  • The history of WolfQuest...
Ten years ago today, we first released WolfQuest into the world. I daresay nobody in their wildest dreams, whether on the WolfQuest team or eagerly downloading (or trying to download) it, could have imagined that the game would still be going strong today. And yet, here we are. To commemorate this minor but remarkable event, we’ve made a documentary video about the history of the game. Actually, the documentary turned into a bigger project than expected (hmm, sense a pattern here?) so we’re going to release it in three chapters. Here’s the first one, “Genesis," covering the origin of the game and the initial release in 2007. Enjoy!
Chapter 2 is now live! • Wildest Dreams: Chapter 2

I’m honestly glad you didn’t listen to either the sensitive “Oh the kiddos will be serial killers if the wolves don’t just frolic around happily the whole game” or the (let’s be honest) DeviantArt community and just stuck to your priorities of making it as realistic as possible, I have had high respect for you guys to essentially not make this game another Feral heart and make it something different.

I'm sitting in my mom's university computer lab, looking up good animal games. I come across a website saying the top animal games, and WolfQuest caught my attention. I looked it up, watched videos, and went onto their website. This was when WQ was in 2.5. I come home with my mom and I show my mom WolfQuest, excitedly, and we ended up buying it. I was so happy. I went by the username ravenpaw46, with a black Wolf named Raven. And I played and played for hours. I loved it.
Then 2.7 came out. I was ecstatic. I bought it, went by the user cocobean46, and it's still installed on my computer.
That's how I discovered this incredible game, and I still love it to this day.
I can't wait for WQ 3! There's so much dedication and effort put into it.
Thank you for making this awesome game!

I never vilified animals hunting for survival. Because I had grown up with Wild Kratts on PBSkids. Which was a show that taught people about animals. Very well in fact. And whenever they centered an episode on a predator they always showed them hunting and said “yeah, that’s just how they live”. So it baffled me to know that some people don’t like how animals hunt to survive. Even though it’s entirely necessary. Not just for their survival but for the ecosystem’s as well.

Wolf quest was the first ever computer/PC game I ever played. I've played it ever since 2014, when I was 9.
I loved this game so much, I would want to play it for hours nonstop.
Of course, as the game developed, I began to want to play it whenever I got the chance. I would love taking my wolves on adventures, making up stories in my head as I played, doing single character RP (I know, I'm very lonely XD) giving them all unique backstories, and personality.
Now in 2014, the game didn't have as many features as the WolfQuest now, but I still loved it.
When WQ 2.7 (I think) came out, I was hyped up to play once again, since it was a long time since I last did. Sadly, it didn't work on the computer it was previously on, so we moved it to the new one. I played for 2 hours straight.
In 2014, a few months after I got Wolfquest, I heard of FeralHeart, which was similar to WQ. those were the only two games I had, so I played them both frequently. Eventually as the years went on I came across more animal games and now in 2018, I have 7 animal multiplayer games. Wolfquest became very distant from me, I didn't play it as much anymore. I had only played it a few times out of each month.
But, when I saw the videos for WQ 3, listened to some of the soundtracks, and watched my old videos, my love for this wonderful game began to grow once again. And now I play it a little bit more than before.
Thank you to the creators of Wolfquest and to everyone who helped make this absolutely BEUTIFUL and realistic game that I have loved for years. I swear, Wolfquest will never leave my heart.

    I remember getting into these games back in 2010 (Pretty sure) where I would of been around twelve years old... At the time, I know I wouldn't have been very understanding. (Purple fur and jewelry, oh my gosh i'm laughing. x'D) But with age, I have to admit Wolf Quest had taught me quite a lot about wolves. With High School teaching me the pains of coding and how to respect video game developers. I'm now a young adult who even still plays Wolf Quest from time to time, and though i'm not a moderator, admin, whatever, I still like to help guide our new, younger members of the community. I may not be some old wolf soul lingering around but I do know I've been around for some time and I'm thankful for that you guys. ;3; You even made a come back when I thought Wolf Quest was dying not long after weather and resting was introduced. I remember seeing the game on Steam and almost screaming "IT'S ALIVE!!!" in pure shock and excitement, realizing a core part of my childhood lives. I always wanted to work with animals, and sense video games has always been a large combo of mine... I gotta say Wolf Quest struck it rich. ;3; I also really appreciate that you all have experts from actual scientists, zoo keeps and other such people to actually work on Wolf Quest. You're not just some people going "Oh here's a wolf model, make them eat everything that moves, the ultimate wolf simulator where you run around and that's perfectly fine!" No, you made it so you're worried about bears and hungry little coyotes... The birds screech of warning IS a warning to act fast and pay attention. You don't get bored hunting but you have to work for it, etc. I'm glad you're continuing to build on this game and teach people about wolves, because every day this game exists, it leaves me in excitement for "What's next". ;3;
Thank you to the entire team for this project, i'm glad you got the idea. (I even remember that little video about the kid saying they could smell elk! x'D) If you didn't, i'm not so sure I would know so much about wolves to this day, or even got an interest to learn more about them through other means. I may have only joined once Slough Creek had existed, but I like to think I still joined to see the game continue to grow massively. ;3; (No more black, tar water glitches.~ Instead we have Floppy whom the community knows and loves. < 3)

I remember finding the WQ website in 2008 when I was nine years old. I was so hooked and have been hooked since I first installed such a buggy, minimalistic, wildly entertaining and inspiring game on my dad's poor DELL laptop that could hardly handle RUclips videos.
I am currently eighteen years old and my love for wolves and WolfQuest has only grown since my childhood. It makes me so, SO happy to know WolfQuest still has life within it and probably will for many years to come.

I found this video enthralling and can't wait for the rest! I first began playing WolfQuest when I was 12 in 2010 (Nukilik_Ulva). I had actually just begun gaining interest in online games and WolfQuest was the first one I came across. I made a few long-term friends on WQ and we played for a year or so. When the lexicon chat became more and more limiting, we moved on to other games. However, to this day we play WQ. I actually met my girlfriend, who I've been dating for five years now, on WQ back in 2010. She moved from Vermont to Texas so we could develop our lives together. Friends I made eight years ago I still keep in touch with, and care deeply about. WolfQuest, as silly as it may sound, has significantly shaped my life. Thank you guys, for everything you have done.

I first heard of this game around 2010 or 2012, when I was only 10/12 years old back then.
The nostalgia hit me hard when I finally stumbled upon Wolf Quest again, years later.
What to say that isn't already said? WQ is a beautiful game; there's not much words to use for it, because every time I come back, log on to either Single Player or Multiplayer mode, it just stuns me to the point I'm speechless. It's been part of my childhood for longer than I realised and I'd poured a lot of time playing it, be it by myself or with my friends. It's developing really well since it first started, and it deserves more recognition and popularity. I pity those who yet to play this game, or even know about it; Wolf Quest is a true, hidden gem.

I love how this game always stays realistic. It’s not like other wolf sims. It’s real. It feels real. There are people who think wolves are demonic killers, and people who romanticize and sexualize them to the point where they become, well... something they’re not.

I have watched big cat diary since I was little and I have seen animals kill and eat each other so I came to terms with how animals work from a young age. So when I played the game I had a great time and thought that it was awesome and the elk carcasses didn't bother me at all. Besides this, I just want to say how awesome it is that you guys worked so hard to make this game. 👏 You all have done an amazing job! I'm very, very happy that you have made this amazing game. My favorite thing about this game is that it is very realistic. I have played almost EVERY wolf simulator game on my AppStore. I have been looking for a game like this forever!

Great video, I'm very excited to see what's in store for future updates to this game. I can still remember playing WolfQuest on my old PC back in 2013. It's hard to believe it's been over four years since then. Once WolfQuest 3 is out, heck, you won't be able to deny that it's the best animal simulation on Steam. WolfQuest is, without a doubt, one of the very few good wildlife simulation games that have even been made, and considering that development started in 2005, it was way ahead of it's time at that point.

Canaaaaaaaa~ ♥ Still miss her presence, haha. Now that I've finished watching, I can attempt to express my thoughts though this might take a few edits seeing as it's so late here...
This was a most interesting glimpse into the project's foundations. Dang... and I thought the traffic that Slough Creek generated back in the day was bad. Yikes!
It's amazing to see how far WolfQuest has come as well as being harder still to believe it has been around for ten years, yet it is still going strong. For that I confess I am grateful. When the discontinuation was announced in late 2012 the realization that it was over was pretty overwhelming to me, yet there was also a hint of acceptance in that nothing lasts forever. To see it bounce back the way it did when Eduweb returned in 2014 was an unexpected surprise. Fast forward to the release of 2.7, I felt the familiar excitement that I had experienced the first time I ever played WQ. ^^ Even now I am eager to rediscover Amethyst Mountain and Slough Creek in their "remastered" forms when the Anniversary Edition launches just as much as I am to purchase Tower Fall when it lands to finally resume the survival of each pack I have played in 2.7.
To everyone in the current development team: you've done fantastically up to this point from the day Dave returned to take up the project's reins once again, and I can only hope that you continue to carry WolfQuest as far as it can possibly go. Take it as far as you possibly can while also reaching newer and greater heights together to make WolfQuest and indeed any future titles you might make the best they can possibly be. Like many others, WolfQuest is the reason I admire and respect wolves and other canids as well as their prey, and a deeper respect for nature which most likely would never have happened at all without it. Truly amazing what impact a game can have.
    //nostalgic rambling over
Also that shockwave WolfQuest prototype(?)... _wow._ Glad you guys went with Unity/that Unity expanded in the way that it did to have been worthwhile/that you're still using Unity to continue developing this game. (Seriously, kudos!) It's been quite a nice trip down nostalgia road merging onto memory lane just watching this... it was a really nice touch adding game footage from past versions.
Certainly looking forward to seeing the next part(s?)! 🐺
P.S. Forgive me for pointing this out: Croix is misspelled as "Croi".
P.P.S: Forgive me for my tired ramblings, I am feeling extremely nostalgic. :')

This game absolutely shaped me into the person I am today and had a MASSIVE impact on both me and my two younger sisters. We joined the forums in 2010 and made so so SO many friends and acquaintances through off topic channels, RP packs, the writing channels, and more. I firmly believe that Wolf Quest played a major role in my decision to become an artist and my sister's decision to pursue writing. And as much as my parents grimaced at the carcasses in Wolf Quest, I really think it helped me develop a realistic relationship with animal death and the inherent nature of predator animals. I very recently got back into Wolf Quest and I am absolutely blown away by all the work that has gone into both 2.7 and the anniversary edition. I'm SO excited to see what the future brings for Wolf Quest, and I'll be cheering for the dev team from the sidelines!

Let me just say that this game has gone SO FAR! I just can't believe it. I believe I got the Survival of the Pack version (I really sort of forget, my memory is kind of fuzzy), and I LOVED IT! I couldn't stop playing it. I would think about it during school and rush home to my second life. I didn't make friends easily and this was a sort of escape for me.
I didn't find this on my own. If my friend hadn't shown me this game I would have never found it. While I was at this friend's house, she showed me the website, saying that it looked amazing, but her mother wouldn't let her download it because she thought it was a scam (she clicked the green download button, which was an ad for on the download page, and they got confused and downloaded a bug). I, looking at the website, reading the info, was shocked. This was amazing. Much better than the math games my mom had gotten for free on the iPad.
I begged my mom to get it, and she did one day. I played the heck out of it. I died a few times. The only thing I was worried about what the bloody carcass, which I would quickly turn away from when one of my parents walked into the computer room. I was so terrified that they would think it was too violent and forbid me from playing it. But one day my dad walked into the room while I was fully emerged in the game, and saw the carcass I was devouring. I looked up at him, shocked and worried. He only smiled and said "Cool! Blood." My dad loves the wild and nature.
To tell the truth, I have searched for simulator games, (other wolf games, dragon, cat, bird, you name it). None have the realism and time put into them to be a true simulator game. It was either the game was glitch, the graphics just didn't cut it, or the game play was just boring and unsatisfying.
If WQ had died, I don't know what I would still be searching for the perfect animal simulation game to satisfy my fierce desire to become an animal (sense shapeshifting just isn't possible).
Thank you, Wolf Quest team, for making it though those hard and stressful times, and for playing that fish game. :)

I played the game when I was a kid. After awhile my computer crashed and I lost it. It was at the point where although I enjoyed it, I didn't think much else would come of it. You found your mate, started a family, and found the end point. That was the game last time I had it. Out of curiosity, after a few years, I one day checked the website again. And what do you know, "Wolfquest 2.7 out now." I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the game was not only still going strong, but evolving into something much more than what it was. Good on all of you guys for putting so much effort and time to make this game what it is. My thanks to the WolfQuest team for all the work and passion you all put in. Sorry for the long post, but I appreciate all the years of commitment you've all done. Again, many thanks to you all.

i first got into this game in 2012.. so that feels like.. a lifetime hontestly. i was 10 around then, and well its changed my life. alot. growing up, i had a spiritual connection to a wolf, and wolfquest has opened that up every since. i even have a faux fur wolf tail, made to look almost exact as one of the wolf tail pelt designs in the game. and considering my connection was that of a wolf, i of course had my own wolf name which is Dawn, and my own personality, and ya know.. its just the wolf life i never had. considering i felt and still feel like i was born in the wrong body, that being of a human.
so in a way, this game was alot different to me. it taught me to protect and prepare for the worst, its helped in alot of my life today as with relationships and protecting those i love. even if i do tend to act more wolf like than most would... that aside, this game was my absolute childhood. and tho the therian community may not be such a big fan of this game, im proud to call myself both that and a wolf quest player. i currently have 2.7 and im super hyped for both 3.0 and tower fall. not to mention that this is the one game that i can play where the game is realistic, and the players are realistic. i owe you guys a lot. the best part of this game, is you arent afraid to say no. this one time, while in a roblox game, it used to be realistic. you could play as a horse and it was alot of fun. but as it got noticed, there were demands for magical things and the game creators then completely changed. now the game is filled with pegasi, unicorns, and the map building has just gotten alot worst to us realistic players. thats one thing i admire about wolfquest, even if the requests may get the game alot more attention, you still shoot for that realism even if your game isnt as popular as it could be. the people who stick by even without these demand changes, are your true fans. and im here through you all the way. as long as thing game stays as realistic as it has been, im here for as long as i can be. (even tho this comment will probably never be read)

I was born Jan 11th, 9 days after the release of this game. I remember growing up with it and it was the first game I ever really got into. I remember drifting in and out of the community here and there along the way, but I always came back for the game. Now I’m introducing it to more people that I play video games with regularly, and some of them really enjoy it! I nearly lost my shit when I saw WQ3s first trailer. One person in particular that I’ve introduced after the WQ3 release has really taken to the game and we play around with the pups a lot, creating little wolf families. It’s a fun, chill game that can go from 0 to 100 really fast. No, it’s not the most beautiful ever, there are a lot of bugs and features I’d love to see in the game (maybe a DLC puphood chapter? Invading other packs to kill their pups? Maybe??) but it’s still gorgeous and it’s amazing to see just how far this game that I’ve loved literally my entire life has come.

I remember finding your little teaser video that you made by accident on youtube and just.. My jaw dropped. I was so excited by the idea and when I found out it was free I flipped some serious shit. I was quick to download it on a very old very not game suited computer. It was so hard to play because the frame rate was soooo bad because of my comp. And I remember seeing that eventually there would be pups. And I just was so excited. But I didnt get to play it. Not until last year when I rediscovered the game and downloaded it from Steam. And then I found out about the development of WQ 3 and that was it. I now stalk your youtube every single day waiting for that weekly update and re watching old videos. You guys are great and even though im older now I still love the game. This new polish is going to make it even more of what I have always wanted in a simulation animal game.

As soon as I played WQ during the 2.7 era, it took me some time to get used to the game, I was really frustrated with how the wolf courtship worked, so I had to get tutorials online, not only that I had absolutely no knowledge of wolves, but as I got better with the game, holy crud, this game changed my viewpoint on wolves more than I could imagine… it changed my life man, and I owe it to these competent developers that persevered through the gauntlet of educational wolf ecology computer game development! Or as they call it… WOLFQUEST!
As of now I am enjoying the latest version of WolfQuest, the Anniversary Edition to celebrate this amazing game series, and I hope it lives on forever to educate our species on this important keystone species and how without them, the planet surely could take a darker turn.
