Iceland Volcano Eruption Update; Large Eruption Begins, Partially Explosive

- A large volcanic eruption just began on Iceland's populated Reykjanes peninsula, sending lava flows towards the town of Grindavik. As a fissure nearly 2 miles long erupted, something unusual occurred; ash emissions were created as the likely result of phreatomagmatic explosions in the southern part of the fissure. Lava is currently erupting at a rate of at least 1,100 cubic meters per second, a figure which may be an underestimate.

I was a bit surprised by the minor explosive component in today’s Reykjanes eruption. However, where the fissure propagated to in the southern section on Hagafell is an area that previous fissures since 2021 have not previously appeared in.
@GeologyHub I observed a peculiar behaviour at the south end of the eruption at the S/E corner of Hagafell where the explosive action occurred. (It could only be seen on one of the live feeds belonging to mlb. is and nowhere else that I could find ruclips.net/video/I_wRajP-7bg/видео.html ) Where the fissure opened up on the edge of Hagafell just after the first signs of ash were observed, the fissure then opened right up and the lava flowing from the north was pouring into it at an amazing rate and also drained the area around it. The more that poured in the more explosive it became. There was a massive amount of lava that poured into the crevasse. I would be curious to see if it remains open long enough for drones to fly over it tomorrow. I am guessing there was an underground cavern with water in it that the lava was pouring into.

This eruption is extremely breathtaking. Estimates of the initial effusion rate have been as high as 1,500-2,000 cubic meters per second, and the eruption's start occurring at daytime resulted in the lava fountains looking very, even extremely red.
The intermittent ash explosions are quite colorful. Their colors ranged from black, brown, yellow and even yellow ochre, with the surrounding eruption being colored white, red and blue.
The asphalt interacting with lava is quite interesting.
To anyone in the proximity, be careful!
The area where the intermittent ash explosions are occurring is vigorously venting steam.
Thanks for featuring Afar TV, as the channel is where I usually go to when seeing volcanic activity live.
Finally, on some other cameras near the hills in close proximity to the eruption, some of the lava seems to be descending down something, where the lava disappears. This is an interesting phenomenon that I would like to mention, as the lava may be entering an old lava tube, as suggested by the lovely folks on Volcano Cafe.

Town is a write off at this point. Simply can't have people living on top of such an active volcano, at this point it'd probably be just as well lava takes out the town so the residents can have closure and move on with their lives.

Such maps are available online at the Icelandic Met office.
This afternoon one of the Iceland geologists estimated that about half of the accumulated lava had erupted so far, so it's clearly not going to go on like this much longer.

These types of Riff Eruption ,are quite spectacular,,!! but still scary!! Keep safe Iceland! From Nova Scotia.
3.4 km long this time. The fissure this time opened up all along the prior fissures ripping multiple open. They key is this whole are is now weakened significantly so once pressure gets high enough .. it tears. Over and over and over. And it keeps pouring out magma over and over and over, building up more and more and more. It's only a matter of time (unless the chamber below stops filling) until the town gets encircled by flows and essentially is useless.
Those lava fountains are beautiful and unreal. Hopefully no one is harmed.

Glad there are cameras on 24/7 recording this. It’s like Iceland is being unzipped!
The Icelandic Met Office published the extrusion rate of magma and put it between 1500 and 2000 cubic metres per second.
The explosion that took place just before 4pm local time was shocking to see happen live. It looked huge at the time, but ultimately it really wasn't that big at all. There are cam feeds (I believe it was an mbl feed) that was zoomed in on this and it showed a fissure forming at the base of a hill, then as the fissure started to die out some, one of the fissures went dry and a crack formed and then started smoking brown smoke, and as the fissure's bubbling subsided even more it started belching brown smoke even more before the gas could finally vent a little more freely and the outgassing really grew much more violent.
Yeah not a great omen is it really when it just keeps coming back stronger. It’s rare but in the past people have been caught out by Fissure eruptions getting to when they became explosive.

This eruption seems like it almost right on top of the previous one. It's also amazing how much real estate the lava has covered in such a short time. I'm always astounded.

The fissure went through and split the previous vent in half i think
The area experienced a lot of rainfall during the past few days and the water tables must’ve been up.
It’s very bizarre how the explosive activity started, it began at that southernmost end and slowly moved up. The fissures it emerged from I thought had closed but this upwelling began and then it became more and more violent.
For a while I was genuinely concerned about how it would’ve impacted air traffic if it worsened but thankfully it ceased.
It was truly incredible to watch, I just happened to be on watching the camera closest to it when it started.

Grindavik is doomed.. sorry to say. But if the volcano keeps erupting with this much regularity it's only a matter of time before the lava walls fail.
Sadly, I have to agree with you. Grinvik may cease to exist before too long. I mean, there's only so much those lava barriers can hold back before they fail
The Blue Lagoon Resort and the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant are also doomed

It's a new volcanic era in this area. And La Fournaise on La Reunion has been quiet since last year. Each volcano has its own "personality". I love them!

He used to do longer educational videos on geology and gems and crystals, years ago.
His style of content requires a lot of editing, graphs and charts. I think this form better suits him.
We appreciate both. The news updates are timely & comprehensive but the mineralogy Shorts were very interesting.
Someone down below has their eye on Grindavik. Also, a 3km exclusion zone would mean that the towns lava barriers would have to be abandoned (judging from your map). No more shoring up weak spots.
Hoping those workers that are working on the walls stay free from harm. On the one hand, the eruption is beautiful, but on the other hand, it's somewhat terrifying that something so beautiful is potentially so deadly at the same time.

Grindavik has had 2 volcanic eruption this year. just that is insane on it's own
There have been four eruptions from this area with only erupting close to Grindavik. The fissure for this eruption is in the same place as four out of the eruptions with only one just of Grindavik erupting close to the town the Feb 8 eruption.

Saw some brown and orange "debris" being ejected in force from a crack around hagafell. That just regular ash, or something else? Definitely different from previous eruptions here
I think a good bit of it is just the 'dirt' above the water table getting thrown out by the steam explosions.

Love your videos- I’d feel like a great approximation comparison for the size of some of these flows could be like a little human silhouette in the corner of the videos? One of the most mind blowing things about these eruptions is just how mammoth they are and it never really can be conveyed on a screen for people

I went to bed last night JUST before the earthquake swarm started. I had this nagging feeling something was gonna happen soon and I'd noticed a minor increase in the quakes and the location of them. As well as small increases on the tremor graph.
I woke up and was like DAMN!!! But it was probably a good thing because I would have been up all night and I have work today haha

@@laurel1191 I would say your sister and you will be fine. This was an expected event and although large at the start, has calmed down substantially.
As for any sort of intuition, my feeling is calm and has no worry so for what its worth.

Thankfully it is through a Fisure rather than a cone, so a fisure means leass pressure, (more pressure released over a longer area) Where as a cone would be explosive and reult in air traffic problems
Every one of the Reykanes Peninsula eruptions in the last four years began as a fissure eruption and quickly consolidated to fewer and fewer vents until there was just one cone erupting. This is likely to do the same as the volume of accumulated magma will erupt for at least a few days.
Wow they will need to start building overpasses to span over these sections of lava flow paths.
I saw some footage that seems to show that this eruption has recently spit out a phreatic cloud
Waiting weeks checking up the earthquake monitoring, today I did not do it... because I am on holiday. Again I missed the beginning of it. What a pity...
Its the volcano that just keeps giving. It erupts, stops erupting, takes a month to build up some pressure and fill the magma chamber, usually in one of the faults, and then starts all over again. I wonder how long this cycle is gonna continue. Grindavik has been lucky so far, but would it be possible that one of the eruptions begins literally inside town? Or is town safe and are we expecting more eruptions where the current eruptions are happening? In any way, eruptions can probably happen all around town (literally) or inside it. Thanks for the update.
At the height of the eruption, the crack opened all the way to the wall and a small vent formed just outside the wall.
Maybe witnessing the new most active volcano on the planet I bet with Kilauea activity less eruptive since 2018
This Eruption is almost as mind-blowing as EVH's in 1978....but actually nowhere near as influential. 😜
In all seriousness I love that the Icelandic people are so used to volcanic lava flows that they are always building and improving lava levies. Awesome!!

It is fascinating to see a geologic process like this occurring in real time. I'm curious, under what circumstances or at what scale does basaltic lava flows that consistently erupt begin to be viewed as a flood basalt vs "only" intermittent (but sustained over years) volcanic eruptions?

This eruption will not last. This rift events has a larger cubic feet per minute flow rate than one single spatter cone
But their was a large boom as the initial flow started. There hasn’t been one of those with these fissures yet so why today do you think?

Probably not ocean water, elevation is too high. Likely is groundwater

There are 3 people refusing to evacuate Grindavik. They have not forced them yet.
They shouldn't force them either but refuse them help and not put rescue people in danger later.
Plenty of good reasons to be able to maybe chose where you want too end things.
