    Very cool video, interesting that they use sand on the bottoms. I thought it was concrete at first. Did you create those berms in Villavicencio? Brazil is probably zone 13, which is the tropics. Much of Georgia is a zone 8.

      The Barefooted Gardener We did not create berms like that in Villavicencio, we did direct some of the surrounding slopes away from the features but it wasn’t consistent or as much of an issue for our style of installation.
      The Hardiness zones for this area of Brazil is 10, São Paulo is the Southern part of Brazil and quite a distance from the Equator.

Now that I looked at a map, it’s clear I was definitely wrong about Brazil’s zone. I based it off Puerto Rico which is definitely closer to the equator.

    Hello professor can you tell us more about that sand.... I never say such type of design in aquascape Inc ponds. Also, how it can help in filtration and it is good or bad to put sand on the bottom?

    • @edbeaulieu5916
      @edbeaulieu5916 4 года назад +1

      aqua gardening They use a very specific Quartzite sand, he said it took a long time to find the right supplier. The challenge of sand is that it may become anaerobic due to a lack of circulation. In my observations of their ponds I noticed that they had a series of small pipes bubbling water up through the sand on the bottom, the addition of Ozone is very important because as Ozone breaks down it creates Oxygen which keeps the sand aerobic.
      They have a very good system!

    the reason why koi guys prefer smooth sided deep ponds
    is because they dont want the fish to scrape off a scale against the rocks.
    koi also get most of their exercise by swimming up and down so if you want them to have nice strong bodies you will need at least 1.5 meters in depth.

    • @edbeaulieu5916
      @edbeaulieu5916 4 года назад +1

      icewolf250 On many of their projects they use UV and Ozone together.
      UV is an effective sterilizing system but it only kills the bacteria and plankton within the UV Sleeve, it doesn’t do anything for organisms or algae growing along the bottom of the pond or the rock substrate.
      Ozone also has a reaction chamber but there will be a residual amount that enters the pond giving you a greater zone of control.

    Why does their water quality is higher than the ponds showcased by aquascape? I mean, there are barely any suspended particles in the water column in these ponds, is it perhaps that they use sand instead of gravel as you guys use ?
    My theory is that sand compacts and makes a barrier vs. gravel which has water pockets where particles can be deposited and once sturred up they float back to the water column.
    Please Professor, Im curious and need your help!

    • @johncrossin3718
      @johncrossin3718 4 года назад +1

    • @johncrossin3718
      @johncrossin3718 4 года назад +1

      Ed Beaulieu correct me if I’m wrong but I feel ozone is actually bad for a natural water feature in high amounts because its basically a powerful oxidizing agent. Isn’t ozone bad for the biofilm on the rocks that helps with the ecology of the pond? In my AP bio class, we had this big discussion about the harmful affects of atmospheric particles interacting with aquatic life. (I’m pretty interested in that stuff) Also, would you install an ozone generator in your pond? And would you create an Aquascape brand ozone generator to install for your ponds?

      juglore The benefits for Ozone is the incredible water clarity. Ozone will oxidize and destroy tannins, plankton and other organic compounds which increases the water clarity.

    • @spirnay79
      @spirnay79 4 года назад +1

      Ed Beaulieu, not only clarity. Ozone reacts with almost everything. It also helps you keeping parasites (the free swimming ones) under control. It helps keeping a lower bacteria pressure (we do want the good ones (filter) but do not want the bad ones (sick fish). And it oxidizes the amino acids (yellow color), giving you a crystal clear pond (blue tone water). If used correctly it is a very useful tool in fish (koi) keeping.

    Wait.... as proclaimed pond professor you had no idea o3 is being used on ponds???
    I more and more get the idea you have no idea how the 'KOI POND" management has evolved the last 15 years.
    At least over here in Europe.
    I believe you have great ideas about koi keeping but there is also a lot you can learn.
    Maybe it's a good idea to get some updates on how koi ponds are designed nowadays.
    I would love to see a combination between the modern koi keeping and the natural koi keeping you guys do.
    I think getting better educated in what is possible nowadays with filtering, and combine this with the more natural filtering you do, you can get a really good water quality (clarity has nothing to do with quality) and ecstatics.
    A few things which would be awesome to combine is slate bottom (church) including bottom drains.
    RTF (Rotating drum filter). Moving bed filters, bog filters. Trickle-, shower filters, waterfalls, etc.
    Powerfull UV (up to 20 watt per 1000 gallons) for bacteria, parasite reduction, (gets larger koi).
    and so on.
    As you might know koi (carp) is not a space fetishist but a water fetishist.
    You give him the best quality water.
    Which is stable with no to very low NH3/NH4, NO2, high temperature (70F), constant removal of the pheromones (water change or ozone) which will keep it from growing.
    Do this and the koi will give you the best it has in color and skin quality and of course in length.
    It is not advised to use ozone directly in the pond. exactly for the reasons you mention in the video.
    Ozone oxides very easy (adds 1 oxygen atom to a molecule) and therefor can burn the gills, skin of your koi.
    Normally you have a reactor in which you let the ozone react with your pond water.
    Also a rest ozone filter (activated carbon) is advised to get rid of the unused ozone.
    Ozone is also dangerous for the human lungs, if you can smell it, it is dangerous.
    The needed depth in a koi pond has nothing to with the health of the fish. a carp doesn't care about depth of a pond or stream. the care about water temperature!
    This is the only reason why it is advised in the colder regions like Chicago or the Netherlands to have at least 4 feet.
    This goes 2 ways in the winter the water in your pond will freeze over. having at least 4 feet will somewhat ensure your water on the bottom the pond will have at least 4C (39F) this is the critical temperature a carp needs to survive. longer periods below this temperature and you koi is very likely to die!
    In the summer the depth prevents that the water will heat up to high temperatures which will cause a drop in resolved oxygen. Another and maybe the most urgent reason for the depth is the quick change in water temperature (hot or could). Quick changes in temperature is something which carp can not handle very well they can even die from this.
    The reason a shallow pond works closer to the equator (with (sub) tropical temperatures is that the temperature doesn't change that quickly. most of the time it is around the same temperature and if the changes it will do this slower than in our regions.
    Also the risk that the pond freezes over is almost zero around the equator. If due to climate change the shallow ponds in these areas would freeze over, you will find frozen koi in your pond!
    Another reason you don't want a lot of rain water gathering in your pond is because of the lack of KH in rain water.
    If a lot of rainwater is getting in to your pond and the pond water is washed out (containing the salt forming KH) you have a greater risk in having a PH crash. This can also kill your fish and other life in your pond.
    Even if you have limestone in your pond the pond water can be pushed out so fast by the rainwater that you can have a PH crash before you limestone will desolve in the water adding KH to your water which will in its turn will rise the PH again.
