Hot Air Balloon Ride in Tuscany (What To Expect!) | Italy Road Trip Ep. 8

- Italy Vlog episode 8: In this episode of the vlog we get super high - in a hot air balloon (and we also explore Volterra). We were excited when we got the confirmation that our flight would take place, as these things get cancelled pretty often due to bad weather conditions. The meeting point was in a field 30 minutes away from our agriturismo in San Gimignano. We had to be there at 6am - and we really didn’t want to be late for this one. Our time planning was pretty solid, as we arrived pretty much on the dot and as we got out of the car our balloon was already in the final stages of preparation.
So a few minutes after we had arrived, we could already climb into the balloon’s basket with our Balloonist and 3 other people. We got a short introduction and safety briefing with instructions on what to do when we’d be landing and then we were off. A hot air balloon is the perfect way to explore a landscape from a Human Drone perspective. Up in the air it’s quiet and serene and the views are amazing. Hot air balloons however can also be very loud and very warm, which is the case when the burners get going. We didn’t really expect this (although we could have guessed this), but it gave the whole experience a more adventurous vibe, so we enjoyed it.
After flying for quite some time it was time to land and our Balloonist pulled off a pretty spectacular landing in the middle of a field of olive trees. As soon as we had landed the balloon was already being deflated again and prepared for transport. And for us it was time for a very idyllic breakfast that was being quickly set up by the rest of the hot air balloon team. It was a very nice ending to a fantastic experience.
In the second part of the video we then drive to Volterra, a town 30 minutes from San Gimignano. We ate some pasta, drank some coffee, looked at the old Roman theatre and explored the beautiful alleyways and architecture. Volterra also has some great views, as it’s situated on top of a hill. For dinner we grabbed some sandwiches from a popular Deli in Volterra and let the day come to an end on the terrace of our Agriturismo with some local wine.
In the previous episodes we spent some days eating and sightseeing in Rome, rented a classic Fiat 500 and drove to the Le Marche region in Italy, before heading off to Tuscany. We explored the beautiful towns of Montepulciano and Pienza, as well as famous Tuscan dishes and Pecorino. We then visited a winery in Montepulciano, before heading off the next day to our next stop in Tuscany.

In Tuscany we’re staying close to Montepulciano and San Gimignano and we also explored the towns of Siena, Pienza and Volterra. Our road trip ends in Florence, where we’ll also spend a few days sightseeing and trying out food specialities.
