Measuring less than a millimeter wide, these micro-machines are programmable lifeforms that researchers from the University of Vermont and Tufts University believe could one day help clean microplastics from our oceans or even repair organs inside our bodies.
But what exactly is a “living” robot?! And should we expect to see them whizzing through our bloodstreams any time soon?
By pairing stem cells harvested from the embryos of the African Clawed frog with a sophisticated computer algorithm, researchers generated a blueprint design that allowed the team to build the brand new form of life known as xenobots.
If scaled up, xenobots could be used for regenerative medicine like repairing organs or growing body parts for transplant from the ground up. They could be created using a patient’s own cells, then inserted into their bloodstream and programmed to clear the plaque from clogged arteries or to detect cancer.
And the xenobot’s applications aren’t just limited to the medical field. The team also envisions assigning individual tasks to a swarm of xenobots so they can collect microplastics from the ocean or search for and collect radioactive contaminants.
But what are the ethical implications of creating a totally new form of life?
Find out more about how these “living” xenobots came to be and what their existence could mean for the future of humanity in this Elements.

"ethical" let's make some people who don't know shit abiut this to regulate and profit from the work of the scientists
They usually do know much better than corporations with stockholders and management that don't know or care about the results?
But the latter has a large enough PR budget to make people say shit like this
Buddy, scientists have been working with businessmen to make profit for decades. Honorable science is pretty rare nowadays.
@Lee The big difference between scientists and engineers is that scientists invent the things and methods that engineers apply to everyday life.
@@Jaccobtw Most scientists work for Universities and public institutions, and they usually become able to develop research independently only around 40 yo, so they basically live with minimal incomes for most of their careers. Even after that they still have to secure funding or else they are unable to do research and, most importantly, bring bread on the table. The only positive is that you are not easily replaceable, do it's at least a very secure job. Only a handful go into the private sector and get big profits.
I know because I'm getting a master's degree in astrophysics and I've worked closely with postdocs and senior scientists, so I've see what's like. The successful ones, economically, are usually those who go into teaching, because on top of their research they get salary from the University, and they get their name on a larger number of papers (done by their PhD students). Problem is that teacher positions are quite limited.
So no, most scientists are scientists because they like what they do (that's why I'm becoming one anyway), there definitely are much better jobs for much less effort if your objective is to make money. In a way it's a shame that the scientific community works like it does because it looks very frustrating to someone who just wants to produce knowledge, I had to take a long time thinking if I really wanted to be a researcher because of it. But I guess it's the compromise we have to make until we have this economic system.
Lee Oof, big blow to engineers
This is got to be one of the coolest things to come out since 2020 began. Truly we are living in an age of Revolution now. This science is absolutely incredible. So long as we can control how many we will ever need but also make sure they don’t spread out of control and become a threat to life on Earth then we should be alright. I truly look forward to the day that these little guys can be put into practical use. Please keep us updated when you can.
The key thing is so long as they can be controlled and are abuse or develop negative behaviour basically if.

@I Z E K O L the closest anything could get to immortality in any form would probably lean toward, if not outright be a non-biological entity. However existing as long as possible as flesh and bone for obvious reasons is very appealing to us. Don Pedro Hernadez The homonculus videos are not real.
Yup. They are worrying about the wrong thing.
Its not the ethic. Its the possibility of xenobots turning into grey goo scenario.
Less concerned about the ethics. More concerned about malfunctions in an organism impossible to collect, spread across the planet. This has the potential to be the worst invasive species ever.
@@jontobin5942 prove it by scientific evidences/data and research and stop predicting..
First you need to understand what they mean by saying ethics, we are talking about us being us and not change us into something that is not us any more.
That is an amazing feat. Is it possible that this happened by itself on accident millions of years ago? Occam’s Razor is a very applicable here. Design is inevitable.
Maybe billions of years ago
I do wonder if this will ever be properly utilised in the medical field?
Will they ever be able to feed and divide?
