This classis at 40 years old got an Audiophile treatment by MOFI with the release of their SACD (Sterio Hybrid)
Comparing this SACD to the Original CD Release provided a surprise or two.

I have the MOFI SACD and the original CD from 1986 (2nd print), and I can say that the new Thriller 40 48kHz/24bit stream on Qubus sound better by FAR! Yes, dynamic range is lower by 3dB, but the dynamics and details are far more pronounced.
It was fantastically produced from the original. Classic album from all aspects. Greatest album of all time!
Kept mine sealed and downloaded the .flac
I have a 35•8P Japan for Japan and the Japan for USA 35•8P. Happy about this release for those that don't want to spring for the 35•8P disc.
Thank you for the detailed explanation ❤
Thankfully your wife round the CD... ^^
I have heard the original CD before and the tape.
But since now I have the original vinyl, I really have no intentions of getting the SACD release or the Japanese Bluspec cd.
Thank you for an honest review for this CD.
Thanks for your comments!
Hello David. Well, i've got both versions here. The CD version i've got is a german press. Both, the CD and the newest SACD have a dynamic range of 13db overall as albums. But: some tracks have +1 or even +2db more DR on the CD. The best example is Human Nature (on CD DR14, on SACD DR12). One more thing that i've noticed is that all the CD tracks have more kick on the kickdrum andmore treble than the SACD. The SACD is mastered more warmer and as you noticed in your video it has more nuances of acuracy in the sound details.
The mastering on SACD is in fact realy great.
But the question is: does it make any sence to spent about 39 Euros (this is the price for it here in Germany) for the SACD ?
Well, the answer of mine is: absolutely NO!
Go out there, take a look at the Bay and if you spot an old used CD out from the 80s, buy it for 3-5 Euros because the CD Version sounds still great after all these years.
Thanks for your commentary. Spot on to my findings (without all the great numeric db proof).
It’s consistent with the One-Step LP vs. Original Vinyl LP experience in essence. The OG is a great value and a dance monster. The new master gives more nuance if you’re in a detailed listening mode.
Cheers!!!
I have the hybrid SACD and the 40th Anniv silver case CD, and i have listened to all 3 versions. The SACD is softer and analog-sounding, with very spatial sound from all the instruments. I heard nuanced sounds which I had never heard before. The CD side of this MoFi edition is really soft and lacks a punch. The 40th Anniv edition is very loud with a high treble; very typical of recent "loudness" remastered CDs. Anyway, it's fun to collect and compare all versions. In fact, I always purchase many versions of the same albums just to compare.
I own copies of Thriller on Original CD with Pre-Emphasis and Original vinyl.
They both sound amazing with great dynamic range, punch and energy. I suggest purchasing the original cd, rip the cd at slowest speed with De-emphasis detection and error correction active and play the album via usb. The album sounds fantastic this way. Or just play the cd or vinyl of course.
Good to see you back in the saddle DB. Nice info! Also caught that Texas-influenced Half Price Books reference (founded in Dallas, if I recall). Happy New Year to you and your family ✌🏻
Thanks Buddie! Getting back in the saddle for 2023 :)
2015 cd..stand alone reissue is quite good. Its not too compressed, good bass and easy to listen to.
Hi David! Looking forward to this!
"Original CD" is confusing, 1st US Press sounds better, because there's a lot OG CD (one in UK, one in US, on in Japan etc. different masterings).
Thanks will fix in title at least
Cd from the eighties and nineties focussed on loudness and Bass reflex as you rightly stated it was more focused on the Dance rhythm timing beats that not the same thing as getting a wide stage as on a SaCd and most SACD sound softer and confoundingly more analogue sounding .additional if you are not playing your sacd player via i2s to dac that is i2s capable that can unpack the data your not getting the whole story.
Very interesting! I think I’m going to get the SACD
I guess it’s a matter of what you want. Thriller was meant to be a dance album. On the other hand, Quincy Jones is an excellent producer so, yes, you know his production is going to be musically rich and detailed. Is it worth the 100 bucks? To each his own.
Are you by any chance related to Dennis Hopper? You kind of look like him, and you definitely sound like him.
No that I know of! I am adopted, so you never know :)
Cd player option in a car is a major factor I use on which car to purchase. Ha.
Absolutely true for me too. My wife’s 2019 Golf has one in the glovebox. Not ideal but at least it’s there! Thanks for watching and commenting :)
The original CD sounds better. That's the CD I have. 🙂 The first batch released (Japan) had pre-emphasis.
When you asked me, I told you that I did like the new Mofi SACD, but after listening to it yesterday through my home theater system, I feel that it was a waste of money. When played in the regular CD mode, that sounds better than in the SACD mode to me. I would love to get one of the earlier SACD's mastered by Bernie Grundman. You know that Bernie started with the master tapes. Even made a couple of decades earlier, I'd bet they'd blow the Mofi SACD into the dirt. Yep, the original CD sounds better to me. The only thing that might have made the Mofi version better is if it were multi-channel.
Thanks for the update. I would love a multichannel give the complex mix.
@@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion There is a Dolby Atmos mix on Apple Music. I still think the Mofi SACD sounds better.
You can have a billion samples per second it will not make it sound better that 44.1khz.
Thank god you didn’t compare the 2014 Tom Coyne remaster/reissue of Thriller on CD. Yikes. That would lose big time to both the SACD and original CD release. I can’t say anything about the 40th anniversary CD deluxe set, but if I were to bet I’d say the MOFI disc would kill it.
Anyhow. My favorite is the MOFI release. It is a work of art. I love it. More space and nuance in the overall sound.
The loudness wars has killed the dynamic range of these later releases. Making the sound normalised and making it crazy loud, killing the dynamic range. They have killed Bruce Swediens great work of using very little compression and preserving the dynamic range.
IVE TESTED OUT BOTH AS WELL. PREFER THE OG CD TO THE MOFIMOFI WAS MUCH BETTER DURING THE STAN RICKER DAYS THAN NOW. ALSO THERE WAS A PREVIOUSLY RELEASED SACD MASTERED BY BERNIE G
Thanks I wonder how the BG SACD compares?!?
@@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion the OG cd sounds best. and between the OG lp and CD i prefer the LP. i did order the 1 step but when i found out abt the digital step involved i cancelled my order. :(
@@ceejaydeesoozaa the OG Lp have lot of sibilants...how could it be better than the first japanese cd?
@@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion The Bernie Grundman SACD wasn’t very good. Mastered louder than Scarlet Book standards would later be, has more compression than necessary, a ton of treble, almost no bass, and according to most sounds no different than the 1st US pressing.

Above, comparing the dynamic range for a 1982 original release CD to a Qobuz 23/11/99 release from Epic which
is a 24 bit/176.4 KHz download. Don't buy the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab SACD version as it's tamed, looses it's original impact.
Definitely don't buy Thriller 40, the sound has been normalised, the dynamic range crushed and recording made crazy loud!
