- Pretoria, 8 April 2015 - Afrikaans musician Steve Hofmeyr addressed supporters at the vandalised Paul Kruger statue in Church Square. In his speech he claimed illiteracy was a major contributor to black South Africans' view of SA history.
Steve should be given a heroism medal for speaking out and telling the truth. And another heroism medal for singing Die Stem. It's such a beautiful song.

this is a very sad chapter in our (all south africans) history, all heritage's and cultures should be respected. History must be preserved to insure pride in not only your own culture but also in SA as a howl. Pride in yourself and the respect of other cultures is the root to a successful rainbow nation. I think that there is only one hope... google Mmusi Maimane... My one friend is racist against blacks but not because of thier skin but because of what they did to him an his family. His mother was raped twice and has almost been killed and he needed to flee from his house in order to go and look for help his grandparents have been killed in front of him. oh wow i had no idea statues were more important than crime! it saddens me how people in south africa can fuss over statues and talk of civil wars when crime is all around us. I know this is an old comment, but since we are still facing this problem, I'm gonna adress it. Regarding what you said about the "old flags". I only see the Vierkleur flag in this video. The Vierkleur is NOT the Apartheids flag. The Apartheids flag was the orange, white and blue one. The vierkleur is the Boere/Afrikaans flag, and even though it was one of the 3 small flags in the old flag, it does NOT REPRESENT Apartheid.
