    Removing the battery just drops the output. The difference in sound you heard was the amp/modelling software responding to the drop in output. Similar to dropping in a much weaker pick-up.

    Even though the video effects are kinda dumb this really helped, I recently got a schecter hellraiser c9 and my pickups were kinda fading in and out so this helped clear up what was happening

      Keep in mind this video is like 10 years old, back in those days crazy effects were the thing. C9 is a great guitar, have one myself. I tune it to A-E-A-E-A-D-G-B-E 🤘 🔥🔥🔥 Then you can grab power chords easily on low strings and still have a standard tuned 6 string.

    I think you are reading into it a bit much. It is what it is. Many people don't know what an EMG sounds like without a power source, that's all this is, a demo, not some social commentary on guitarists. Relax. ;)

    I just commented elsewhere saying the same thing.. I hate having over complicated rigs, so id like to be able to just switch to a clean tone from my guitar.. Basically, if the lack of a battery gives just a slightly fuzzy, warmish tone, why not just install a switch that connects/disconnects the battery? Flip the switch from distortion to clean, and no more tap dancing on pedals (or needing very many if any pedals at all in the first place)

  • @BenoniStudio
    @BenoniStudio  12 лет назад +3

    I varies by how much you play. With active pickups, always remove the guitar cable from the guitar when not in use or you will continue to drain the battery. I usually change batteries every 3-6 months, whether I need to or not. Though in the past I have used the same battery for around a year. EMG has estimates on their website that explains how long a battery is estimated to last.

    I think all of us EMG owners, at some point in time, took our batteries out to see what it would sound like.
    I think i first tried it in '87.
    I would ask if this was a subject worthy of an actual video, but after 76,000 views, i guess i have my answer.
    Now i am off to find the next question burning in all guitarist minds- how do 1 week old strings sound compared to new.

    I concur. I've used EMGs in the past (the 81 and 85 models in a Heritage Les Paul-type guitar) and I thought they sounded great. They DID sound great; however, there are passive pickups that sound just as nice without having to deal with a 9V battery. On bass, I've never heard passive pickups that sound as awesome as actives. Not sure why, though.

    Some nice circuitry on EMG that with the battery adds compression and some filtering of frequencies. What your vid shows me is that emg preamp inside the pickup is not "transparent".
    And that is a good thing: they have tuned the hell out of the tone in the pickup preamp so that you get key frequencies to shine through

  • @hacker8253
    @hacker8253 7 лет назад +2

    the active pickups with bass sound good by it self but it wouldnt fix in the mix if the bass guitar and kick drum was added the thinner guitar sound is what the guitar natural frequency range is emg just add bass

    Im not a stranger to bad playing, I mess up a lot on my improvs, so sounded like me playing bad on the neck pickup without the battery lol. As far as the tone goes its not bad at all, just needs boost, either a gain or an overdrive pedal. I might end up getting an ESP with EMGs afterall, thanks for the video!

    The most common opinion is that these pickups are totally shut down when battery comes to the it's threshold measurement, but it's not. On the EMG's website in their specification documents (PDF) there is a simple truth: A pickup signal decreases gradually as a battery load, not a jump.

    The effect is more pronounced on a bass with active pups imo. I have an idea because for the last week I was wondering why my lows sounded all farty on my bass.. scared I'd blown a speaker on my new rig. The battery died completely today and There were no highs or mids coming out of my bass and barely any lows. Was like.. durp. Got a new battery.. fell back in love with my sr500.

  • @metallitech

    When you remove the battery you are disabling the EMG pre-amp, so you should replace it with some other good pre-amp, e.g. a hifi pre-amp. This is similar to what is being done here. You should get the volumes equal for comparison. EMG pickups have a very simple and poor-sounding pre-amp.

    • @BenoniStudio

      no. it's just higher output (usually) and the impedance is different. When the battery is low your output drops and isn't high enough to drive the amp.

  • @metallitech
    @metallitech 10 лет назад

    You need to make the gain the same to do the comparison correctly. I am betting that 81 sounds better without battery.

    • @metallitech
      @metallitech 10 лет назад

      ***** I mean the total gain. If that were the same then they would be equally loud, no?

    • @metallitech
      @metallitech 10 лет назад

      ***** All of that seems correct to me, but if the total gain on the signal is the same then the loudness is the same. For the EMG 81 visualization you can see that the no-battery recording has a lower level. My argument is that they should be the same for it to be a fair test.

    • @greyfoxzero
      @greyfoxzero 9 лет назад

      ***** Single coils should be noisier than humbuckers. Any additional noise perceived may have more to do with gain and volume. All else equal a single coil should output less, have more noise, but sound more chimey and less compressed. Singles tend to be more responsive to dynamics as well. Each have their place.

    • @IrLosin
      @IrLosin 8 лет назад +3

      Your pickup height might be to low. Active pickups have weak magnets compared to passive pickups . This means you can and need to put them closer to the strings than passives. Google setting pickup height. its not that hard and it does make a difference. Mine are set at 3mm from the strings when pressing down on the highest fret. According to what I have read 2.5 mm is about the max you can go.The closer the pickup the louder it sounds. So you can get more distortion with the same amp settings.

    Been watching these videos disrespecting EMG active pickups. Yeah, they use 9V alkaline batteries but a battery gives you 1,400 hours of playing time. Big deal. If you're not happy with the sound on some songs you have amp settings and you should have effects at your feet. I have two guitars with the EMG 81/85 Active setup and there's no way I'd trade them for anything else. These people are Bozos.

    • @BenoniStudio

      +onsese joo Cranking the overdrive would help a bit, but you would still be sending way less signal to the pedal and amp. Same for a modeling amp. Always have a backup battery with you. If you notice any signal loss while practicing or during sound check, pop in a new one.
