  • This is wild camping gone wrong!
    I went for a wild camp on Beacon Hill and talked about Gentleman Jack along the way.
    I take a walk around Shibden Hall and surrounding Estate and talk about some of the colourful characters including Anne Lister aka Gentleman Jack of olden day Halifax Plus an attempted wild camp at Beacon Hill overlooking the town of Halifax.
    This wild camp was definitely Wild Camping Gone Wrong!
    Let me know if you've ever had a wild camp go wrong in the comments. I'd love to hear your stories.

    I was wild camping in Rendlesham forest Suffolk back in the 80's and was just settling down for the night when a strange humming sound that sounded a bit like Hip Hop ( but played on a faulty subwoofer ) seemed to emanate from the earth all around me.The sound whirred and clattered with changing intensity and appeared to modulate in pitch and timbre and lasted for what felt like an eternity.I have developed a coping strategy for dealing with stressful events - i usually clean my teeth - a mundane activity can distract the troubled mind and offer comfort and solace.It was only when i reached in to my rucksack that i discovered the source of the sound - i had inadvertently packed my electric toothbrush in an empty biscuit tin and it had mysteriously switched itself on and was buzzing around - it's movement being assisted by the remnants of damp toothpaste on the bristle head.
    Just got to walk Mr Twiglet the Jack Russell so instant gratification might be elusive ? Read following for background info ( short for information )
    www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-54649675
    As it grew darker i had a sense of dread and foreboding that things were not as they should be and i stuck my head out of the tent and a soliloquy from Hamlet came to mind.....
    ’Tis now the very witching time of night
    When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out
    Contagion to this world. Now could I drink hot blood
    And do such bitter business as the day
    Would quake to look on.
    But i was out of hot blood so made do with some Horlicks.
    During the endlessly long night which eventually did end i awoke to an alarming site - my whole body was covered with what looked like ink stamp number 8's which i believe happened when they used a tractor beam - like the ones in Star Trek - beamed me up to their craft and for some reason ink stamped me ? Anyway,believe it or not this have left me feeling completely ALIENATED !

      How far a hike is that?

    • @twiglet2214
      @twiglet2214 Год назад

      @@udrinkit A very good question Rich T - that takes the biscuit and drives many people crackers for an answer.In terms of how far is it to hike ? Would that be for yourself,myself or the Aliens ? Also in terms of distance we need to factor in how long the legs are - stride length etc AND payload being a contributor in perception of distance.For example i'm quite short - naked,in summer and carrying a medium size fridge freezer would be different to mid winter wearing an Everest grade down suit,map,compass,marmalade sandwich and a plentiful supply of Kendal Mint Cake.
      I can't speak for the Aliens although most of them appear to speak English with an American accent and are either cute and with googly eyes,smallish ears and are affable - or have an unhealthy obsession with destroying mankind and have green goo emanating from all of their orifices.
      PS oh crumbs, hope it's not too claustrophobic living in a biscuit barrel
      Hope that's helpful.

      What did say or ask to piss you off? Just asked how long a hike meaning walk was it to the campsite. Smh. What's offensive about that question?

      @Doves It was the site of a USAF airbase called Bentwaters and the UFO sighting made the national news back in the 80's but for paranormal activity you want Borley Rectory which is near Sudbury, Suffolk and was described as the most haunted house in England en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borley_Rectory
      Yes confusion can be confusing sometimes Doves but at the time i was composing my latest rap piece about the paranormal - it's called Toast.......If you feel daunted cos your house is haunted make friends with your ghost and make it some toast - spread it with jam or Grizzly Gaz Spam - set your spirit free - wash it right down with 't nice cuppa tea .......if you chant that as an incantation for a few hours with a metal galvanized bucket on your head - lined with custard - the effect can be quite striking ( plastic buckets don't resonate at the same frequency ) so clearly my perception of Hip Hop had been compromised.Some have tried it and gone completely mad but the custard acts as a moderator to keep the mind in touch with the mundane ( and you can pause and lick it off if you get peckish ) and facilitates thoughts about bananas,for example - banana and custard - which doesn't get a look in when it comes to paranormal events.Sorry for the confusion.Thanks for seeking clarification.

    • @twiglet2214
      @twiglet2214 Год назад

      @Doves Well Blancmange,although equally effective,is much more difficult to make Doves.Stick with custard - you can't go wrong !

It kinda makes one really look for the unexpected. Here in South Africa we have our haunted forests. One is in Dhlinza forest where the Mpushini falls and Bishops seat can make one's arm hairs rise. Actually this country has many haunted towns. It's strange how we're attracted to these places isn't it. But...I waffle! Have awesome adventures and 🍻 cheers and many more. Fab Video, and the shots of Beacon Hill torch on fire were particularly stunning, never seen it alight before. All the history was interesting too, John Mitchell of Scout Hall and his flying machine that went wrong and the chap Jonathan Walsh with his litigation mania and seemingly whipping people he disliked (clergy in particular) while on his mule? what the!! Bones end up on display and then they get kicked in by the drunk locals? hahaha
    Seems Anne Lister hit some bad luck then with a tick bite leading to an early end to her life.
    First time I came on Beacon Hill and saw Halifax below, it felt like being on Top of The World, everything looked so tiny below, like a toy town. Great stuff as we say.

      @@GrizzlyGaz Ok cheers Gaz, i'll send you an email soon. Thanks for the kind words. I've just found your video with Scout Hall and the drone shot of it which was fab.
      I still remember the first time I came across Scout Hall by sheer chance just wandering about in Shibden Valley coming down it Southwards and it just appeared on the right (derelict at the time). I was well intrigued by it. I almost felt like some great explorer making a discovery! hahaha (though very well known to all the local historians whom I eventually discovered on a google search). Always something extra special finding/visiting a ruin or landscape for the first time. You know you'll be back again later.
      The ruin known as Upper Shibden Hall (featured on your scout hall camp video from a distance) is perhaps also being renovated as I noted some footings dug out for potential pipe works on that last visit a few years ago.
      On a recent walk through Shibden Valley with a friend I noticed the derelict Yorkshire water board house with an outbuilding close by has since had a new house built over it, complete with Cows herding at the front and new long concrete road/path leading to it. I'll miss the various ruins as they get rebuilt/renovated.
      Scout Hall still looks great though. Cheers.

    • @GrizzlyGaz
      @GrizzlyGaz  2 года назад +1

      Yes that old Yorkshire water building in the Shibden valley (the one with the old stone carvings at the gate with Halifax co operation water board writings on it) has had a huge mansion built on it plus there's another derelict building close by that looks to be having some work done. They put a new road in there to accommodate it. The upper Shibden hall hasn't been touched since I was last there (around 2yrs ago) and those trenches that have been dug out around it have been like that for years also. Maybe it will have something done to it in the future???

    So beautiful and truly amazing places and fascinating stories of old. Gaz, thank you for sharing your awesome journey with us all. I applaud you as well as appreciate your time and dedication. I have always camped both solo and with family since I was young. I became a serious hiker and rock climbing became my passion. I had already gone to many places, states and National parks to do it all, camping , hiking and climbing. However, it has all just about come to an absolute abrupt end for me as I am now fighting cancer. My passion now taken, my hopes are gone, and my body now weakened by High Dose Internal -131 Radiation treatment. It has kicked my butt to put it nicely. I am crushed far beyond words can ever say. I suppose I can still camp since it is a way of resting, restoring and relaxing my mind and body. So you and Fendy keep Climbing Up for me, your thankful friend from America. Gaz….Live Fully And Embrace Every Single Day, for nothing is ever wasted. Be well, be safe and may our Lord Bless all of your days! M

    hey Gaz, the camping and exploring started off great'' its just bloody typical of the alarm going off! its just unfortunate camping near industrial sites you neve know what's going to happen.
    nothings worse than having to pack away in the middle of the night. sorry this happened to you buddy. i bet this mistake is the last😵‍💫
    yes i agree camping is all about getting away from humans lol and industrial buildings.
    bless you both. be safe out there gaz.
