    Former Mech Infantry (Bradley) Platoon Leader here. This stuff was drudgery sometimes back when I was in my 20s training at Fort Hood and Fort Benning. All I could think about was ‘when is training over?’ and ‘when can I have a beer’? Now that I’m a full grown man, I’m now obsessing over phase lines, sectors of fire, avenues of approach and all that stuff! I wish I was as into this stuff then as much as I am now! You guys could be military officers! Interesting videos and comments!

    Just got into Steel Beasts and these series of videos have been an amazing source of information as sadly the sims tutorials don't cover battle plans or orders.
    Very nice of you to give up your time to document and share this stuff thank you!

    Appreciate the time you took to create the tutorials. These combined with observing your Sunday night streams have helped to give me a better understanding of the tactical side to Steelbeasts. Lots of useful tips.

    Great content. I for one would love to see more single player content. Maybe planning and execution with a slightly larger force and stiffer opposition. Really enjoyed this!
    Perhaps you could go a little slower when clicking through the menus so we can see the selections a little better.

    Steel Beasts PE reminds me of Falcon BMS....I'm no pilot or tanker irl, but I love those types of sims. I may just spend the cash next week to get it.
    I'm an Air Force brat though so it's nice to see something like Falcon for the tanker side of the US Army, and Marines.

    I found this to be a really helpful video. The description of how to go about planning and executing the mission was great. I've been on and off with SB for some time and this has inspired me to give it another try. I knew what key to press to do this and that but never really understood how to make use of the tools to plan and execute the mission. It appears that you are using a mouse? I was under the impression that without a joystick you're at a disadvantage? Thanks for your time and I hope you keep the series going. Cheers!

    • @Mirzayev
      @Mirzayev  4 года назад +2

      Glad you enjoyed the video!
      As far as mouse vs joystick, I have spent about 1/3rd of my life playing Steel Beasts (9 years as of this year!), and I prefer using the mouse. Most joysticks are designed for flight sims, and while they *do* work fine in Steel Beasts, they don't offer any real advantage in game over using the mouse. It all comes down to personal preference and using what you are most comfortable with.

    • @RealandSimulatedWarsBlog
      @RealandSimulatedWarsBlog 4 года назад +1

      Depends of what joystick you are using. I would never trade the precision and response I get from my Warthog joystick for any mouse on the earth. A good joystick offers a very distinctive advantage over any mouse.

    • @Mirzayev
      @Mirzayev  4 года назад +1

      @@RealandSimulatedWarsBlog Again, I refer to my previous comment regarding personal preference. If you prefer the joystick, stick with it. My point is that not having a joystick doesn't put you at a disadvantage.

    Would you recommend this sim to someone who needs a brake from DCS once in a while and wants to get their hands dirty on the ground? In DCS I only fly full fidelity modules as I love learning how all the systems and sub-systems work. Complexity keeps sims alive for me. I've played (and loved) the Combat Mission games in the passed, as well as Command Modern Operations. I had no idea about this sim "Steel Beasts" until a few days ago. But it feels like it could be Combat Mission but kicked up a notch?

    • @Mirzayev
      @Mirzayev  2 года назад +1

      I'd definitely recommend Steel Beasts to anyone who wants to experience armored combat portrayed in an authentic manner. There is a bit of a learning curve, but if you are doing full fidelity DCS modules you will likely find it to be much easier.
      I've never really compared it to Combat Missions as they are very different games, IMO. Combat Missions, to me, excels at portraying company-sized elements fighting in urban terrain.
      You can check out the TankSim Discord if you've got more questions (link in the description). We run missions weekly on Wednesdays at 6 PM CST if you want to observe.

    Thank you sir for these videos! Just getting into SB and this has flattened what otherwise would have been a steep learning curve. Question (potentially dumb, and I'm sorry if I missed this explanation lol)-> why deploy mortars when arty strikes are available? Thanks again!

    • @Mirzayev
      @Mirzayev  2 года назад +1

      Mortars have a much quicker "flash-to-bang" compared to artillery. In Steel Beasts, Mortars can be targeted and fired in half the time that it would take an artillery mission. Three cases that seem to consistently work well for me are:
      1. Destruction/suppression of enemy infantry in squad size or less (GREAT for killing FO and ATGM teams quickly)
      2. Forcing enemy vehicles to move from a position of advantage (IE, a prepared fighting position) so they can be more readily targeted by another asset.
      3. Using your mortars to quickly deploy obscuration to deny the enemy from having effective observation and fields of fire.
      Obviously not an all-encompassing list.

    • @peterollendorf9065
      @peterollendorf9065 2 года назад

      Never mind sir... the reasoning is clearly explained. I forgot to switch my brain on while watching the video.

      @@Mirzayev Excellent clarification thanks! I have deviated from your recommended start up guidance, and will probably have a longer ramp up time because of it, but, I can't get into 'instant action'. I moved right to this modified scenario set to low difficulty to get my bearings in the game. All tutorials completed and continue to work at the range though my gunnery rating is 95 through a single session where God intervened on my behalf 😅

    Do you use a joystick for this sim?

  • @eddz2858
    @eddz2858 4 года назад +1

    When you say the enemy PC had displaced and carried on with the mission. My concern was has it carried on towards the mortars and supply truck.

    • @Mirzayev
      @Mirzayev  4 года назад +2

      Fortunately the original scenario didn't have mortars in it, so there wasn't any programming to have them advance forward to the east of PL AXE. This was also the strangest playthough of this mission that I have ever had; things didn't work like normal, for whatever reason.

      @@Mirzayev LOL....Lucky we know its a scenario. Good intel.

  • @william3117

    What determines if your fire mission is executed by mortars or by field artillery? I noticed you called in some fire missions before your mortars got into their forward position (I could be wrong).
    Can you plan fire missions before the mission itself? You made the reference points in your plan, but assigned fire missions to them after you started the mission itself.
    Can you order individual tanks in your platoon to perform specific actions on the fly like halting, without ordering the whole platoon to do so? Can you do this as the PL or do you have to switch to the TC of that tank?
    Thanks

    • @Mirzayev
      @Mirzayev  Месяц назад +1

      1. You select the type of ammunition for the fire mission (HE, ICM, Smoke, HE Mortars, Smoke Mortars, HE Rocket, etc). Mortar ammo is delivered by mortars, rocket ammo is delivered by MRLS (if you have it), etc. You can call in airstrikes in this way as well if the scenario designer has them allocated. This sounds much cooler than it actually is.
      2. Unfortunately, you cannot have fire missions prepped in game prior to the mission. You can work out all of the request data prior to, but as soon as the game starts you have to send it to the guns. Often, your first minute or so of gametime will be occupied by doing this for "at my command" fire missions.
      3. You can, but you have to right click on the unit icon and detach them. This will break them down into sections, and you'll then have to detach at the section level. If you are fighting at the platoon level, this is manageable. At the company level, I'd recommend keeping them at section level at the lowest echelon. From that point, you can just give them commands by right clicking on the unit icon on the map like normal.

      You are thinking of the original Steel Beasts in 2000. Steel Beasts Pro PE is a different piece of software that is continuously updated.
