- Daniel Norris signed a bonus worth just over $2 million to join the
Blue Jays organization out of high school. While life on the road
becomes normal for any pro athlete, the 21-year-old takes things to
the next level by spending his summers living in a Volkswagen camper van. VICE Sports traveled down to Blue Jays Spring Training to meet one of the sport's top pitching prospects.

Some people are happier with no friends or family and a bunch of possessions, some people have all the money in the world but aren't happy without significant people and experiences in their lives.
I could of explained myself better. Was just saying i agree with the overall theme that money doesnt buy happiness. Not to say i wasnt having fun when i was going out, but now im having just as much fun with my friends on the weekends without blowing $500+ every weekend. So for me its a win/win. I save money and i still see the same people that made my life more fulfilling. I hate that we have to say this now a days, but of course this is 100% an opinion.

For all the haters: Toronto's assistant general manager, said of Norris "He takes care of himself as well as anybody we've got. He's in great shape. He competes on the mound. If that wasn't the case, maybe we'd be more worried about some of the other stuff. But right now, the van and all that is secondary. He has great values, and they're working for him." He was also diagnosed with cancer about a year ago but is now cancer free. I think this may have given his life a lot more perspective. Keep doing your thing.

I lived out of a van for 9 months. Sometimes you feel like you live in cramped quarters. Sometimes it's lonely. Lots of times people are curious about you and how you live. At night, sometimes people want to look through your windows to see what is in the van and they can't see that you are in the van looking at them because it's dark. Sometimes you have to search for and scout out a place to take a dump. Finding a place to park your van is an art form. You can't just roll up to the beach and park for the night because it's usually illegal to park there and the cops will definitely pay you a visit, usually right after you've layed down to go to sleep. They like to abruptly rap your window with their metal flash lite. I had a 8 inch black and white tv. Sometimes I'd have a party in there with co workers. My van had a stove, oven and sink. It got broken into when I visited NY city. They broke the window and stole my portable radio that was worth maybe 4$ on the street. I was lucky enough to meet and have girlfriends as I travelled. When I ran out of money I stayed in that town to work and save to keep traveling. Sometimes I talk too much.

It's kinda self explanatory. But I will break it down a little bit : First of all he's young, he's a successful athlete, has allot of money but he's not interested in buying a big mansion, expensive cars, going to clubs and paying 500 bucks for a bottle of wine and so on. He lives in a van, he goes surfing. He's living the moment and he's not tied down to something material. Being able to afford this, for me at least, it's much more awesome than living in luxury. He could retire anytime and continue living like this.. he's life won't change a bit.

True freedom comes from shedding old habits and thoughts, humbling yourself to just your needs, and living closer to nature.

@@dr3nch_g0d52 The starting problem is easy. He needs to convert it over to a 12V electrical system and switch his generator out for an alternator. Old Buses and Bugs like that sometimes struggled to start with the original 6V system. He would have to find a place to stuff a radiator where it would actually get some air to put a LS engine in it not to mention losing space inside the van.
He's a simple guy,. Down to earth.
A good friend of mine and his brother were both lifeguards and lived out of a van. Their parents were very wealthy but they simply surfed all day and slept all night.
They're both SEALs now. Actually they've been SEALs for over 5 years now.

I know this is a few years old now, but can't help but comment. How refreshing!!! As I've gotten older, one thing that really turns me off from major sports is the conformity, from the players to the fans. It is all about keeping everyone in line, keeping the system going, keeping fans buying jerseys, buying trucks, buying cell phones. So many of the players do the same thing - huge house, trophy wife, big boat, burning money.
Why? Most careers are so short. Your best skill will probably be worthless by the time you're 30. I played DI sports on a scholarship in a non-revenue sport with a very small pro league. I always knew college was essentially the end of the line and the skill I'd honed from age 7-22...was suddenly completely worthless. Thankfully I finished my degree, then went on to a few more.
Anyway, thank you for profiling Daniel. I wish MORE people who had the money to allow them to lead original lives took that path. When you're poor, you have very few options. That is why I'm always baffled at the rich people who just follow the easiest path of American consumerism and consumption.

That's what I'm doing right now, So I'm 26 years old, and I'm homeless by choice, $14 dollars a month for storage I sleep in my QX56 infinity at Walmart and my job is down the street (2min drive) and I work for the city so I have access to a washer, dryer and shower with a kitchen that has everything but a stove and I have a gym membership $9 a month so I can stay fit and also shower there if I have to, and I use my sister's address and she lives 40 miles away but It gives me a reason to go see her along with her little family and I'm posting this cause I make good money but I want people to know that it's really not bad and yes you build character by doing this. You understand yourself more and you become more humble and grateful of everything around you. This guy is real inspiring even more cause he's a millionaire, I dont think I would be doing this if I had his money lol but the fact that he can do this with that amount of money is really inspiring and I think he's saving more than me too smh🤦♂️ I need to cancel my gym membership and start working out at Walmart lol

***** I'm not saying it's an expensive way to live, obviously it's just the opposite. But if something doesn't work out or a disaster hits, he has a lot of money to fall back on. At any time he could buy a house or rent a hotel if he gets in an accident. It's a stress-free way of living because he has that cushion. It applies more to what I said about traveling though. I'd either have to save an enormous amount or find a way to make money on the move.
