When they do this live, Tim sings about smoking and drinking and says during his verse, "don't do that kids." Then he sings aboyt running from the cops and says, "Don't do that either kids." It cracks the audience up.
The high bit was Austin and Rob in the beginning. They do live looping with voices at the shows so they show how it all plays out. We know what you’re talking about. No worries.
This is my favorite Home Free song for that exact reason. Chance's voice in the bridge never ceases to amaze me and they embody the essence of the song perfectly.
The "na na na na na na" repetition is actually Rob on a loop. They have shown it live. You really need to find it live...soooo good!!! The high note is Austin, and he does it beautifully. I am so glad you enjoyed this song as much as I did.
Considering the original is a very British song, it's amazing how well it works as country... They did a wonderful job of selling it, both Tim and Chance are both such good story tellers.
As someone who is face blind, I understand completely. I have went to meet my best friend for lunch, I have walked right past him. And I see him every day! 😶
Ed Sheeran need not be offended with this version of Home Free, because this is so beautifully covered. Every member of Home Free with their important part in this song which sounds great. Especially Chance where the shivers just ran through my body. Rob killed the chorus! So amazing and beautiful.
You absolutely must see the BTS here (From the Vault 23, I think). You will get an image of Chance and Austin that you cannot erase from your brain, not to mention what happens to Adam. The repeated ding-a-ling is easily achieved with a looper. Producer Darren Rust does not sit there making Austin sing the whole lot! How to kill a tenor, Part 1. You're right about the fireworks - a very odd part of the video. Reminds me of when I lived in Greece - at Easter two villages on opposite sides of a valley had the tradition of firing large homemade fireworks at each other. Very spectacular, but every year someone got killed and others maimed for life, crops burned, cattle stampeding, you name it. The authorities banned it, whereupon the villagers demanded their fun back. Weird. Surprised you didn't say more about Chance - to me he's the storyteller of the band, and he brings out some great highs too. His "inward" quality really gives you someone looking back. I heard him singing live last night (!) and it's amazing how much stronger his voice sounds live than when recorded. More weirdness.
This song is very nostalgic for me. It reminds me of younger times with tailgating parties, line dancing, a boombox blasting from a pickup truck, and good old boys lighting up fireworks from a picnic table and nearly setting the house on fire. (The fireworks were illegal, but it was out in the country. All the neighbors watched the show), As the song states many of those people have moved on (including me) or died.
The behind the scenes for this is pretty funny. I do know that when they did this in concert it was the song they used to demonstrate the use of a looper, so I assume they did something similar in the studio for the high-pitched background from Austin and Rob.
The term for throwing toilet paper on trees is called rolling. It's usually a Halloween prank. Some people wake up to discover their whole house and yard buried in toilet paper to the point it takes forever to get rid of it.
There needs to be a stronger word than perfect when it comes to this song and its arrangement. Please add "I Can't Outrun You" to the poll. You'll get a treat with Chance leading the song. And the video was his brainchild, he directed it.
They used a looper to produce the repeating sound in the background. You can find some videos recorded at their concerts and see they demonstrate how to do that.
It's called a looper 😉. They used it for most repetitive parts (Adam, Chance, Austin, Rob). You can see it in any of their live performances of the song, or the bts if you're a patron. I love the song and what they did with it!
Yeah, they did. I just watched it, and the looper thing is not there. I'm not a patron anymore, but I can swear I saw the looper clip somewhere other than a live video. Oh, well, blame it on old age!
This is such a great song! I had not heard the original before Home Free did their version. Love that Chance takes the lead in it & like all the other guys parts too. This is a nostalgic song about memories from the past with some good & some not so good. But everything that happens to us shapes our life & the person we become.
I don't know if you've ever watched Home Free's series "From the Vault". It's the behind the scenes filming of their videos (this is one of them). Watching that series I think the people actually doing the filming must feel like they're herding stray cats - really talented ones, but stray cats nonetheless.
DJ your analysis is the leads in this one is spot on except I think Chance should have had the lead the whole way......but's pretty musch a perfect cover other than that
Rob was actually singing 2nd tenor harmony with Austin’s high notes you spoke about. I would imagine they may have used a looper during recording, but not sure. They do use the looper for this one live since there are so many parts. I love this song and their cover is outstanding!
We (in the south) grew up having bottle rocket and roman candle wars.... catching people's hair and shirts on fire, building forts to fight from, lol. A few light burns but mostly just ruined t-shirts.
Expecting it to be H&F (if you aren't good at faces) is not as much of a stretch as it might be, because I'm pretty sure this was filmed in OR. I think the airport is the one they filmed Understand at, and you might recognize some of the "wide open spaces" and the railroad tracks from other videos for HF, H&F, Peter Hollens, Chris Rupp, and Tim.
Home Free live Castle On The Hill Fayetteville, NC 10-10-21 is the video in which they demonstrate the looping. Their live version is excellent as well. I think you will like this video also : Old Dominion - Snapback (Home Free Cover)
From what I can tell, the arpeggio parts in the verses are being done by both Austin AND Rob; Austin's doing the high notes, and Rob's doing a harmony just underneath that. And I think it was most likely 'looped,' i.e. they'll have sung it 'live' into a looping machine for a full cycle at the beginning of the song, and then played it back on a continuous loop in the background while they layered other harmonies on top (that's something that can be done on a live performance as well, without it going outside the definition of being a 'live acapella performance.')
I am loving this so much. This song is really impressive in Home Free's style. I like the Ed Sheeran version but this seems to elevate it with this blend of pretty voices... 😍 I think Chance's voice, with that slight grit at the end, is absolutely beautiful and then Austin and Rob singing those higher notes is absolutely lush... Thank you for this reaction DJ, so fun and such a great introduction to this song for me. I appreciate your energy and enthusiasm always. Oh, and I love Editor DJ for when things aren't quite right. Editor DJ is a total vibe! #DJAntlers #HerdLove
Rapidly approaching 60, and I'm quite happy not throwing up from alcohol abuse any more thank you! 😂 Finally got to see HF on Sunday, and they are just as you would expect. Which is, of course, amazing and fun.
I think that, if I were a professional singer with popular songs on the air or streaming, the worst day of my life would be my manager calling and saying “I just heard Home Free is covering one of your songs…”. At first, I would be honored and then….wait….what are they going to do with my song that I forgot? Or could have done better? ‘Cause they’ll find it.
I love this song. Thank you for doing it as not many reactors do. Everyone gets a shot and I love it all. I think they use a looper now where they can sing a note or phrase and it records it and they repeat it. Adam is great at using the looper and they do it live (like with Man of Constant Sorrow). Chance will do the mouth harp sound into the looper so he doesn’t have to sing it too much as it hurts his voice. Love Austin’s highs in this song. Good reaction DJ! 🥰
Love me some Home Free! You should also check out the Canadian group “Walk off the Earth”. Start with a cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” with amazing vocals and unique instrumentation! Another must see is a cover of Madonna’s “Toxic”! You’re welcome! 😜🎶
I think Home Free made this their own in that Ed's version is a young person looking forward and HF's version are older guys looking back. Both are so valid. I think it depends on the listeners age will determine which one they liked better. I love Home Free and really admire Ed Shereen and love his voice but for me, being 70 the HF version brings back so many memories of my youth that it tops Ed's version.
Great video. Such a shame fireworks are illegal in Australia. They're pretty much ingrained in us at birth here, as it would be expected because of our national anthem (The Star Spangled Banner) line "the bombs bursting in air." It's part of a way of life we far too often take for granted I suppose. As teenagers we used to have "bottle rocket & roman candle wars" LOL. They were holding/shooting roman candles at each other in the video. Not real smart but sooooo much fun.
I really like the song, and l like the guys in the field and strolling along, but I'm not fond of the antics of the couple. And, yeah, shooting roman candles at each other is a good way to cause injuries. I saw a live video of this song of this song, and Tim ad libbed to kids not to smoke or run from the law/ get drunk.
While I realize many of the songs Home Free covers, the original artists are no longer with us, but it would be soooo cool if you could capture the reaction of the original artists reaction to Home Free's cover of their hits....
When they do this live, Tim sings about smoking and drinking and says during his verse, "don't do that kids." Then he sings aboyt running from the cops and says, "Don't do that either kids." It cracks the audience up.

This song is so dang country, it is PERFECT for Home Free.
There's something about Chance's voice that when it hits right just gives me the chills!
This is my favorite Home Free song for that exact reason. Chance's voice in the bridge never ceases to amaze me and they embody the essence of the song perfectly.
I love this one better than the original 🏴
Same. I’ve been voting for it for weeks 😊
Probably my favourite Home Free song. 100x better than the original
To add …. Fireworks are everywhere in the States, especially in the south 🤪
Prosopagnasia. That's the word you're looking for that means "face blindness."
Love everything HF does!! Everything!!
The "na na na na na na" repetition is actually Rob on a loop. They have shown it live. You really need to find it live...soooo good!!! The high note is Austin, and he does it beautifully. I am so glad you enjoyed this song as much as I did.
I’ve never heard this song before, but it’s so pretty.
This was arranged by Darren Rust!
I love their version of this song! The arrangement, the harmonies, everything about it! ❤️
Considering the original is a very British song, it's amazing how well it works as country... They did a wonderful job of selling it, both Tim and Chance are both such good story tellers.
You can tell this was made before the pandemic... LOL Great stuff.
Home Free never disappoints, and neither do you lol. Love from western Pennsylvania!

I love Chance’s voice!
He’s currently my favorite.
Home Free did an upgrade on this great song!

That may be in my top five from Home Free.

Its in the Live audience cams that you can see how they use the looper. 😘
Not to sound maudlin, but what a great goodbye song to play you out of your last exit from Church.
Wouldn’t be surprised if that high pitch tone was Adam, using a looper.

I hadn’t heard the original before this either. I like Ed Sheeran well enough, but this is so much better in many ways.
In Concert, the high background is looped by Rob and Austin.
Those fire works are called Roman Candles.
I don't know what it is about this song, but the line 'these people raised me" gets the tears flowing every damn time

So many more Home Free songs!
“Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” with Peter Hollens has a similar vibe as this one.
I absolutely love that song.
Austin is so beautiful 😭
When I saw them in Melbourne they did this and used a loop station, as others have said, Rob and Austin were looped for the background vocals
#JOINTHEHERD!
The high you’re talking about is Austin; they probably looped his part
In the audience cams from this song in concert it’s Austin and Rob.

Those are Roman candles and many younger people start Roman candle wars for fun, but I don't think it would be fun.
that sound terrifying people can die or get horrendous injuries from fireworks
I suspect that a looper was used for the fast guitar/banjo sound
Yes.

I just love your reactions to these Home Free songs complete with the visual commentary.
I just love Chance's voice. It is so smooth.

Hello DJ the Bass Gang got a new cover out, Be Prepared, it’s very good,
This is 2nd song I ever heard from them, after Man of Constant Sorrow. They set the bar high & haven't failed to deliver! ❤
