Wimbledon 96 - Cliff entertains Centre Court

- When rain stopped play and the covers went on Centre Court during Wimbledon 96, Cliff Richard put on an impromptu concert to entertain the crowds. He was joined by a backing group including Martina Navratilova and Virginia Wade! (3.7.96)

The amazing thing about this is how at the beginning the audience are distinctly uninterested and yet by the time he’d finished they were begging for more - that’s a true performer! Hats off to Cliff!

early 1980s the lead singer from the scottish band Nazareth sang 5 songs by himself at my dads cricket club in Melbourne ,what a legend

Seemed the audience weren't too impressed to begin with, they don't know a living legend when they see one, until the bug began to affect them and they paricipated. How many can say they were at Wimbledon and see Cliff in concert too. He sure made a memorable occasion. Takes some courage to sing like that, a real performer and one of the best to come out of the UK.

I watched this live. But it never ceases to amaze me how capable and amazing cliff is at singing live, yet almost everything you online is him miming. Such a talented man yet mimes at every opportunity.
I will always remember this Wimbledon tournament. there was a terrible lighting thunderstorm up in the Outer Hebrides. Our Home got struck by lightning.

I was 12 watching live on tv...didnt know him them neither follwed the words as English was not my mother tongue. My uncle and elder brother told me about the iconic singer. But i remembered how wonderstruck i was by his voice and energy...later as i grew up i started listening to him and he's such an inspiration. Love you Cliff
I remember watching the tennis when it rained and Cliff Richard sang to entertain the crowd.. He was my pop idol in the 60's, so I thoroughly enjoyed his kind gesture here.. What a man!
Remember this well, but hadn't seen it since then. Forgot how good he sang for this rain delay. That's some incredible quality for impromptu live singing without any instrumentals! Better than a lot of proper concerts lol

Cliff Richard is a well known tennis fan. That day he could have sat there like the hundreds of others waiting for the rain to finish but what he did just goes to show the difference between an entertainer and a TRUE entertainer because he knew the hundreds of people will not only be getting wet but bored out of their minds as well so what do he do? what a TRUE entertainer does, he entertained the crowd so they wouldn't be bored wet and miserable waiting for the rain to stop and he did it all of his own doing, he wasn't paid to do it. How many of todays top entertainers would have done the same thing?

Apparently he was asked quietly by management, so he said in his interview with Sue Barker afterwards lol. But I know what you mean, he still had to agree to do it and actually get out there and do it! Not easy when the mood was sombre because of the rotten weather that day.
