I'm in the D-42MD camp here. They both sounded great. The treble on the D-28 was just a little bit bright. It lacked sweetness to my ears. I find that true with a lot of Adi tops. It can be seductive at first but as I embrace the tone qualities, Adirondack is not always my favorite. I'm not saying that's the only differentiator in this case but it's usually a significant factor. That D-42 sounds incredible. I also heard more texture in the single note runs. That shimmer paired with its projection is something special.
Being personal friends with the person from whom you got the custom shop D28, I was able to play it for a few days. That said, it's top three guitars I've ever played in my life. I refer to it as the holy grail Martin and it is something special. I'd hang onto that one if I were you. The sound just rolls out of the soundhole and it'll sling a bass note across the room! Congrats on one heck of a guitar.
Great video, thank you. Both guitars sound excellent, but the CS D-28 Authentic has a beautiful clarity that complements its richness, whereas, the D-42 MD sounds very good and full too, but a little boomy. Love them both, but I'd choose the CS D-28.
Both beautiful guitars! The D-42 MD is a stunning example of "all the cosmetic bells and whistles" and I prefer it to a D-45. Just the perfect amount of high end appointments. I think the D-28 sound difference is the Adirondack top, punchy, clear and loud. Later as they both mature the D-42 VTS top might change a bit even though it's already been baked? Thanks for the comparison!
Neither neck profile is good. The only weakness of the 28 custom authentic is thr horrible neck profile. The 000-28 version of it however has one of the best necks I've played
@@el34glo59 Yeah that neck looks too narrow in the first position and too fat in the upper register. The 000 looks perfect! Kinda strange Martin made such a odd neck, a lot of people sell them because it didn't feel good. Waste of a otherwise great guitar.

Wow. Both sound incredible. Sounds like the authentic projects just a little bit more.

Well done. You are having too much fun! :) Vote for the Authentic.

Like your playing!!!! I have a standard D18- thinking about a D42. Should I?
Which do you prefer ?! I’ve been looking at a d-28 1937… it seems the d-42 has more shimmer
I like the Modern Deluxe better it has more bass and its a bit more balanced. The 37 Authentic is much brighter in comparison.
@@RockinB23Addy. Even though its thinned, still seems brighter. I agree. They used some very stiff Addy
The 42 md wins hands downs!
Both sound incredible…however, the 1937 Authentic D28 sounds the best to my ear.
Hard to get past a D28 !!
The cs authentic is better for it's clarity, power, cutting ability, single note runs, plus has the better neck profile.

The modern deluxe neck is too small for my hands. I’d own one if the neck was thicker.
Agreed, they need a modern deluxe modified V model. Martin really limits it's sales with there skinny neck profiles.
