@@timsilva1944 I did Race Tech springs, new fork fluid, top gun spring for the rear, and switched it to 10w shock fluid in the rear to keep up with the heavier spring. Another great investment is a high compression piston and pumper carb. 👌
@@LeviHeizer Ah, a fellow Bush Pig man. If I had to sell all my bikes except one, the DR would stay. Especially after all I've put into it. For me, suspension is always a first on any bike. The TM40 carb is a great modification. I didn't want to do anything internally that would reduce reliability or ability to bump start if I had battery or starter issues. Can you still use 87 octane? I did a 7 state loop using TAT routes last year and didn't want to chance it with suspect fuel octane in remote areas. Although I did do some head porting. I know a guy. Does head and valve work for NHRA guys, so I trust him. Happens to be my brother. 😄
@@timsilva1944 So far it seems just fine with 87! I have the 223 cam, high comp piston, full Delkevic exhaust, and an amazon hsr42 with real Mikuni internals. The cam ticks a little more. I also port matched the exhaust after everything else and it gave a surprisingly noticeable difference. Fuel mileage is around 48mpg if you stay out of the pump. You can always run the bike richer if you get bad gas. I want to add a fan when my travels take me somewhere hot.
How long are your legs. Im 5'9" with 30" inseam. Im scared to get on these adv bikes - the only bike im comfortable on is the dr650.@@SwankyCatProductions
Hoping you get the suspension done on the DR. I am really interested on yours's and Jerry's opinion on how the bike works then. Doing a great job on the videos.
Swanky, keep up the great videos. I have owned a ktm 690 and sold it to purchase a dr 650. I just found the ktm bad handling and never felt comfortable on it. The dr on the other hand feels much lighter and nimble to me. That said, suspension wise you are correct 💯 on your assessment.
Thanks man!!! Yeah, I'll bet the 2.5 ish inches that my 701 was lowered made a HUGE difference in that bike's handling. Back when I bought it I was just glad that the seat height was more manageable, but after experimenting with the XR, I've got an entirely different outlook on lowering bikes, at least these crazy tall ones. My first ride on a DR blew me away though, I couldn't believe how well it handled and stuck to gravel even when leaning it around a bit. Definitely the nicest handling stock dual sport I've ridden (on smooth-ish terrain).
I rode a DR and a 690 ...the DR rides a little lighter due to lower center of gravity...the 690 I rode vibrated the fillings out of my teeth and could induce tank slappers on dry pavement.. you could not give me a 690...
More top heavy feeling, but especially with it lowered just a tad, it felt much more nimble on the single track. A surprising amount more nimble I'd say!
Haha that sounds a lot like the first year I owned my Gen2 KLR! I got myself into all sorts of situations I probably shouldn't have been in with that bike 🤣. Then I bought my XL250R and was able to learn on a slightly less dangerous curve haha. What are you looking at buying?

Serial DR modder here. Wait until you ride a DR with a 790 kit.....
Haha I'll bet that would be interesting!
Thow emulators in the DR forks and it will blow your mind! One of my favorite mods.
Nice!!! Yeah, from what I've heard, the DR is a totally different bike with just a little suspension work and a few small power mods. I can't wait!!!
You'll want springs and a revalve on the rear shock as well. That shock just can't keep up with washboards.
Maybe an 18" rear wheel too. 😉

My local dealership just got a brand new XR650 in. That is one tall bike! I would have to carry a step stool .
Oh yeah, it's a monster! I just took all three out in the new snow tonight and the XR definitely felt like it was the most difficult to control!
They're all way lighter than my 575lb Suprr Tenere
Haha, yeah I can't imagine moving that beast around! I think I'm just a little too short for a Super-T!

Agree. My Super10 is a hefty girl, without all the luggage…🤣 Looking for a trails (not trials) bike. Most likely CRF250F.

Yeah me too, should be a lot of fun! Thank you!!!
I rode a 100 cc 2 stroke for years . 400's should be back to big bikes .
Light is right!
Always enjoy your videos brother 👊 great comparison
Thanks man!!! Glad to hear it!

Looking forward to the suspension set up video. God bless thanks for the info
I'm glad to hear that!!! Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful, God bless!!!
Thank you
Sure!
Really good question! Thanks for the info
Indeed it was! Glad you found it interesting and helpful!
Super cool thanks buddy for the great info
No problem!
@ you got me looking at a XR 650 now lol
Wonder if you would like the klr650s the shorter one better than the regular one
I've actually been thinking that same thing!
The xr is kighter and nimble.
More top heavy feeling, but especially with it lowered just a tad, it felt much more nimble on the single track. A surprising amount more nimble I'd say!
Great job 👍
Thanks!
I take my klr anywhere. Can't wait to get a more nimble bike, so I'm not peaking just because i get myself into a go for broke situation.
