One of the greatest guitar solos ever !
People have problems loading videos on these sites, so I try to be not to critical. But it's nearly always advisable to listen to studio versions before listening to live. This wasn't a "free form" type solo here, so Seraphine & Cetera pretty much stayed in time. Credit to Terry for quick recoveries when he was out. Other long extended jams can be great fun to listen to Danny & Pete reacting to where he's gone. Great symmetry between Kath & Seraphine.

Guitar player's name is Terry Kath (RIP), one of the best, taken before his time. His energy in this performance borderlines on insane. 6:19 he kicks on the 'wah-wah' pedal. 😃
Jimi Hendrix was quoted as saying that he thought Terry Kath was better than he was.
There's a great bio of him here on RUclips, "Chicago: The Terry Kath Experience," which I highly recommend. Some of the interviews with his daughter are especially touching. But yeah, as far as I'm concerned, this is one of the best guitar solos of all time.

When groups had real musicians. Terry Kath was a beast on that guitar.
The song title is from when the singer was trying to write a song. He was up all night, and getting tired and looked at the clock, which read 25 or 26 minutes before 4AM, hence 25 or 6 to 4, meaning 25-26 minutes before 4AM. Basically about sitting up all night trying to write songs. Sorry that it’s not a more romantic or intriguing explanation. But that’s what I’ve known it to mean.

Songwriter Robert Lamm said he was alone in his room at the time while writing the song, it wasn't during a rehearsal. He looked at the hands of the clock on the wall in the rental he was living at and couldn't make out if the clock said 25 minutes or 26 minutes to 4 AM.

The only thing I heard different from that is that there was also someone else there and he asked them what time it was and the odd way he told him the time gave him the idea. No matter, though, I'd say it's a classic but that word doesn't do it justice! Phenomenal song, album, and group!!!

@@loadedorygun The band had drug problems to be sure, but those didn't occur til later in their career. This song was about being on the treadmill of writing, recording and rehearsing new material while touring at the same time. Chicago was touring 200 days a year promoting their first album, touring with Jimi Hendrix, while producing their SECOND double album. The workload was insane.
What you just heard was the late great Terry Kath. When asked during an interview once, Jimmy Hendrix said in his opinion Kath was the greatest guitarist of that time.

It makes me smile me out every time I watch someone react to this band. My parents were friends with Chicago in the early 70's and all the families would hang out and play softball in LA. I was 4-5 years old and only have vague memories of it, but this band is near and dear to my heart. :)
This was when Chicago was at its best, with the awesome Terry Kath, should listen to their version of "I'm a Man" (a Spencer Davis Group song from the 1960's)
The song comes from the writer being up all night dealing with writer's block. He looked at the clock and saw it was 25 or 26 minutes before 4 A.M. and was wondering if he should stay at it.
It feels more like he was doing to much drugs,that was the talk back than anyways

@@rhwinner Yes because Peter Cetera also confirmed it. Watch the video about Chicago you’ll be amazed. They ALL did lots of blow, that’s why Teri Kath is dead, because he was up all night and played with a gun that he didn’t check and killed himself.

"25 or 6 to 4." He was talking about the time on the clock. 25 or 6 minutes to 4:00 AM. He was in the studio trying to write a song and he had writer's block. That's what the whole song is about. Thanks for sharing. You guys are always a pleasure.
Was he actually in the studio? I think they were at that Colorado ranch coked out of their minds wondering if he should do some more.

Terry Kath - The most underrated guitar player. On January 23rd 1978, Terry was booked into a recording studio to record with a new 4 piece band. He stopped at a friends house on he way. He had a little automatic that he was playing with. He took out the clip to see that it was empty. Then, forgetting about the round in the chamber, he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. It was just before his daughters 2nd birthday. Jimi Hendrix had said that Terry was better then he was. A few years ago his daughter, wanting to find out about her father, did a film titled "The Terry Kath Experience". (It is on RUclips) She was speculating on what her father might have accomplished had he lived to be in the band he was about to start. It includes interviews and a search for the guitar that many had been searching for, for decades.

Official audio from the studio is even better....FUNFACT...This is the only guitarist Jimi Hendrix said ever made him feel intimidated....although Hendrix was untouchable.
Actually he also said it about Billy gibbons, he probably said it about a lot more people too. Hendrix was quite humble when talking about his own playing.

Always loved this song! All the instrumentation is off the chain!!! It's LIVE at that.
This band has so many great tunes, especially the older stuff. "Make me Smile" from the same show is definitely worth checking out. The guy on the trombone is James Pankow and is very animated, you can just tell he loves what he is doing.
Not the only horn band at the time, but they did it better for a while. They also were blessed by the gods of rock with three great lead singers and one of the finest guitarists ever.
A reporter once asked Jimi Hendrix, what was it like to be the greatest guitar player, and Hendrix answered: Go ask Terry Kath that question. Hendrix
had much respect for Terry Kath of Chicago.
Between Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire's horn sections they both can not be beat.

Blood Sweat and Tears has a lot better horns than Chicago.

Graduated in 1973 Northern California high school everybody bought these guys albums. Everybody I knew was in the music I miss those days

Also. Peter cetera (lead singer/bassist on this song) has been noted as having one of the most unique voices in rock. Though he doesn’t sing outside of any particular key or whatnot. But when you hear his voice you know it’s him.
Saturday in the park and smile are good songs to check out by them.

Chicago love this band from early their early days in the 70's right through the 80's .Chicago catalogue is huge but you guys should definetly check out Make me smile and Saturday in the park etc

I heard Robert Lamm do an interview on radio in the 70's. He stated that he was asleep and woke up to look at an old analog clock and thought it either said 20 minutes to 5 or 6 minutes to 4. Which if you think about it looking at a clock upside down or right side up, it makes perfect sense. I just always remember that when someone asks about the title. Doesn't matter I just love the song. 👍🔥😎🙃

Hear this oh young people of earth. This guy, and this band, on this night on that stage created as good a moment in live rock music as there has ever been. Jimi Hendrix had high regard and high praise for Terry Kath.
Oh Great!!! 25 or 6 to 4. You did the Tanglewood version. As you can see Terry was ON FIRE. he was also ON FIRE in with both the guitar AND lead vocals in "Ballet for A Girl In Buchanan" in this same concert. Since it has been cut up be sure it is 14 minutes long..

If you want to hear how much funk Chicago had, go to their debut album as The Chicago Transit Authority and play "Poem 58". Terry Kath is in beast mode on his Strat and shows why Jimi Hendrix told Chicago "your guitar player is better than me!". "Poem 58" is almost 9 minutes long and has an opening almost 5 minutes instrumental of Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums and Peter Cetera on bass that is PURE FUNK.
Saturday in the Park has excellent horns, a feel good vibe, and great musicianship. I also like Does Anybody Know What Time it is?
Terry Kath just gave us so many techniques in that one guitar solo. There was so much to unpack from that solo. So many guitar players have a style and they stick to it, he just gave a dinners course of styles in one solo. Just amazing to watch and hear.

Looking back, it isn’t hard to imagine that Jimmy Hendrix loved Terry Katy’s guitars playing. He told the drummer he felt like Terry was better than him…, that’s high level praise. Jimmy wanted to produce Terry on a solo Album….

Chicago thought about music on a higher level. There were a lot of horn bands emerging in that day but Chicago set the standard. And they had 3 lead singers and one of the best guitarists at the time.

A show to this day well worth seeing. Terry kath is gone but most of the original band still there. I know that they will be in your town this summer. Well worth seeing
Another great concert, all instruments awesome especially the guitar and horn section. They came to Philly on a Friday night but it was canceled because of birth of band members baby so the came back on Monday and thank us all. 👌 awesome. Thanks for the memories.
Tanglewood was a outdoor venue that lots of acts played. Western part of MA in the Town of Lenox.

When Jimi Hendrix was asked who the greatest guitarist was he said "Terry Kath." Of course the real answer was himself but you can see why he said Terry.
Also, you may want to check out Leonid And Friends. They are a Chicago Tribute Band made up of Ukrainians and others. They do note for note covers and are amazing. They also cover some Earth Wind and Fire songs.
This guitar player, was set to record a solo album,that was going to make him the next jimi hendrix,, but he played with guns.
The guitar player "Terry Kath" died in 1978. He was fooling around with his guns, he thought the gun was empty, but it had one in the chamber. He put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger and died instantly. :(
