"Conceived while Dostoyevsky was serving a four-year sentence of hard labour in Siberia, Crime and Punishment offers a chilling insight into the universal struggle between mind and soul. Tension and claustrophobia electrify the pages as they disclose the story of Raskolnikov, a starving student who convinces himself that logically, the murder of an odious money-lender is entirely justified. However, the forces of logic have no bearing on the workings of conscience …
Sir Stephen Tumim was an English judge and Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons from 1987 to 1995. His introduction to this Folio edition finds him discovering Crime and Punishment for the first time; in a fascinating piece, he uses his unique experience of the system to examine Raskolnikov’s punishment, and the relative mercy of Russian justice at the time. He looks too at the interweaving of British and Russian literature of the period; Dostoyevsky himself was a devotee of Dickens, while Robert Louis Stevenson was to write The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in homage to Crime and Punishment." Hello there! I want to thank Shawn Birss and Mr.Barsy for suggesting this review. I hope it was helpful! :-)
I will do my best to get Folio Society reviews of ’Queen of Spades’ and ’The Victorians’ out this weekend. I can’t promise both books, but definitely one of them!
Thank you so much for watching. I’d appreciate if you would subscribe to my channel or leave this video a like or feedback (or a dislike and constructive criticism!), but otherwise I want to wish you all a great day!
There is nothing better than the smell of a brand new book. It's very relaxing. There should be a candle made that smells of new book and paper. Thanks for the great videos.
Stunning! Thanks also for mentioning the translator and the text size. Paper video would be interesting. I find a paper that is white enough to give a crisp contrast to the ink of the text the best for reducing any eye strain. Any books that I buy these days I get with the view to reducing eye strain. It means I can read for longer :-)
Yes to the paper types video!
Beautiful book, great work!
I have scheduled the paper type video for February. :-)
I bought this book about 2 months ago (unfortunately at full price) and I had some doubts because the book doesn't look astonishing on the web site, but definitely those pictures don't do it justice. Amazing book.
Chopin
Fantastic cat (book looks nice too).
It's so beautiful!
The book is much more impressive in-hand compared to the images on the FS website! I hope I managed to capture a "feel" for the book. :-)
Well, my goosebumps are one way to tell :D
You have such an awesome collection, I just found your channel and I love your reviews! I really want to read Crime and Punishment, though I'm not sure yet which edition and translation would be best.
Anyway, keep up these great video's! Oh and naturally I subscribed :)
Thanks!
Pontus Presents Which version of the book do you prefer? And do you base this on translation or mostly on book quality?
Can't you tell folio society to reprint this beautiful edition?
That is a beautiful book. I'm so glad to see the boards are buckram. The photos made me assume it was buckram quarter bound with paper boards.
I am interested in hearing about paper types.
I think I might pick this book up before the sale ends. Thanks for the shout out :)
Your channel might inspire me to start my own. I buy very few books new. Instead, I have a weird hobby of finding books at thrift stores and garage sales, and then trading up at different used bookstores in town until I find something awesome. It's weird and effective, and might be interesting to document. And since I get old folio society books and rare printings, the reviews could be interesting in a different way.
Your cat is gorgeous.
Your channel idea sounds very interesting! Please message me if you decide to create it, I'd be more than happy to check it out. :-)
Pontus Presents I will. Thanks
Well, Pontus. I just ordered this book. And this video was a big part of why I did. Here's my sincere shout out to Folio Society suggesting that Pontus get a kick back for creating a customer with this video ;)
We've all been begging for a review of "The Warden" ever since we found out it's in your bookshelf some time ago. Can we have it?
This month is packed to the teeth with videos, but I could of course make room for it in February! And if by "we" you mean "you", and "some time ago" you mean "last week" then yes, I do recall the begging. ;-)
:)
I’m still debating on buying this 🤔 since I have a paperback edition 😪
Argh, I broke down and bought it. I feel so shamed lol oh well lol
@@NyagoNoir Did they stop selling it or something? I can't find it anywhere online
I'd like to buy this
What should I write in the search
its out of stock right now, wanted a copy myself, might get reprinted though since its such a highly regarded book.
What are the dimensions? Looks a little big
Chopin is a great choice for piano, but no doubt for Crime and Punishment you should have gone with Rachmaninoff's Concerto 2!
I agree with you, but RUclips's audio library is quite limited... especially the 'classical' section.
The edition looks great but the paper quality is rather cheap for the price they're asking. It's way too thin.
Are you selling it?
Sold it a long time ago!
Too bad, any other books you selling? Brothers Karamazov?
