not-as-beautiful bias. It further cements the "trap" people, who's social status is mostly based in their physical attractiveness, are in - people are only interested in you because of your beauty, and only people as beautiful as yourself deserve getting to know you. With a mindset like that there is almost no way for anyone to reach someone like Elizabeth on a meaningful and emotionally healthy level, trapping them in perpetual, self-sustaining loneliness ... as perfectly depicted in this jewel of a movie.
Oooooh, I totally see your point! I was meaning (and I cut it out for some reason) that I found Fred a bit too overbearing and pushy. He seemed more like ‘stalker’ vibes at first. So when I said that she could do better, yes I meant superficially because of his looks (which is bad on my part tbh), but also because he seemed a bit too domineering. But I totally see your point, it’s very interesting how complex this film is. The layers it has and how you can easily fall into the trap that the characters are also putting themselves into without realising! Thanks for your comment 💚
Well...I was curious about the movie...and I am SO glad I watched this reaction instead of watching it by myself. I never would've made it passed the original needle 😅
Ever since my accident my bladder is shit lol so we were driving back from Texas and there was only one restroom for miles, sorry can’t do that and the women’s was closed! I waited and went f it and went into the men’s, no fs given 😂 I came out and there was a line of women still waiting and once they saw me come out a few of them went into the men’s as well 😂
When I watched this movie with my friends I ended up quietly sobbing for much of the last quarter of the movie. My friends enjoyed the camp horror aspects while the tragedy of the film hit me in a completely different way. Had to go online to see if anyone else cried watching it!
please ignore the cat hair on my shoulder... i hugged Pancake before filming this and didn't even notice... whoops😿💚 ALSO, i may or may not have drank a full bottle of red wine while watching this... CHEERS!!

Or any kind of friend tbh ...
Fred is already there as her validation and support.

One added layer in the movie is that Demi Moore herself was relentlessly ridiculed a couple of years ago when she had quite an extreme plastic surgery and it didn't settle right away. And she came back looking fabulous - in a film that IS about the same issue!
Exactly. I even see Elisasue as a symbol for bad plastic surgery.
I think you have Demi confused with Courtney Cox, I know Demi’s admitted to some light procedures, but none that has drastically altered her appearance
@@Jprager i think they're referring to her breast augmentation surgery
Demi had a great deal of work done and she's at that age where it won't hold up for much longer.

I agree with you. This movie is a 10 out of 10! Gore and all - btw - Demi Moore deserves an Oscar for her performance!
THE SUBSTANCE is a grand, audacious
masterpiece---a triumph of pure cinema.
This was so funny thank youuuu I was laughing out loud with your reactions!!!
What did Fred do to you man?
Hes like the one guy who's actually a good person in the entire movie. Bros probably just judging him based on looks, which is incredibly ironic considering the story
The best movie this year definitly
14:42 when i first watched this i said very quietly and very scared “ok body tea” 😂😂😂
The world aligned for us 🫶🏼
Make Prince of Egypt your next animated film!
AND YOU DID IT AT MY BIRTHDAY DINNER 😂😂😂😂😂
If this movie doesn’t win an Oscar
I will go on a riot!
It should and good luck to the movie buuut there is no shot in hell older Academy voters will get through this movie, or anyone who doesn’t like body horror in the Academy, that’s just the truth
I enjoyed watching your reaction so much and I notice that kitty is exhausted in the background!🥰
She’s sooooo over me and just wants to sleep 😭😂
🤣I felt like right at 4:07 we knew we were in for a wild ride with this film
This is the funniest commentary for The Substance I have seen yet :-D
Omg WASHED UP! This is my 28th reaction video after watching if fully and that just dawned on me!
TEAAAA im so happy to see you this morning!! Never to early for a drink ;p
Your reaction was everything 💀😂
11:51 OMG!!!!! I literally said the same thing!! I’m screaming right now!! 😂
oh I am locked IN
Absolutely love your reaction to this film. Subscribed 💕
Ever since my accident my bladder is shit lol so we were driving back from Texas and there was only one restroom for miles, sorry can’t do that and the women’s was closed! I waited and went f it and went into the men’s, no fs given 😂 I came out and there was a line of women still waiting and once they saw me come out a few of them went into the men’s as well 😂
Even when viewed through your reaction to it, this film sort of makes me want to cry.
It’s wild and crazy and insane… but at the heart of it, it’s terribly tragic !!
When I watched this movie with my friends I ended up quietly sobbing for much of the last quarter of the movie. My friends enjoyed the camp horror aspects while the tragedy of the film hit me in a completely different way. Had to go online to see if anyone else cried watching it!
Finally people are noticing this movie
this was a triiipppp
12:07. The damn sound effect. 😂
The fact that the substance use for military or supersoldier not for beuty standard that's why sue looks superhuman
La actuación de Demi Moore es de otro nivel, merece el Oscar incontestable.🙌
Oh you have to watch Smile 2 man! You will absolutely love the sequel and it's even better than the first Smile!
30:35 lmao I feel like if The Substance doesn't become your personality did you even watch it???
