Feren is British and we like to be different to everyone else. This distro works and runs well and the dev is young and does it on his own.

I used Feren OS as my jumping off point to get into Linux. I talked to one of the developers via Twitter and felt that they selected the various slices of Linux from other distros (KDE, Gnome, Mint etc) that they felt eased the transition from Windows. I like Feren. I've been exploring other Linux (mostly Ubuntu and Debian based distros) and can readily reflect back on the Feren experience to offer a baseline for comparison.

A couple corrections. First what I call Gnome software is apparently the Mint Software store, but I'm almost 100% sure that it's an old version of Gnome software (If not they look identical). Second, apparently, that first "transfer files to Windows" screen is meant to get people to back up their files, not transfer them immediately (the wording there could be a little clearer for sure).

The Idea is to install with a live USB, but a lot of the space on most USB's will remain unused, or indeed have a second one handy to download pics, docs, and save files on. Then once Feren is up and running, it has you import them to Feren. It's a nice touch.

My guess is that Feren is a simulation of what if Gnome 3 went different design way... it looks like budgie, it is also a parrot, it uses nemo, gnome-software etc..., delicate blur, centered clock. It is as if someone was angry at Gnome and tried to do better gnome with KDE...

The split install systems are basically for OEMs, so they can install the base system and when the user boots for the first time, the user and other related setup can be done. Don't know why they need reboot though. Fedora does this seamlessly.

From what I read on DistroWatch and seen on a couple of other videos, Feren was based on Linux Mint originally with Cinnamon. That is why you see LM's Store, File Manager, and other items from LM. I would assume they kept those programs to maintain consistency after they switched to Plasma as their desktop environment.

I got one strong reason, why it is an awesome idea to split the installer options in such way.
Whenever you have an error, fuckup, bug, your computer sneezes during the installation process for whatever goddamn undiscovered issue.
    THINK.
I had this problem many times with some distros (arch based)
I would die, if I would have to repeat inputing all this boring data again and again when something fucked up.
Splitting the installer is a smart move. very smart if you want to repair, correct, improve and troubleshoot.

Well, the split part of the installer meant that, theoretically, someone else (an OEM or a friend) can install Feren OS and then the user can finish the setup on their own. I think it's neat actually. I dunno, maybe because I just haven't tested THAT many distro, I just don't feel it's weird. A quirk to be sure, but not as weird as you felt like it is. A shame that there wasn't a longer look on how it included a TON of themes and desktop layouts tho - I think it's the only KDE distro that has themes with desktop layout switcher OOTB?

    • @TheLinuxCast

I understand the Feren team doesn't want to have A new user to Linux be over overwhelmed with a bunch of software and setting in your face. One thing I will say is Feren OS is clean. For a new user I would pick Manjaro Deepin or Pop! OS ( Can't wait to see how Rust on POP! I run Feren as my daily driver with a Ryzen 5 machine, and it works great. A lot of the choices were for higher end systems, so if you are trying to turn your $100 Wal-Mart Celeron Laptop into a bleeding edge gaming machine, this is not the distro for you. It's resource intensive, but it rewards those with 8 GB Ram or more with a very nice experience. So far the only thing "Broken" was the Feren Store when I tried to use it to install steam. It hung up twice, and I installed it from the ever trusty and crusty Synaptic Package Manager and never looked back.
Feren feels like it's familiar enough to be easy to learn, as it took parts from several sources and feels like a marriage of KDE and XFCE to me. VLC works great for watching media, Libre Office is a solid choice for docs, and I disliked Vivaldi and it's side bar fairly intensely. Fortuneately as the video stated, changing browsers was painless. And yes, I laughed at the Video's mention that "Nobody" uses Falkon as I'm writing this on that browser. Falkon works, even if it's GUI needs a lot of polish before it looks as good as netscape navigator did before it became Firefox.

So much hype over obscure unstable linux distros, it is amazing how much BS there is out there when reviewing most linux distros (not yours in this case) Feren is indeed very pretty and seems A1, only one problem; the updates don't work! and I do mean what I say; they do not work! The classic release is already obsolete and I have been trying to update to the regular Feren and ended up in a very chaotic and unstable results and could not update at all and the system crashed. Feren is in my opinion unreliable. let's face it, only Linux mint is stable in the long run.
