The reason John was obsessed with what everyone else was making is because in his mind, he thinks he's entitled the same amount for answering the phones. John is one seriously screwed up individual.

John used to act like he was Howard himself. He's a top flight comedian, NFL level athlete, and he is always right. Favale who he was arguing with is worth more than $10m and John drinks 20+ beers everyday and does a podcast suing people with stained shirts and drooling on himself literally.
John wanted that Jackie chair sooooo bad.

Vinny is treating John like shit (deservingly so), but John keeps kissing his ass, trying to get ever closer because Vinny was higher than him in showbiz. Were Vinny a lowly intern, John would've wanted nothing to do with him.
When John says "the truth of the matter is...", what comes next is not something resembling truth.
