- WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition will offer three difficulty levels, which we hope will make the game fun and engaging for a wide range of players. Today we look at how we’re crafting the hardest difficulty level. Most of this work has been done by our summer intern George, who is a college student (majoring in computer science), competitive Counterstrike player, and coincidentally, my son. So he’s how he tackled it:

When I first started designing the Accurate difficulty, I had two primary goals. The first was to create a difficulty that increased the challenge of the game, without turning hunts into lengthy, boring slugging matches where player skill is secondary to simple time spent on the hunt. The second was to try and replicate the success rates of real wolves in the wild.
The core changes that make Accurate different from other difficulties reside in the multipliers Player Damage Dealt and Player Damage Taken. As a reference point, for the Challenging difficulty, the default difficulty of the game, these numbers are both set at 1. On Accurate, Player Damage Dealt is set to 1.5, meaning the player deals one and a half times as much damage to prey, and Player Damage Taken is set to 2.7, meaning the player takes more than two and a half times as much damage from prey on Accurate than on Challenging.
Those are some big changes, and they make Accurate feel like a very different game. Hunts tend to be shorter but require more caution and active thought. Even the most skilled players won’t succeed on every hunt. Knowing when to give up the chase is crucial, otherwise your wolf might not survive the harsh wilderness of Yellowstone.
Accurate is not for the faint of heart and is by no means necessary to enjoy WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition to the fullest. The game is designed to be engaging and well-rounded on Challenging, which offers a test of skill without being overly punishing, and there will also be an Easy difficulty, for those who want a more relaxed experience. But for the bravest souls, Accurate offers our most realistic, most difficult representation of the life of a wild wolf.

We are releasing the first episode, Amethyst Mountain for PC/Mac on Steam and itch.io, as Early Access on July 25. That will be followed by multiplayer and Slough Creek some months later, then followed by the mobile versions. We’ll then resume development of the next episode, Tower Fall.
WolfQuest 3 will be a free update to players who own WolfQuest 2.7.

It's really sweet that your son helps you with the development process of the game. And, overall, is following your path of computer development through Computer Science and video games. Honestly, it's really sweet.
This game has given me so much. The epic, nostalgic feeling of summer break starting, coming home and playing this game. I can’t wait.

This is very smart. Instead of making everyone a super powerful wolf that can one hit ko no miss kill an elk is just, silly. In nature, an elk is just as deadly to a wolf as the wolf is to that elk. They can kick and gore and have killed or seriously injured wolves. So not making everyone just super powerful but instead very threatening, but also vulnerable to each other is more balanced and like nature.

Heck, that was a close call! Good job to George for getting it down in the end! Seems like he's really been giving you some great feedback on the difficulty tuning, and it'll definitely be an interesting challenge to play on the accurate difficulty. Seems like it's gonna be pretty tough!

Me in WolfQuest 2.7: Egh. Bring It On mode is too E A S Y. Real wolves would not be able to hunt an elk herd to extinction all by themselves and kill a wolf by surviving at 3 HP.

I feel the same level of happiness as when my crush looks at me for 3 seconds. That's a lot and I am just so excited. I am literally having a 'fangirl' moment (idk if that's just used for anime type people or not, hence the quote things) and I cant move without having to calm myself down🤣. I love this game so much and it hasn't even come out yet. This is literally THE BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!!! Thank you guys so much!!! ❤💕
I love how realistic and amazing the animation is, especially how the elk calf goes down. (Poor calf) but that is some serious animation skills. 😍

Realistic, Realism, Hardcore, Nightmare, I want my mommy, Holly trombones and a pogo stick, Set Fire and cut losses.
This is amazing! I love how great this game is going to be and how much better your making it! I am beyond exited for July 25th. The developer team really has outdone themselves, Its Magnificent! The graphics are so lovely. The New and improved difficulties will be cool! I'll Defiantly work my way up to 'Accurate' I pictured being able to do that by playing the wolves' life through all of the difficulties until your suited to play the hardest. AHH There's

I think this is my absolutely favorite video that really shows the realistic expirience of hunting, which is indeed one of most crucial expiriences in the game. I absolutely can’t wait to play this and I will definitely be using accurate!

I’m so happy with the levels of realism! I’m going to die so often, but I’m a sucker for playing as accurate to life as I can in a game, i.e. Realistic mode in Saurian.
The most exciting thing for me about WQ 3 is the new hunting mechanic, stats and the new mate personalitiessss
If George has been playing for several hours a day, and even he almost DIES when completing a hunt, where exactly does that leave me, the rare specimen of zero hand-eye coordination wolf??

This is way awesome! I love the way you guys have set up the difficulty levels, I play Skyrim a lot and I refuse to go up to Legendary because the difficulty solution is making everything weaker, the player stronger, and nothing else, whereas this feels like it’ll be refreshing and a genuine challenge instead of turning targets into damage sponges. Great work as always team, I’m very excited for the early access!

At first I only played easy on 2.7 and I thought it was way too easy but I was scared of dying and losing xp. Now I play only accurate on 3.0 and it’s awesome! I love the thrill of the hunt and the skills you learn. I hope you don’t lose xp when you die this time, but if you do, I’m still going to play on accurate because of how fun it is. :3:3
