  • From its earliest conception Disneyland was always just a helicopter ride away. Throughout the first two decades of its existence Disneyland had it’s very own helipad.
This is why it happened and this is why it went away.

I had just turned 6 years old when that helicopter crashed at Lueders park in Compton Calif. We lived a couple streets down from that park where my mom would take me and my siblings to go play. I remember hearing a big thump, my mom grabbed us and said come on something has happened down the street, we ran the few blocks to our neighborhood park and by the time we got there it was roped off, I saw the helicopter parts all over my park, all of a sudden my mom turns around fast and starts throwing up, I didn’t realize what I was looking at, being six years old I just thought they were mannequin parts, I didn’t know, I didn’t understand, I’ve seen a lot as a child living in Compton for my six years (another story there) shortly after that crash we moved to Anaheim California, a few blocks away from Disneyland where I worked for 3.5 years during my High School years and one year after. I remember when going thru orientation with about 20 other new employees someone in the group asked if Disneyland would ever have their own plane? The person leading the orientation, mentioned that there was a helicopter at one time and it was no longer in service. When I got home and told my parents about how orientation went at Disneyland and how at one time they had a helicopter that would take people from LAX to Disneyland that is when my mom triggered all those memories back to me and said yes “don’t you remember it crashed by our old house?” What is supposed to be the happiest place on earth, left me feeling sad for those that perished that August day. I will never ever forget what I thought were mannequins were actually people. =(

Summer Storms That accident took 4 of my family members. I was 7 at the time. Both my grandparents on my fathers side, my aunt ( my dad’s sister) and my 8 year old sister. Our family was never the same after that. It was the great divide in our lives known as “The accident”.

Woah! I never heard of this. Thanks for putting this all together. Sad ending, very sad about the lives lost. If they had perfected it now, I'm sure Heli-Uber pilots would be flying constantly to Disneyland.

    $8 in 1959 → $68.45 in 2018 still a bargain for a Helicopter To Disneyland

I had no idea that the helicopter had a cruising altitude of 140 miles (see 5:56) . Damn! A space ship!

interesting how this put an end to helicopters but accidents and deaths didn't end the use of airplanes, cars, trains or cruise ships. BTW any one have the history of what happened to the trolley?

The reason was that civilian helicopters were just outdated and too small for the purposes they were built for. Helicopters have never been able to carry anywhere near the amount of people and goods that road vehicles can, not to mention the huge capacity of airplanes, railways and ships.
What trolley do you mean? There were streetcar and interurban systems everywhere back in the early 1900s.
